Should I give GATE again or not?

Question

I gave GATE this year and I am not satisfied with my performance. I am 25 years old and current working in industry on 4.5 LPA package. I am confused whether to appear for GATE next year again or not.

Here are few things haunting me since last couple of days.

1.  My current Package is 4.5 by the next february(GATE Exam date) it will go around 6 LPA and in next two years it will surely reach 12 LPA. I have read somewhere that average packages in IIT are 12 - 15 LPA. 
2. I am 2013 passout and I don't have 60% aggregate in B.Tech, considering that I crack the next year and then 2 years of M.Tech I will be around 28. So will these parameters like not having 60% and age going to affect me in M.Tech admissions and placememts.

Don't judge someone by 500+ char post, I belong to below middle-class family I would have posted more but I don't want sympathy, I want path which someone like you can show me. Coming back to question, My primary concern is not salary(yet it is one of the concern), I know I will learn something new & awesome, bunch of freakingly talented people, but my concern is past academic background(not having 60% aggregate) and age. I heard many of IITs have 60% criteria and during placements too they dig into previous %age and filter on the basis of age. So I am concerned because my family is dependent on me.

I did not judge you. Just reiterated what you meant in the post. Of course after my B.Tech. I also had only focus on salary. The main reason for this "ignorance". So, ideally if you join for masters at a good place many of your question becomes irrelevant.

B.Tech. % - who cares
Age - as long as you can think, it is fine

But this is only at IIT level places. Elesewhere even your look matters. Even if you look at your current salary joining IIT is way better for you and you will maximize your career earning with 99% probability.

I was like you when I wrote GATE in 2011. My sole aim ws to get a better package and there is nothing wrong with it. Fortunately, I got into IISc. Getting into IISc or IIT will change the whole perspecive of life. It willl make you realise what is important and what is not and you should never run towards packages. Not to mention that in these top institutes you will get to learn a lot of new things and study with the most bright students around the country, The atmosphere of competition here will be very healthy, not like most of the Btech colleges where every one else will try to oull you down.

So go for it. Write GATE again. Not to increase the salary but to experience something entirely different. I will suggest join a good coaching institute (weekend batches will suffice). I year is more than enough time to prepare for it.

On the matter of age, dude the time will pass no matter what you do. Why not use it to achieve something what you want? You will have your whole life to work.

How about not having 60% aggregate?. Will this cause any issue during admission?

Nope. If you can get the rank and clear the interview at IITs then it does not matter.

There are no interviews in IISc for ME or Mtech programme and Interviews in IITs depends on your rank. All the best
