You can check RFC 826 and 903 for better understanding. 0 votes 0 votes reena_kandari commented Oct 25, 2017 reply Follow Share according to RFC903, RARP is clearly a Link layer protocol. ARP was not developed in the OSI MODEL, it is often described as residing in layer 3, being encapsulated by Layer 2 protocols. It is a broad topic of discussion because ARP is neither completely a part of layer2 or layer 3. Normally, a protocol from layer N+1 is encapsulated with the header of the protocol from Layer N, but protocols like arp, stp, cdp, icmp and igmp are exceptions because are encapsulated with a header of a protocol from the same layer. https://networkengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/5064/on-which-layer-of-the-osi-model-does-the-arp-protocol-belong 1 votes 1 votes reena_kandari commented Oct 25, 2017 reply Follow Share RARP is broadcasted at link layer and I dont think it ever crosses upto network layer. plz read RFC903.there in the first line it is clearly mentioned. 0 votes 0 votes Please log in or register to add a comment.
0 votes 0 votes Two protocols operate between the Network Interface layer and the Internet layer of the TCP/IP model—ARP and RARP. These protocols are used to provide address resolution between ethernet and IP addresses.
