let efficiency of E be  x work/hr

eff of M =2xperhr

ratio of work of M/E=2x*6(d/2)  / x*12*d =1:2

lets consider the workdone by M and E in one day ...... as its given M works for 6hours and E works for 12 hours ..now the efficiency of M is 2x (lets say) and  the efficiency of E is x (lets say).. what it means that if E does a work in 2 hours M can do it in 1 hour our you can say if E does a work in 12 hours M can do it in 6 hours.. so clearly in a day both of E and M did the same amount of work or contributed equally to the work
