I've seen many questions, comparing IISc Banglore & IIT Bombay.  But to be honest I did not find it complete.

So I'm asking question here, for comparing IISc and IIT Bombay on following points =>

1. Placement opportunities

2. Research opportunities in MTech

3. Faculty interaction

4. Campus life

5. Courses + Course Load + Type of courses -Theory/Application oriented

6. Auditing Undergrad courses (Can someone audit 1-2 undergrad course per sem, how humanly it is possible?)

7. Alumni Network + Brand Value

8. Competition with BTech (Good or Bad)

9. TA Ship -> Asset or Liability

10. Location Factor -> Mumbai is better location for longer term. (At least from those in Maharasthra !)

11. Other things like

     11.1 Mess food

     11.2 Hostel Rooms

     11.3 Internet connectivity

11.4 Anything else on top of mind which you want to mention smiley

please add other points which are appropriate.

Also does by choosing IITB over IISc, what one will miss/gain in long run ?  Will there be any significant difference ?

All these points i am mentioning here are for IISC:

1) Placement : No need to worry about it , you will get the best.

2) Research : Do i need to say anything about it.

3) Faculty Interaction : Faculties are very good and helpful, When you join IISc the department provides you a Faculty advisor that helps you in choosing subjects and helping you in every sense.

Same as faculty advisor you will get Student advisor also who will be from your senior batch who will also help you.

4) Campus Life : IIT B has an edge over it, but if you know how to enjoy then there is not much difference.

IISC is not about always studying :p

5) Course Load : Load will be heavy in IISC, There are no hardcore courses you are free to choose any courses you want but the condition is you have to complete pool requirements.

6) Auditing :  Any number of courses you want

7) Alumni Network + Brand Value :Both are awesome

8) UG : Come here and try to mess with them you will come to know :p

9) TAship : Not required

10 ) Location : Bangalore is good place to be.

11) Others :

           1) Mess Food : It is ok-ok not that good not that bad.

           2) Hostel Rooms : Single rooms will be given to M.E guys and rooms are good.

          3) Internet Connectivity : No internet in rooms,if you want you can take your own connection.

P.S : Every one has there own perception about both the colleges, every time you ask this thing from a new person you will get confused.

I am a student of IITB. Can tell you about IITB.

1. Placement opportunities:  more than 200 CSE companies visit IITB for placements. I guess IITB is best for placements.

2. Research opportunities in MTech: There are ample opportunities. Depends on the person how much he is interested. It is not mandatory to publish some paper for completing your m.tech. But people do that.

3. Faculty interaction: almost all professors are very helping. Everyone is ready for help if asked.

4. Campus life : it's awesome here. Just the food in mess is mess.. :P Still, you are going to enjoy staying here in IITB. Internet in rooms makes it different than IISC. ;)

5. Courses: you should compare it yourself as courses are given on websites.
currently NLP is not offered as prof
pushpak bhattacharyya
is currently dean of IIT patna and not here for 5 years.

6. Auditing Undergrad courses: You can take 2-under graduate courses as credit and audit as many as you want.. but there are human limitations.

Guess most of you know that I did Masters from IISc and even then I don't really make any post saying people to prefer IISc. That's because I dont like making decision for others and not at all due to me thinking negative of IISc. You all are toppers and hence you all need data. Making inference out of data can be done by you. So, some facts about IISc.

1. "IISc placements are average" If you talk average this might be true. Because IISc has a lot of streams and most of them science and some of them have really poor placements. But CS (CSA, CDS, SERC) placements are just awesome. Every year around 50 students sit for placement in CS and almost any top company in India will visit the campus. So, the companies stop only when all students are selected and not other way around. And placements doesnt stop there. Companies call IISc students for direct interviews- happens with Google, Walmart and few others, if someone does good M.Tech. project he/she can get direct call for companies. - I just got a call for a job in Mathworks based on a course in IISc. Still IISc faculties dont care placements - they want IIScians to build companies and not be employees. "Don't join FB; make a FB".
2. There are some bad posts about IISc in quora and all. I won't say its fake- but it depends on the person judging. Last year Pragy told me this regarding one person posting in quora and later on the same person was saying this "of course its still better than any of the IITs". I studied in the best engineering institute in state- can rank with middle level NITs, and still if I give IISc a score of 80, it'll get only 1. That's how good IISc. is. Of course it is not MIT and one must understand it.
3. CSA dept was like a family- only 3-4 administrative staffs and all were very supportive. Basically students make up the family there.
4. I see a lot lot more courses in CSA website now as compared to my time. Guess with the inauguration of new floor and new faculties joining, IISc. has more options.
5. In my class of around 50 people who passed out in 2012, 10 people went for PhD including me. Rest went for job. 2 are already doing Post. doc. (Ph.D take 7 years?). IISc at that time didnt had international placements but from by batch 2 people are now working in US (FB and Google), one each in UK, Aus (Amazon, Google)- I don't have more info about others- may be some are making FB :). On campus around 10 people were selected by MS and that was the biggest take. During our year, the ordering of companies werent as per the offered salary as in IITs- dont know who did it, and thats the only negative I found of IISc placement- though this is just for that year.
6. Academic wise CSA dept has very good faculties in almost all CS areas. Only 1 class I found not up to standard and in all other classes not even 1 student could ask a doubt Prof. couldnt answer :P Being concentrated in just 1 subject for years and doing top notch research in that - what else can we expect?
7. If some of you are afraid of courses, I repeat what my senior said "To fail a course in IISc is tougher than to get a top grade".

I do not know much, but from my limited knowledge. I am mentioning few points. I hope these points will help you in taking good decision.

Till B.tech most of people do not have any idea about research etc. They only think about placement( package, brand etc) like any other common person. But frankly speaking  research is very high quality thing (via research you can create jobs). Research teaches you how to solve and approach any complex problem. Researchers do sacrifices to deliver some thing good back to the society before the end of this journey. Path of being a good researcher is tough but end results are awesome.

Ex. -

(1) Somebody discovered page rank algorithm and now you can see end result.

(2) Initially no money, no job, sub-standard institute but good researcher so end results are awesome.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anand_Kumar)

One more things getting placed in good company does not mean that company is going to keep you in long run. I think M.tech brand is not required for getting job in good company. Whatever you will do after 2 years you can do it now as well. I do not want to make any kind of comparison b/w IITB and IISc. Both are considered as good institute. I hope you got what i wanted to say. :)

With the required GATE rank, would the 4 year BS(Res) programme be considered equivalent to a BTech/BE degree? It is not explicitly mentioned on the IISc CSA website.
