Importnat types of network cables are as follows:

  • Patch cable (Straight through cable) connects different layers of devices.  (e.g.: switch to router) STP, UTP, coaxial cable or fiber cable can act as a patch cable.
  • Cross over cable connects same layer of devices (e.g.: two switches, computer + router). It is just like Straight-Through cables but TX and RX lines are crossed. 
  • Roll over cable (console cable) connects PC to COM port of network devices to make programming changes. It has opposite Pin assignments on each end of the cable.
