AM I CORRECT

Is there a difference between channel utilization, sender utilization, Throughput and efficiency ?

According to me , Sliding Window Protocol

Channel utilization= Sender utilization = Efficency = $\frac{Transmission Time}{RTT}$

Throughput = $\frac{Window size}{RTT}$

According to me , CSMA/CD

Channel utilization= Sender utilization = Efficency = $\frac{TransTime}{TransTime+Contention period+PropTime}$

Throughput = $\frac{Frame Size}{TransTime+Contention period+PropTime}$

Efficiency, sender utilization, channel utilization(from senders point of view) are same. Its like out of 100% bandwidth alloted to you, how much are you using?

Now, lets say efficiency is 20% and channel bandwidth=400Mbps. So, throughput is how much max bandwidth you can use considering the efficiency of channel.

THus, throughput = efficiency * channel bandwidth

                          = 20% of 400Mbps

                          = 80Mbps

AFAIK

  • Efficiency / Link or Line or Channel or Sender  Utilisation  are same
  • Throughput is nothing $\frac{1 Datapacket }{ RTT}$
