I have achieved AIR 8 in GATE CS 2024 as well as AIR 17 in GATE DA 2024 in my final year of B Tech. and all this was possible because of my parents' support as well as my friends who helped me throughout my preparation. I am thankful to GateOverflow for providing a platform for quality discussions and GO Classes for providing the best test series for GATE CS with very good conceptual questions which helped me build my problem-solving skills.

As I had not taken any coaching, I dedicated some time in starting of my preparation to find the best resources. Though there were many resources that I have studied from throughout my preparation, I am sharing some of the resources that I found were excellent for building basic concepts.

List of standard books that I followed:

Subject

Some points about resources:

  • Some of the courses have content beyond the GATE syllabus as well some of which I studied because I was enjoying that, but that can be easily be filtered out by looking at the topics in GATE syllabus pdf.
  • Multiple books/courses do not necessarily mean I studied from both resources fully, I referred to other books/course when some topic had little content in one resource or I had doubts even after studying from one resource.
  • Discussion is very important when learning something since it provides different approaches to the problem. I had discussions on GATE subjects and other related things with my friends in college which made me realize gaps in my knowledge and also helped me see new ways to approach many problems. For this, can also join groups online.
  • For doubt solving, I would recommend searching various resources (top university articles/ppts or books) for the specific topics and reading discussions on stackoverflow or gateoverflow. It might take time but you will learn much more about the topic after thinking about it yourself and reading the discussion with different approaches.
  • Some subjects require more time than others, so don’t try to rush any subjects.
  • PYQs are the most important part of preparation, don’t skip them.
  • Can also try out NPTEL assignments or relevant assignments of top universities.
  • The only trick I know about solving questions faster is to practice more questions, so I can only recommend the same trick.
  • Revision is necessary.
  • Try to reduce Silly Mistakes! (Most Important! Mere aise questions glt hai exam me silly mistakes ki vjh se jo bina preparation walo ne bhi shi kiye honge)
  • Don’t be restricted to just the resources shared, explore, prepare well and enjoy learning

There are many other things which can be found on many toppers’ interview on youtube but I feel like some of those things are subjective. Some make long notes, some make short notes, some don’t make notes and some even keep a notebook of mistakes. I made long notes of some subjects, short for some and for some did not make any notes (don't recommend this though).

For test series, I fully recommend GO Classes test series since their questions were from very good and standard resources (Some questions I recognized from the assignments of top university/courses in the tests :P) which will help in building concept as well as applying all those concepts (Loved the AIMTs since a lot of aspirants are giving exam at the same time so it feels like real GATE exam). I personally don’t think there is need for multiple test series as I couldn’t even attempt all the tests in GO Classes test series until the end and was able to attempt only 5 test from one other test series.

Most of these resources I had compiled from various blogs(mentioned below) and https://gatecse.in/

Some useful blogs for more resources:

I made ..sort of "entries" on the different days :)  posting as is... I hope it helps the people who are starting/ thinking of GATE, it will surely give you a kick-start to get to study right now!

Result: AIR 175 GATE 2024, 3rd year with some college...

11 Feb 2024

The day after the exam.

Hi! I am Devashish, yesterday was D-day for me and I would like to record my candid thoughts about my preparation journey, looking back, I see lots of highs and lots of lows but I hope it will all be worth it in the end.

My process:

I was not able/ did not want to do the subject/topic wise tests because of time and scheduling constraints but since I had started early, I was able to handle them at the end after completing the syllabus. You must find what works best for you, my process was to first complete the subject vids with any worksheets/in- class ques properly. Then I used to directly solve pyqs, if solved correctly using correct method then all good, else the harder ques/ the ones I got wrong I marked and tracked for future revisions, then after maybe 2-3 subjects I used to come back to them, usually half of them got solved at this point.

The last months were the toughest, i started in Feb end 2023 so it was a long time to prep but it was also my third year so a lot of time went to college too, the start was very normal, I felt neither good nor bad about when I started, Feb, March, April, etc. went oks.

I knew about GO too, but I only studied the free C course by then, It was so good that I decided to join, BUT, I had bad experiences with coaching so I also made a very deliberate decision to only follow my own timetable/schedule of subjects and manage college lil bit, then July came and I was behind in my own schedule, so I started crazy study: one subject morning, afternoon, evening types, it could only be sustained by me for just 1 month then due college exams and burnout I took like a  week off, that was a -ve point, don’t do that mistake, I wasn’t affected by it much because I had studied DLD in college properly and that grind of 1 month mentally exhausted me but also polished that subject, would not recommend such experiments if studying any subject for the first time.

Then I re-evaluated my strategy and realized the importance of load balancing, I would recommend that have a ez/liked subject parallelly with a new / disliked subject, then sept came and I made my 2nd mistake, superficially completed the syllabus and wasted a week in thinking I know this I know that, but I knew somewhere in my mind that it was not true and just an excuse for not studying much.

So now started the most crucial part: actually testing myself, I did GO test series, usually got about ½ of the total marks, also got 0.5/25 once,  but I tracked the mistakes and oct to nov I finished 1 revision and sub tests of whole syllabus.

Now I had a good idea of my weak subs COA + compiler+dbms etc

So dec two weeks went in strengthening them. I started full length mocks from dec 20, got in range of 30+ to 68+ but highest was 71, lowest 39 in GO tests only, so I knew my knowledge was not deep enough but I compensated for it with syllabus coverage and time management. I gave mocks every 2nd or sometimes 3rd day.

It was like a Sine wave, but you should know that mock marks do NOT matter, they only tell you that some ques you solved and some you did not in that moment.

Don’t make the mistake of not analyzing mocks. Analysis tells you what concepts need revision/ clarity. And that is what you need in the final months, revision, but in a way that simulates the exam, randomly getting ques from wherever topic and being able to revisit the whole concept just by thinking about it in a short time. This is a skill that you develop by giving mocks. Make sure that the test taking strategy works for you, if not then change it to your own taste.

I also took it to heart that whatever  I don’t know doesn’t matter but whatever I know MUST be correct in the exam.

I could not sleep the day before the exam, I was very excited for it, gave shift 1, felt it was easier and a thousand times doable than any GO test I had ever given, because GATE asks the basics and fundamentals, so yeah, that’s it, hopefully I will get a good rank and won’t have to grind again in 2024. Now waiting for the result.

19 Feb 2024

Marks and Answer key released.

So it’s now 19 Feb 2024, the gate 2024 answer as well as response sheets are out, predicting around 160 AIR, its an awesome feeling, 72.33 marks, so yeah. Feels great, like a huge weight has been lifted away from me, I feel lighter and very happy, kind of like in a daze, some part of me cannot even believe it that I did so well. This is awesome! It’s a great feeling!

Checkout Amit Khurana sir on YouTube, his channel helped complete half the preparation.

GO is Awesome! They teach soooo well, I fell in love with cse subjects.

I’d also like to thank my professors, who helped me clear my doubts and guide me on the subjects, my friends, who used to take up my college work for me and helped me focus on the things that mattered, they also supported me so much throughout my preparation, my roommate Braj, who helped me study and taught me the importance of planning and execution. It was awesome to work with such great people who helped me succeed.

PS: I remember that the GateOverflow profiles of the people were also a motivating factor for me, I used to look at them when doing pyqs/taking breaks, the effort and time invested by all these people and imagining the hard work they did fired me up in the last months due to which I was able to stay on track.

That points system is a great thing! It gamifies the preparation and is an amazing mechanic.

16 March 2024

Finally got the results, AIR 175, Score 831. Rank me toh gadbad hai, 72 – 73 marks pe air 151 hain logon ki.

But I guess they have adjusted the scores accordingly ; I was getting predicted 160 rank and score 818.

Nice.

Finally, everything is right in the world. Mehnat ka fal milta hai, bas sahi direction me lag jaao sab kuch laga do…

I want to give a shoutout to my amazing college friends; Braj, Arijit, Akshant…without these guys I would have failed those semesters, Lol… these people are gems, and also my awesome college professors who helped me soo much.

YAY! Cant wait for whats ahead, abhi toh 3rd year hai, getting internships and stuff now. Will keep in touch with GO and this amazing community! Cheers!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tools / techniques I directly learned / followed / stole / got from the toppers :)

Use notion or obsidian for tracking pyqs, toggle the answers and keep snip of every ques did wrong.

Regularly do quizzes and tests to avoid tension later, but if not able to, then also don't panic, can cover with extra effort in the end.

Always refer proper resources and learn the concepts correctly the first time, if messed it up you will have to put in extra effort to fix it.

For those who still have not "found" your order of subjects / "schedule" i will advice as follows , feel free to change according to what suits you, I'll tell the acc to pre requisite.

Do probability, discrete math first

DLD do before COA, TOC,CD,OS,CN

TOC do before CD

CN do near the middle of the preparation its huge n needs practice.

OS do around COA can push to end time

DBMS is ok to do near sept, etc, after the harder subjects are done, revise discrete with this one

LA fit anywhere

Don't ignore aptitude. Do GO pdfs pyqs, gateandtech telegram channel, just maximize marks from here, they are free....

Always remain consistent, even if you become lazy and miss a few days then mentally compensate for it by working harder, on the flip side, don't work sooo hard that you burnout, i kinda lil bit did at the end, but all is well that ends well.

Don't let test marks affect you, it is not GATE, it is not the end.

In the later months you may start fearing the exam result, convince yourself that it doesn't matter, the mind plays tricks on you because it is tired, it doesn't want to work... just know : work implies output, work in the correct direction, you will do well, just don't get caught up in the whys and the what ifs, it is just wasting crucial time... get on with study.

Hope these help, I plan to stay in touch with this amazing community, feel free to chat.

I thank GO forum , GO classes, all the free resources that i followed, and above all, my friends and family.

Hi everyone,
I am Sakshi Joshi, currently pursing my MS CSE at IIT Madras. Since the GATE results are out, I have wanted to write this post for a long time because I was in a similar phase as you, struggling to get a good rank but miserably failing because of a lack of consistent efforts from my side. Still, I managed to get into IIT Madras, which taught me huge life lessons. Philosophy aside, I wanted you to know that My gate rank was just 2890 when I joined as an MS student here, So the route that I followed is a bit different from that of a regular GATE student, which will still require hard work, but in case your GATE didn’t go as you expected it to be and you can’t afford to take year drop then, I think the resources which I share here and my approach might help you to get into your dream college.

My Score statistics:

GATE 2021[First Attempt]:

  • Score: 405
  • Rank: ~7800

In GATE 2021, I didn’t apply anywhere as I feel that my concepts are not very clear, and I need to prepare more rigorously for the examination. I joined GO classes this year and realised I had a lot of gaps in my concepts and also I lacked practice.

GATE 2022 [Drop year after B.Tech]

  • Score 455
  • Rank  4384

For GATE 2022, I prepared some subjects well, and have a foundation in Computer Science but, again, lacked practice, so I decided to join somewhere. I have never had industry exposure or research experience coming from a tier-3 college. I am very much interested in pursuing research in AI/ML (that was my main reason for pursuing a master's degree). This time I applied to all TOP IITs whose research area matches mine. So I applied even to PhD programs because I was not sure if a direct Ph.D. was a good thing or not, but for the sake of interview experience, I applied. So In order to gain interview experience, I applied to all top IITs, Industries, and Project Positions in some labs that were of interest. Along with it, I filled out the forms for various other exams like JEST, PGEE, ISI, and CMI.

I maintained a sheet that covers all the information regarding the application [1]. You can follow the same format for your area of interest.

Even if you apply in any area for CS, these topics are a must

For interviews, I was watching GoClasses, Foundations CSE + Logic + Functions and relations

AI/ML

Extra Resources Which I didn’t follow at that time but might be useful for you.

[1] Counselling sheet for Myself – https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bxEyyT1XIfcud3AQ-ylQpW7enGkaIfP7cURQUgWiwIE/edit?usp=sharing

GATE 2023[After joining as Project Associate at IIT M]

  • Score 505
  • Rank  2890

I did two courses, one Linear Algebra and the other VLSI, in December 2022, but I also switched labs within IIT Madras; hence I got shortlisted for an interview in May 2023.

How to apply for project positions?

Either on the IITs website page or go through their professors list, which works in your area of interest. Mail them and ask if there are any opportunities available.
List of professors at IIT Madras CSE:http://www.cse.iitm.ac.in/listpeople.php?arg=MSQw

Labs at IIT Madras CSE: http://www.cse.iitm.ac.in/labs.php

There is a new department of AI and Data Science at IIT Madras, So do apply if you’re interested in AI/ML: https://dsai.iitm.ac.in/academics/mtech-in-data-science-and-ai/

This is for IIT Madras, but there are similar categories of admission for other IITs as well. You need to look into their website, read the brochure, and apply. Don’t just think that your GATE score is low, so you will not be called for interviews.

I got calls for

  • IISC PhD Written  clear written + Interview: I didn’t clear the interview (Winter admission)
  • IIT Bombay Cminds – written: I didn't clear the written. (Winter admission)
  • IIT Delhi MS yardi School of AI – Didn’t attend the test (Winter, summer both)
  • IIT Kanpur written test for MS, but because it was offline hence I didn’t go (Winter + summer admission)
  • IIT Hyderabad MTech CSE RA (Winter) Written + Interview (Cleared Both)
  • IIT Hyderabad MTech AI RA (Winter) Written + Interview (Cleared Both)
  • IIIT Hyderabad PhD  Cleared written(PGEE) but didn't go for an interview. (Summer)
  • IIT Madras Research Park project associate CEET Lab – Applied through LinkedIn – Got selected and joined.
  • IIT Madras Project Position (Speech lab interview through gate portal ) – Winter admission  (Sometimes, when you apply for MS at IIT M but your score is not good enough for MS, then you might get a call for a project position it’s rare but professors may shortlist you for the project instead of ms directly so write good SOP which aligns with your interest and skills don't leave it blank. )
  • IIT Madras AI4bharat Lab Project Associate (Winter): Mailed to the professor; they took two interview rounds Deep Learning related. I Got selected and joined.

------password.txt (to save all your portal passwords)

Some important points

  • Read college admission brochures properly
  • Apply even if the data says otherwise
  • Keep learning and practising

ALL THE VERY BEST EVERYONE.DON’T LOSE HOPE! :)

I want to thank GO classes from the deepest of my heart for giving me things I never believed would be mine. Deepak sir and Sachine sir lectures not only help you in GATE but also for clearing the interviews, and acing the subjects here in IITs as well.

Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

6. What is the difference between Stack & Queue?
7. Tell us about your final year project?
8. Which Programming Language did you use in your final year project?
9. Which Programming Language you are most comfortable with?
10. Give one example of Supervised Machine Learning?
11. You are not doing job, so what are doing right now?
12. Why did you started your preparation for GATE?
13. How many Layers are there in OSI layer?
14. SMTP protocol works on which layer?

I am not adding resources for the subjects already present in GATE CSE as there are already many blogs on gatecse.in and gateoverflow.in. Also, there are some other topics like Data Warehousing but I think some simple Google searches should be enough to learn those topics.
All the very best and happy learning😊
