Greetings y’ all!

Almost everyone may have applied to various IITs by now and as we all (i hope) know that IITs will make their admission offers to the students through the COAP. I’m of the students who have applied to various IITs and is waiting for this whole procedure to start.

Now the thing is I’m quite paranoid when it comes to such events and I like to be prepared. So I would really request seniors, who have been through this procedure before, to give us some bits of advice(s) on how to approach the offers made on the portal.

I would also request the applicants to post their queries in the comments so that they can be answered. It will be really helpful to all.

Thanks!

Many of you might be wondering how to prepare for Interviews and though many experiences are already given (Interview experiences) I just wanted to add a few points:

M.Tech. TA Interviews (for CSE this happens in IITD and IITK and IISc CDS/AI) are slightly different from Research ones. They will mainly check your CS skills which include understanding Algorithms, Data Structure, Coding and Aptitude in Mathematics – mainly Probability and Combinatorics.  Coding Interview preparation  and Prepare written interviews major subjects focus questions  should help.

For Research Interviews it is slightly different. In 1-2 months you cannot do research and most Professors won’t be expecting that. Instead they will check how good your basic understanding is and how you are able to adjust if something different (a twisted question) is given. There is no use in trying to study a lot of questions or concepts because Professors will be at an entirely different level and they can see through you in 1-2 minutes. So, be confident in what you know and what you do not know. NEVER say any blunders. If you have followed standard books – that’s like 50% job done. If you have done coding – that’s another 25%. In most IITs/IISc – Professors struggle to get any good student because current generation is used to spoon feeding and not able to do anything on their own. Those who are watching videos to fill in Application forms – better not go for Research Interviews – there will be no videos telling you how to do it. Somethings you can do as extra are

  1. Fix your area
  2. Shortlist the Professors working in that area
  3. Try to read and understand their work
  4. If you have genuine queries you can even contact him/her

Some of the Research Interviews might have a written elimination round and so preparing for Course program interview is also necessary for those going for Research Interviews.

In short, if you’re good and useful everyone will want you. Otherwise no one will want you. For GATE, only ranks within 100 or 200 are valued and rest will have to show the worth in Interviews. This is because you should know how difficult it is to get 75+ as compared to 60+. So compete with those above you and become worthy of joining IITs.

I am a final year student at Vidyalankar Institute Of technology

GATE 2019 was my first attempt and I managed AIR 45 with a score of 78.33.

I didn't hear about GO nor was it referred to me but if you don't stumble across GO in your preparation journey, you might be on the wrong road. I joined a coaching classes in January 2018 but knew that, it won't be enough. I went through the resources given by the classes and gave the past questions book the highest priority. We learnt CN as the first subject and I started with it. I checked my solutions with the one given by classes but soon realized it was highly inaccurate. I decided to google the questions and there was it, the first link itself from GateOverflow. Then I was hooked. I used to confirm each question I solved by using a combination of google voice (Okay Google!) and GateOverflow. Just searching like literally 3 keywords from any question leads you to GateOverflow. I ran through the website and also saw the tutorial videos on how to use Go series (Very helpful). It had all the information needed to pursue GATE on your own. I continued my coaching but majorly followed the best resource videos for each subject. I also enrolled in Made Easy, Ace academy test series and solved the topic wise tests in abundance. Scores rose slowly but positively. I started solving full length tests from November and solved upwards of 50 (I wouldn’t say a time waste but surely not nessesary). My logic to solve so many tests (I know they can be irrelevant) was that each institute knows what to ask about a domain so if I dont know a concept which has been used in the test and its relevant I used to note it down. I was the person who finds reading and revising to be impossible so the tests were my revision method. It works like this, you stumble upon a question that you dont really know how to solve, you try to fit concepts you think might solve the problem, in doing so those concepts gets revised! Disadvantages of doing so, You make a freak ton of silly mistakes as you tend to stop reading each question properly considering you have already read similar questions properly.

I had kept every question of GATE 2018 from solving and I solved the paper. Solved the untouched paper on 31st December 2018. Got about 60.33 in that. If I had given GATE 2018 then my rank would have had been 250 aprox. It was a pretty positive and I had a month to improve on my score. To do that I bought the GO Pdf Hardcopy. I say a lot of thanks to people behind that book and also to them who had the idea of turning it into hardcopy. That book made me push myself to my current rank. It also made me score 74 in TIFR 2019.

Now some quick stats;

Coaching contribution: 25% (Classroom + Amazing friends + Amazing proffessors)

Test series: 25% (Made easy + Ace)

GO: 25% (All answer contributions + Resources + ……..)

Getting your ass to study everyday: 25%

I super greatful to all the professors in my college who were supportive of me to not sit for lectures and be so motivative. Amazing friends who supported me from college, my coaching buddies who kept me on my toes with healthy competetion AND all the people who contributed to GO and I learnt from them.

I didnt mention any names here as I will forget to mention someone or other without whom it wouldn’t be possible.

All the best to everyone who will be giving exams in future and congratulations to everyone who made it this time.

ps. If anyone will be applying to IIT B TA, do tell me as I plan to do the same.

This is my 3rd time giving GATE (passed out in 2017). By my own stupidity I did not take any job that i got on campus and now I am suffering from joblessness. Score predictor puts my score in 54 out of 100 which is not enough for IITs and even NITs in good CS M.Tech specialisations. Now I will take the BARC IIITH BITS and ISI examinations along with CMI, But I am not at all confident about even qualifying for interviews. My Lack of quality project works and internships closes my prospects for any jobs. What should I do? I am confident that I can do better next time in GATE but should I go for 1 more year loss or should I take admissions in any other Master courses.

Please advise and need help regarding this. I am extremely sorry for breaking any site rules and problems to those who think this is a waste of time. But this place is my last hope.

For those who want to know I messed up in probability questions and in total LOST 16 marks due to my mistakes. I will accept that my preparation in mathematics was not upto par.

Please please advise.

Hi,

With just a few days left for the examination, I am yet to practice questions of TOC. In fact, I have just used the video lectures by Prof. Kamala Krithivasan (IITM) available on YouTube, without a reference textbook. So, my concepts aren’t that strong anyway.

I need suggestions, from which areas should I practice the questions from TOC, which are more probable to appear in the exam, so as not to miss the relatively easy problems, and score a couple of more marks.

Please note that currently, I am busy with revisions of other subjects/topics, and I feel it will not be worthwhile to devote time on TOC when my concepts in it are not that good. I could use this time on my strong areas.

Thanks.

Can we have a daily quiz of 5 or 10 questions?

What I see is there are several questions still unanswered. Can admins arrange such a quiz so that these questions can be covered in the quiz ?

This will keep us in touch with the problem practice. It will also help us to solve those unanswered questions. If imp questions are kept in the quiz, then we can discuss those questions and after 4 months we would have covered more than 1200 questions.

@Arjun Sir please see if it is possible.

IIST is conducting interview for M.Tech in Machine Learning & Computing on 4th June. Do candidates have to bring their resume to the interview? If yes, then do I need to include my final year project in the resume if I am 2017 passout? My final year project was not up to the mark. The list of things to be brought for the interview given on the call letter does not contain resume so I am confused. Please someone guide me. Thank you.

Hello everyone, I am selected for M.Tech Computer Science in University of Hyderabad through CCMT counselling in round 1. Please let me know if it is worth it to do M.Tech from here. How is the faculty and location? I have also given M.Tech AI in UoH as a higher preference but didn't get it in first round. My gate score is 584. I have already dropped a year after b.tech for GATE. Do I have a chance to get M.Tech AI in further rounds?

I Had only studied for 2 months for GATE 2018 and scored 517. When I checked IITB Cutoff For SC category, I found out that It was 500. So I satisfy their Cut Off for admission process. But does it mean I'll get a seat for Mtech ? an interview at least ? ... I know it is not a very good score, and I have already decided to study for GATE 2019. But still... I was wondering if it is possible for me to get admission this year... Also, Can anyone please explain what exactly the difference is between merely satisfying requirements and getting admission

PS: Any small detail will help, So, Please comment as soon as possible as I don't know whether I should fill the admission form or not ! ... and deadline is 11 - April - 2018

Well after the results were out, I decided to apply for MS at NUS and NTU( thanks to the GO community, someone let me know here that they accept GATE score). However, I find that I cant apply for their July admission as the deadline has already ended. Probably, February was the last date. Can anyone, who has applied there or has any sort of info, let me know if there is any other way around to apply? I have decided to mail them. However, any sort of advice in this regard will be highly appreciated.
