I am Jaynik Gaglani and have obtained AIR 26 in GATE 2021. My actual marks are 69 and after normalization I have obtained 72.89

I am a final year student pursuing B.E. in Information Technology from Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi College of engineering in Mumbai. It is a good college with good placements for CS and IT branches. I did not sit for placements except for 1-2 companies because my focus was completely on GATE.

Some tips and Advice:

  • Don’t rely on last month/week, try to finish everything on time.
  • Past failures don’t matter, just keep interest in subjects and you are good to go.
  • Please don’t keep any specific mindset like biasness towards certain subject. All subjects are easy if concept is understood.
  • Minor hiccups like less marks in certain tests don’t matter.
  • Please read questions thoroughly and don’t assume anything unless told so and also practice more problems to improve thinking skills, speed and accuracy.
  • Just persist even in tough and boring times, that phase will pass.
  • If you are giving topic wise tests simultaneously with the topic then give it 2 – 3 days after you finish the topic in order to increase retention capacity.
  • Analyze each test properly by checking all mistakes and unsolved question.
  • The comment section of GO is itself a good resource so check that too.
  • When solving PYQs with multiple option correct given in MCQ, solve them as MSQ without checking the options. Also, solve each question with its true solution, that is without tricks like option elimination since it gives clarity to concepts, improves problem solving skills and lots of such questions can come as NAT where such hacks are not applicable. You can definitely use whatever solution you like in the exam.
  • Don’t forget to understand basic concepts of maths too.

Preparation:

I started my GATE journey from March 2019 (Semester 4) when I joined Gateforum offline coaching. I took offline coaching because I was not disciplined and also had not done proper research that online coaching is better for GATE since for me, coaching institute was 1 – 1.5 hours away from my house which wastes a lot of time. They were on weekends for total 13 hours. I was not at all serious for GATE then as I had started thinking that the exam is 1.5 years away. I kept making notes in classes but didn’t study seriously and solved PYQ myself in the class as taught by faculty. I started studying seriously from June 1st 2020. I had most of the notes with me and started watching lectures on YouTube and gateforum online. I finished my portion around October and PYQs around mid – November as I used to study in a pipelining manner. Complete a subject from all resources, give topic wise tests, give subject wise test. Start next subject, start PYQ of previous subject. And in next subject, revise the first subject.

I was using gateforum PYQ book for solving but whenever I didn’t understand questions/solutions, I used to google them. Initially, I used GFG but some answers in there too were confusing which led me to temporarily use GO. Once I started seeing some great answers and my other doubts were also getting solved through comments, I started using it full time for solutions. Just exploring, I came across the pdfs which I decided to solve later. A mistake I did as the pdfs have very good accessibility by just clicking a question redirects to GO and also the bookmarks.

I used standard books just for theory topics in OS, CN, DBMS and also some topics like sockets for which I didn’t have any material. I didn’t prepare for aptitude much apart from profit and loss and time and work as I had prior experience with it and also got practice with the help of test series.

At the end of October, I prepared short notes from my own notes, bookmarked questions from tests and from GO comments. One advice here is that when you read short notes, you should be able to recall everything from main notes and lectures else check them again.

My preparation journey was not only studying all day though. On an average in these 5 months, I used to study around 5 – 6 hours a day. During June – July, I also used to do competitive coding and various extra courses. Completed watching The Office US from June to January, used to play games, watch movies/tv shows, went out once or twice a week. But didn’t do this between studies, I had a time dedicated for all this after lunch, so don’t get any wrong ideas. The thing is that GATE is basically an aptitude test so just the core concepts matter. Once you know the concept and have problem solving skills, you can counter any problem.

Last Months:

I kept giving full tests every alternate day except for days when we had the semester exams. Before 8th Jan, I kept switching times from 9.30 to 12.30 and 3.00 to 6.00. After 8th when I found that I am in set 2, I gave all tests at that time. I even gave at least 5-6 tests with mask. I also started using GO PDFs for the first time from December 1st when I was doing PYQs for the third time. I marked some conceptual questions with specific comments in book for seeing in the last 7 days, completed PYQs of all subjects except aptitude till 9th February. I only had last 4 days to finish marked questions which weren’t many. Though for some topics in CN, OS and COA I checked most of the questions again.

I also kept revising from my main notes (used short notes later from around mid – January). On days when I didn’t give full tests, I gave MadeEasy topic-wise/subject-wise tests just for revision, solving more questions and also increasing accuracy. I analysed the test series after giving each test to know my mistakes, new methods to solve problems and any new formulae/concepts. In the last 5 days, I checked all the marked questions, questions from my weak topics, gave GO Test 5 and kept revising from my short notes.

This was a sprint period and I used to study averagely 7 - 8 hours a day including test series analysis. I had stopped going out of home from around January 15th so as to not catch the virus. Also, in these two months, I just used YouTube as an entertainment tool and watched one movie: “The Pursuit of Happyness” (it’s a really good movie to watch when you feel down). At the time of study though, I used to study with full concentration and without distraction.

Test Series:

Totally I gave 35 full tests just to make a habit of sitting for 3.5 hours and also to practice more questions and also improving my accuracy. Also, I used to give them from 3 to 6 after it was confirmed again for keeping my mind active at that time.

Ravindrababu Ravula Test Series: Used just 2021 series, the questions are basic and on easier side. Used its release date as my schedule for studying and gave tests 2 – 3 days after completing the topic. Though, I couldn’t follow it after August when CN came due to a bit of burnout and start of college. I left some multi subject tests at the end. Started full test on 29th November. Gave 14 full tests.

Highest Marks: 87.33, Lowest Marks: 63, Avg. Marks: 76

Gateforum Test Series: Used for extra practice questions. Didn’t give all tests, only for weak topics. Full tests were good but other tests were basic. Gave 6 full tests.

Highest Marks: 78.33, Lowest Marks: 63.33, Avg. Marks: 72

MadeEasy Test Series: Bought it in December, gave most topic wise and subject wise tests just to solve more questions as they were really good though sometimes out of scope according to me. Full tests were also good, gave 13 full tests.

Highest Marks: 74.33, Lowest Marks: 62, Avg. Marks: 69

I also took GATE 2020 paper unseen at the end and obtained around 74 marks giving a really good confidence boost at the end.

At the end, on 10th Feb, I gave GO Full Test 5 for that shuffled paper feel and obtained only 51 marks which shocked me but regained my confidence with the help of my mentor, Gitin Kakkar sir who was my TOC and Algorithms teacher at Gateforum and helped me throughout my journey with some really great advice and also doubt solving. Also, read comments of Arjun sir as my handle name was mentioned in the list of 50+ marks. And my parents motivated me too to not worry and finish it off on Saturday (Day of exam).

Exam Day:

On the day of exam, I woke up at 9.30 having a good amount of sleep. I was surprisingly very calm as I knew I had done whatever I could on my part and there is nothing much significant I can do now. Though had some sudden anxiety, overall, I was fine. Just took some deep breaths and kept calm. Left for centre around 12.30 with my parents in a car and reached there at 1.45. Went to exam hall and closed my eyes till the instructions came. When the paper started, I did the first aptitude question just to not leave the first question of the paper. Then attempted CS section calmy just like giving test series. The trick to solving was keep going on and mark for review whatever I could definitely solve later. After solving everything, I just had 5 minutes to check the mark for review answers and a mistake I did was not marking even ones without any negative marking while parsing them. I lost marks in optimization question where I forgot to count addition in for loop and one where I gave answer as Syntax Error. Also did mistake in Boolean Function question where answer was 6 and I got 10 (due to missing out some value as I didn’t have much time) and not reading the math question on finding standard deviation which was pretty basic. I attempted 60 questions including random guesses in total.

The questions are always new but it doesn’t matter as concept is important and if you know the concept then any question is easy. This paper was not very difficult just the questions were a bit lengthy. The main thing is to read the question fully without missing any word so that you don’t have to read it again and since last few years some questions are coming such that they have one word which completely changes the answer.

Final Result:

In CS Section, I got 17 one-mark questions correct and 8 wrong. I had attempted all of them. And 19 two-mark questions correct and 6 wrong out of 25 questions attempted.

I got full marks in General Aptitude, Algorithms, Programming and DS, Databases and 10/11 in TOC which boosted my performance as these were my strong subjects from start.

Final marks were 69, though less, but due to difficulty of paper, I could get a really good rank out of it with a score of 918/1000.

Finally, I would like to thank my family, friends, all the teachers and GateOverflow for helping me achieve this rank.

Thank you for reading,

Jaynik Gaglani

2. Study Tips

Revision : Using Spaced Repetition

Anki: Create Q&A format Anki flashcards for topics difficult to remember or topics rarely asked in GATE

Test Series Timetable: Used retrospective timetable using Google Sheets

Here’s a sample: Color indicates how I felt about my performance and date indicates when I attempted them. Using both these metrics I chose which tests to prioritize during the last 2 months.

Solving questions: I divided my notebook into 3 equal parts so that I get used to taking less and narrow space. During your initial period before you start test series you can use cstimer to put yourself under timer pressure and improve your speed(but not at the cost of accuracy). I also used the same pen throughout GATE preparation(Technotip).

Can anyone upload a DRDO previous year papers/ link.

I don’t remember completely but someone had pasted the link on a blog here a year ago.

Thanks in advance. Gateoverflow is one the most wonderful site I had ever used in my entire Journey to AIR 89.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I kept using gate overflow for solutions which I didn’t understand when I was solving PYQs from my classes book. In November I came across GO PDFs. I solved all the questions again during December – January and checked many solutions and comments. Many solutions completely changed my understanding to topics. The community is the best with so many knowledgeable people and aspirants. We also get multiple approaches to same problem as many users have uploaded their own solution. Gatecse website also has amazing resources like video links, question papers, etc. I did not use it much but it was also very helpful. Also, the rank predictor was so perfect that it was unbelievable.

Predicted Rank: 26 – 31, Actual Rank: 26

And now it also has subject wise marks.

Finally, I would like to say thank you to Arjun Sir and GO community for helping GATE CSE aspirants throughout our gate journey. Without this portal, atleast my journey would have been a bumpy one.

Thank you. :)

Hi guys, I am Arathi Nair M. This is my second attempt in GATE (CSIT)- 2021. In GATE (CSIT) 2020, I got AIR 11966 with 30 marks and in GATE (CSIT) 2021, I got AIR 306 with 60.6 marks. This might not be much, but I hope it is good enough to get into a good college.

Feel free to scroll down to resources and advice if you don’t want to go through the whole journey.

If I can, anyone can!!!

A Little About Me

I am a B.Tech (Hons.) graduate in Electronics & Communication Engineering(ECE) (2016-2020) from College of Engineering Trivandrum(CET), a government college in Kerala. In my school days, the subjects I loved the most were CS and Maths and so was planning to do B.Tech in CSE. But since I got admission in ECE in the best government engineering college of my state, I ended up deciding to do my M.Tech in CSE.

GATE 2020

I don’t remember when or from where I heard about GATE exam. Somehow, I came to know about it and realized, I will have to write GATE if I want to do M.Tech. But what I didn’t know then was, I could write GATE CSIT instead of GATE ECE. I thought I could get admission in M.Tech CSE only by writing GATE ECE. So stupid of me… I know… haha.

In short, I started my GATE preparation in ECE. But thankfully, I realized that I can write GATE CSE around the time GATE 2020 application form was out and obviously, I decided to write GATE CSE. But, by that time, it was placement season and I got placed in a product-based company and as expected I relaxed and decided to work for one year and then join M.Tech. So, I took GATE CSE preparation too lightly. Basically, I decided to write GATE 2020 as a confidence booster.  I borrowed books from my friends, and studied the easy subjects including digital logic, DS, Logic and a bit from TOC, CN, DBMS and Algorithm. That was pretty much my whole preparation for GATE CSIT 2020.

GATE 2021

As the first step, I decided to enroll in a coaching and joined ACE Deeplearn. It had recorded classes and I thought I can watch them whenever I feel like and also if I join the company (which I didn’t), I won’t miss any classes. I joined Deeplearn in May 2020, but got a bit busy that I started my preparation only in June (And in between at times I didn’t prepare when I needed long breaks). I started watching lectures and writing notes. Here I would like to mention my first mistake.

“I concentrated more on finish watching the videos and far too less on doing more questions and in all subjects except one or two I didn’t solve questions other than those in lectures at that time.” Mistake 1

I started with subjects that were easy for me. This was a trick to boost my confidence, I guess. And I prepared Engineering Maths and Discrete Maths in between technical subjects. After a point, I realized I remember only a few things I studied until then and I didn’t have a short note to revise from. This was my second mistake in the initial stage of preparation.

“I didn’t make short notes in the initial stage of my preparation.” Mistake 2

The best thing about making short notes is on writing it again, it stays in mind for longer and if proper revision is done, one will remember those concepts for a life time. I started preparing short notes (even though my short notes are long, thankfully not as long as original notes) after finishing around 2-3 technical subjects and also a few topics from maths. Here starts my third mistake.

“I neglected revising many subjects until the last few days before the exam, which ended up in me not being able to revise all subjects before exam and this panicked me and I lose a few marks from well known topics.” Mistake 3

Basically, I listened to lecture, note down everything and made short notes then started another subject and continued this pattern. In case, I feel bored while studying a specific subject, I either took break for a few days or start a new subject which piques my interest. It is really important to feel fresh when one decides to sit and study.

“Started being lazy for some time as I had only around 4 subjects to finish” Mistake 4

This mistake costed me to lose marks from 3 subjects. I ended up not studying half or even more than half the syllabus of three subjects.

After being lazy for some time, I decided to do previous year questions(pyq) and questions from ACE workbook. For this, I prepared a timetable and tried to follow it. But making a time table never worked for me till date and as expected, this time too it didn’t work for me. I like to take days off when I am not in a mood to study and also when making timetable, the habit of pushing me to do far more than what I can take, didn’t help me in following the time table. I consider this as my fifth mistake.

“Not making realistic timetable” Mistake 5

Even after failing to make a realistic timetable, I did a fairly good number of questions mostly pyq except for a few subjects. For the rest of the subjects, questions solved in class were the only practice I had.

The thing I am sure I did right is that while doing questions, even when listening to lectures, I tried really hard to find answers myself and only then checked their solution and learnt it too if they used a different method. I might end up not getting the answer or while checking I end up finding a far easier solution but I never let it discourage me. This is one of the most important habit, which helped me get this rank even when I did so many mistakes.

After this I did one of the four subjects, I didn’t yet cover the syllabus of. By that time (Dec last week or Jan first week) I realized that I forgot to make short notes for 2 to 3 subjects I covered and also that I didn’t yet do test series except for two. In those test series, I got only 49 marks each. I decided to not study anything new anymore. Even though, I had studied a bit of the remaining three subjects, I didn’t finish them. I chose to make short notes while revising over studying new things.

In between making short notes I did a few test series. I attended test series from ACE Academy, free tests conducted by Gradeup, pareeksha series of unacademy and did two or three previous year question papers. But I could find the marks of only two of them and as far as I remember, I got less than the lowest mark I mentioned below in previous year question paper in the third one.

Test Series Marks

ACE Academy:                 Lowest: 49          Highest: 63

Gradeup:                          Lowest: 50          Highest: 56

Pareeksha:                      Lowest: 48          Highest: 62

Previous year paper:      Lowest: 53          Highest: 56

“I didn’t even bother to analyze the questions which went wrong while attending test series.” Mistake 6

I didn’t analyze those questions thinking I don’t have enough time. But I now know that is a stupid excuse. Moreover, what happened was I lost confidence and decided to take no more test series. Stupid move but still a wise move as I was not analyzing where I went wrong and was simply taking tests. I recommend gate aspirants to not lose confidence at any point of time. Working hard is the only solution to success.

Once I stopped giving test series, the only thing I did was revision. I watched YouTube videos of Gradeup. I watched selected playlists of them along with some other videos which I thought I should watch. Along with this I revised my short notes, except for some portion as I said earlier. But the effect of low marks in test series stayed with me, and my confidence level was pretty down.

Exam Day

I was pretty nervous. As I said earlier, I decided not to join the company, and it added to the nervousness. I was afraid if I lose one year for nothing and so on. I wanted to give the best but these thoughts made me so nervous and actually affected my marks.

“Being nervous during the exam hours.” Mistake 7

Being nervous, I did silly mistakes in few questions which could have been easily avoided otherwise and thus, losing the chance to get a rank within 100. But if I be honest, after my exam, mainly due to my nervousness I guess, I thought I did my exam very poorly and is not going to get good marks.

Advice for Future Aspirants

  • Believe in yourself no matter what. You are the best. Never let anything or anyone take away your confidence. Work hard for what you dream.
  • If you are planning to make a time table, make a realistic one which will not tire you. Find out what is best for you.
  • Don’t neglect aptitude and maths. They are really scoring areas.
  • Solve questions related to the portions you cover. Try solving it yourself before checking the solution. Check the solution even when you get the answer correctly, you might be able to learn a new method.
  • Make short notes and revise it regularly. Regular revision is a must and short notes makes it easier. Don’t neglect a subject from revision totally just because you know that subject well enough.
  • Never procrastinate. Try finishing the portions as early as possible.
  • Do as much test series as possible but never let the marks make you feel underconfident or overconfident.
  • Analyze every test series you attend. Dedicate the time after test series to analyze your mistakes. Read the short notes from that portion and if you are making mistakes in that portion repeatedly, read notebook or even standard text books if needed.
  • Be calm on the exam day. Take deep breaths. Believe in yourself. Don’t waste too much time on lengthy problems. You can come back to it after the first round of answering questions.
  • Don’t just read this article, but do not repeat the mistakes I did during my journey.

All the best!!!

Conclusion

I thank Almighty, my family, friends, teachers from ACE Academy and Gradeup for helping me in achieving this rank.

Hope this article is helpful. I might not have the best rank but still feel free to ask in case you have any doubts regarding preparation.

Thanks for reading

I was graduated in the year 2020 from Silver Oak College Of Engineering And Technology which comes under Gujarat Technological University, Gujarat. It was Tier – 4 colleges I got admission there because of my JEE performance. Yes I also gave JEE and my rank was in six-digit xD: So I left hope of a good college and pursue my B.Tech in computer science engineering. I always (here I mean whole engineering community xD:) tend to study one night before the exam. Though I was getting decent CPI(thanks to my friends and YouTube :) ).

My Gate Journey:-

Okay, so it will be a little longer. Enjoy :).

I first heard about GATE from my roommate who was a senior and also preparing for GATE. At that time I was in the 3rd semester. Then after a few days of research and discussion with my friends, I decided to prepare for this exam. I knew that I will learn all CS subjects which are important and it is a national level exam, so I was very excited to learn all these subjects and enjoy the journey. And also I never prepared for any competitive exam so I was very excited.

Then I joined an institute which is located in Ahmedabad itself named “The Gate Academy”. there was only one batch that runs on the weekend only. So I used to attend class on weekends and on weekdays I have to attend college. I joined coaching at the end of my 4th semester. And I was very much focused, so hardly attend my college(Thanks to my friends and Faculty member who put proxy so I could prepare for the exam xD ). I also explained the importance of GATE to my parents and told them I will keep my CGPA above 8 but I could not attend college so if college does not allow me to sit for the exam then please help me xD: They were very supportive and allow me to prepare for GATE. All things were going well my concepts were also building well. I was good at focusing only on GATE as I have no college work to do (Again Thanks Those Good Friends :) ). I was doing good in the test series not that much good but comparatively good. But I left COA as I was not able to learn and understand that subject.

Now comes the exam day. I still remember that day very well 8th February 2020. I entered the exam room with a positive mindset although I did not prepare for COA (I thought that in 2019 only 4 marks came from COA so I will manage that in 2020). But when the paper started I was shocked, I had a habit of starting the exam from the first question itself And SURPRISE………. The first 5 to 6 questions were from COA. And that was enough for ruining my whole exam. After that, I could not solve even easy questions and end up getting 29.67 marks with AIR 12320. It was not like that coaching was not good, many of my friends got a decent score and got their dream college. It was because of my fault only.

On the very next day, I regretted it a lot because of one subject I ruined my two years of preparation. On that day I called my parents(I was staying in a hostel)and told them I ruined my GATE exam and literally, I could not stop my tears. They told it is okay it was just an exam. I told them that I want to take one year drop and prepare for GATE one more time. This time they were against me because they thought I am telling it to satisfy my ego. And they told me to find a job. At this time my friend helped me a lot. She knew I can surely do better than this because she Shawn me preparing for this exam and she knew my capacity. So she agreed with me to take one year drop and prepare one more time. So I explained to my parents that don't judge me on the basis of this score I can surely do better than this and I will prove it. My sisters also helped me by letting me take one year drop. At last, my parents convinced but they told me that they will allow only a one-time drop.

Okay, so from here journey started for GATE 2021. As I wanted to start fresh I joined the coaching institute one more time. But this time I joined at “ACE Academy Hyderabad”. But due to COVID, I could not go to Hyderabad, I stayed at my home only. I was very clear that I will do each and every subject again no matter I did that subject earlier or not. So I started preparing it. This time I am very much clear with my not-to-do list. I have an aim to get AIR under 500. what I used to do is suppose today one topic is covered from a particular subject like for example if today IP addressing is covered from CN then after the lecture, I revise class notes then solve questions from ace volume 1 then volume 2 then bits and bytes and at last pyq. At the time of pyq I almost solved tough questions so it will be easy for me to solve them. many times if I could not get ans for pyq I used to visit GO Website for the detailed solution it blew my mind. It has such an in-depth solution. This continuous for every subject.

Then comes Test Series. This time my performance was good in Test Series. On average I got 20 out of 25 on the topic-wise test, 40 out of 50 on the subject-wise test, and 65 – 75 on the full-length test. Test series will play an important role as they manage your time and also tests your knowledge. But never map test series marks to your original exam marks.

The Exam Day:-

I was pretty cool on the day of the exam. I had a morning slot so I reached the center early and was listening to songs. By that time I gave many full-length tests so I prepared my mind to write one more full-length test :). Paper was easy as compared to the afternoon slot but it was surely trickier and lengthy than GATE 2020. I did some silly mistakes(due to that I got 53 marks otherwise I could get around 60 marks). But no regret as I was able to solve hard questions.

The conclusion: –

  1. Never compare your marks with your friends
  2. Never compare Test Series marks with Actual Exam.
  3. Do not ignore aptitude and maths if possible do it as early as possible.
  4. Do not leave any subject.
  5. Revision is your girlfriend you have to take care of her. Otherwise, she will ruin your life.
  6. Prepare every day. Do not focus on a number of hours.
  7. Be prepare for everything. What I mean is don't assume that your paper will be easy or tough.
  8. Remember “All late nights and early mornings will pay off”.

Still at the end. I am satisfied with my score. GATE taught me how to manage time, how to handle pressure, and whether you are from tier 1 college or tier 4 college it will not matter. My suggestion is at least one time in your life to prepare for a competitive exam it will teach many things.

I know I have not a good rank to guide anyone but still feel free to ask anything. I will try my best to answer it.

Thanks for reading.

You can now add subject filtering in Pragy’s App to view your marks excluding any set of subjects and also see the set and normalized ranks with the selected filter. This way you can identify the subjects where you performed the best and not so the best. Try it now…

Suggestions welcome...

Huge thanks to GO and the community for making a dream come true!

My GATE 2020 marks were 42 and my preparation was also not up to the mark. So I decided to drop out and give my best for Gate 2021 and in the process decided not to take any online Coaching. I Completed GO PDF 3 to 4 times during my preparation which helped in boosting my confidence. Also, a huge thanks to the GO Test Series community. The level of the questions was just perfect to push myself just a little more to get more marks. Slowly but eventually, I saw myself grow from 30 to 75-80% marks. I was hoping to get the same result in the main exam and thankfully i got 71.67 marks(after normalization). Thank you GateOverflow!

IIsc has released dates for written test.

I know nearly all the current/previous toppers are on GO, can you guys please share what to read for the test? I’ve read past year interviews but most of them had choice of subject to get asked on, a liberty we might not have in the written test.

Just a point that before starting gate preparation one must know that tough and easy topics from the syllabus.

According to me most difficult to grab is COA(Comp. Organization and Arch.) and second is CN(Comp. Networks).

Most Easy and Scoring are Programming  and Data Structures and TOC(Theory of computation).

My Personal Advise would be:- Even if you go to coaching ,  and have not studied COA in ur college or not done in depth, plz try to do COA beforehand(lots of free stuff can be found on youtube,or diff  gate websites and coaching) , so that when you are tought in coaching your main focus is on understanding it more in depth and not just sitting there and all understanding nothing. When I did COA for the first time, though the lectures seemed as if i could do all the quetions easily , but when i starte to do PYQs, i literally gave up all hope, it was taking around 25-30 min each question to solve , in which i used to do 10 questions normally. So, I just did COA completely again and this time i got more in depth and finally ended up understanding it. COA is difficult to grab but once you grab it, it becomes most interesting subject.

Talking about CN, actually it is bit less difficult than COA, but super wide subject, with very very bug course. Just keep in mind , in coaching you will be taught all important parts , all which in 99.99% asked in gate, but that 0.01% in CN is actually again a very big part. IF u want to leave it u can as very rarely such questions are asked ,  but no one knows how rarely so better be prepared. Just find CN syllabus and match what you have studied and what is left. do those all.

Lastly , bit difficult is probability in Math, specially Random Variables. Try to not just mug the formula but understand how to apply those, as question may be confusing sometimes, which random variable to be used and which not.

Rest subject can be done easily, just keep good revision of all.(If u need how to revise I have already posted revision strategy post :)

one can start with easy subject , but not just go randomly but in connectivity, ie,

Programming, DS    goes well with Algorithms.

TOC goes well with CD(Compiler Design).

Digital Logics(DL) goes well COA, and COA complements OS(Operating System)

DBMS and Discrete Maths

Aptitude goes with Discrete maths and probability from(Engg Maths)

Rest of Engg maths and CN usually goes unconnected .

Hello guys.

A lot of you recently saw my post on Facebook and gave it a lot of love so firstly thank you for that.

I thought why not make a small(actually long) motivational post to encourage all future aspirants to give their best shot at this much coveted exam.

So i completed class 12 in 2016 and aced my boards exam. But also ended up messing up my JEE mains.Did decently well in WB-JEE with a rank of 1739.Upon recommendation by some people,I joined Heritage institute of technology but didn’t find the cost to value ratio of the college good.No offence, its still a great college, but given the financial condition of my family i decided to somehow prepare for WB-JEE again and enter Jadavpur University(fee rs.2500 per year), no matter what branch i get.So gave WB-JEE again, got a rank of 3349 and got admission into Printing Engineering.Sadly I was not able to fulfill my parents dream of seeing me behind the gates of IIT.I had always loved Computers and wanted to pursue computer science as my career major.

One good thing I learnt about in Heritage was about GATE exam and how it could help me realize my dream of studying Computer Science from an IIT. So basically, my plan was pre-decided since the day i enrolled in Jadavpur University, to study and prepare for GATE.

Since I was from a different department and had to literally study like 2 engineering courses(printing and computer all core subjects),standard books weren’t the optimal choice for me. So after some research, I ordered made easy postal study material in an attempt to study and prepare on my own. But as you may have guessed,it failed.Colege pressure and lack of motivation denied me any progress whatsoever. But my money or study material didn’t go into vain. You’ll know later why.

So in my second year,I contacted Gateforum(closest institute to where i stayed in Kolkata). They told me that for Jadavpur students they would offer 50 percent off on all courses. So i decided to take up classroom course, but in the last moment for some reason decided to add in the usb course too. So I started attending GATE classes on weekends and tried to study during weekdays by keeping my college attendance minimum.Things went well few few months but then again as luck may have it, Gateforum ran into some problem regarding their classroom building and they had to shift centers and all that.As a result,my Gate prep totally slumped. I ended up not attending college and also not studying properly for Gate.Wasted a good 6 months like this.Completed only like 3 subjects that too not properly.

Come march 2020, lockdown was announced and I had to go back home. And lo-behold, my usb course that I had purchased came in handy.I dont know how,but being at home and seeing my parents struggle to make ends meet,it sparked something in me. I decided then and there- “I WILL GET A JOB AND CLEAR GATE AS WELL”.Also a lot of people tried to demean me due to my department, due to fact that I was a fitness freak, because I played computer games and because I was in a relationship. They meant to say that all my focus should be only on studies. My motivation was not to prove them wrong, but to prove myself right and be an example for many people.

I started preparing hard. Spent 5-6 hrs on a daily basis watching lectures and making notes from usb lectures. At the end of every subject, I would solve all the past year questions of that subject. This ensured  that I was practising while even during the process of making notes.By the end of september,i completed note making of the entire syllabus.Remeber I had taken postal course of madeasy? That came in very handy in clearing my theory doubts, conceptual doubts were cleared via gate overflow. So with a combination of gateforum usb course, gate overflow and made easy postal course books i was able to build a good foundation for all subjects.

Then all i focused was on rigorous in depth revision as many times as possible till the day of Gate exam and solving as many questions as possible.I solved questions from a variety of sources, subject tests being the main source.By mid of december I had given atleast 3 subject test of each subject with about 6 full revisions. Then i started giving full tests,I remember scoring only 55 which really made me sad.I thought my preparation wasn’t good, but after reading some motivational articles, I decided not to give up till the very end. I ended up scoring an average of 70 (across all test series combined) and average of top 30 ranks in tests. I was confident that if a paper is difficult for me,its difficult for many others too and not because my preparation was very weak.

I spent januaray 2021 giving full tests and deep revisions of subjects.I didn’t give many tests in the month of februarary and mainly focused on revision and staying healthy.

Also point to be noted during my entire preparation,I always kept sunday as rest day, worked out 2 hrs 6 days a week and played games 1 and half hours daily

On the exam day, I didn’t focus on getting some rank or some particular score, but only to give my best.(Ofcourse deep inside i wanted a top 100 rank cause i had prepared so hard).I gave the exam well, didn’t really panic or all that, but maybe due to lengthy paper(I was in set 2) I made some crucial silly mistakes in haste, like in the multiplexer question i found the correct answer and marked the wrong option(-2.66),in big endian question I selected an extra option, realized it but ran out of time to uncheck it(-2) and a few other mistakes which cost me a top 100 rank. But its ok,given the nature of set 2 most of the candidates suffered.

I came out of the exam, happy about the fact that i had given my best.Ofcourse in the upcoming days,I used to get sad whenever i used to find i got a question wrong, and also remember crying when I realized what I had done in the multiplexer question. So this continued for few days then everything seemed normal, until the set 2 syntax/semantic question controversy(ofcourse I am a syntax guy).I challenged that question with many others, but that answer wasn’t changed.

Result day-Opened portal:Gate rank-206 Gate score-798

Mixed feeling for first few seconds as rank predictor had predicted rank around 170-180.But then I realized in my mind-

“Dude. You are a guy from printing engineering. You are a guy from a department  that people used to mock saying stuff like ‘what the hell is printing?,surely u cant code?, leaving cs in Heritage was a big mistake’ and all of those kind comments. Why are you sad? You beat all adversities to get a rank of 206 in an exam of 1,01,922 candidates ,you beat many guys from CS department. You fulfilled the target you had set.You are going to fulfill your and your parents dream to study from an IIT(touchwood).Yes  marks more would have fetched you top 100,but on contrary 4 marks less would have taken you out of top 700.Be thankful to God for this gift.Enjoy the moment!”

Also during this time(mainly march to september) I had being doing competitive coding on codechef and codeforces every other day, devoting 2 hours to it.I sat for Hack with Infy competition organised by Infosys, cleared both rounds and an interview to get placed as a System engineer specialist(5.5 lpa) in the month of september.I was also shortlisted for TCS digital but due to covid-19,they had imposed one job rule in my college which was not there earlier. So my target of being placed in a decent place was already completed quite early and I could devote full time devotion to Gate.

So thats all guys.Just wanted to convey a small chapter of my life.I hope you find some inspiration out of it if you are in some low phase of your life,or just in general.

Remeber guys,if you work hard everything is possible.Apart from Gate and placement, I also did internship in IOT,as a journalist, learnt playing guitar, sang on stage, built a good physique in gym, and did  countless other things.I was and still am in a relationship since 5 years. It didn’t hamper my preperation whatsoever, because I always had my priorities set right. The money i saved by enrolling in JU came in very handy especially during lockdown. So no regrets of being a graduate in printing either.I am forever indebted to the almighty,my parents,my grandmother and my girlfriend for the way they always supported me.

Remeber,if you give your 100 percent, there is no chance you ll get a 0 in return.Always give your best and be thankful for what you have.Whatever happens happens for good.If you are focussed on your life goals and know what you want out of your life,no one can stop you.If a guy from printing department can do it,you can too!

Hope you achieve all your dreams and make your parents and all your loved ones proud.Best of luck.Peace out <3.

only difference between gate and iitjee is that iit jee may be hard but has only 3 subjects mainly, but gate has its own difficulty parameters, ie, remembering all 12 subjects till the end , which really becomes a major issue.

I had three types of notes:-

  1. FULL – SUBJECT COPY
  2. FULL – SHORT NOTES(In around 3 to 4 A4-pages)
  3. MICRO-short notes(in only one A4 page, with only most important points and formulae which you have difficulty to remember)

HERE ON I WILL TELL WHEN AND HOW TO MAKE THEM AND I WILL BE CALLING THEM AS:-  1)NOTE,2)NOTE,3)NOTE RESPECTIVELY.

Once you complete one subject with all 1)NOTES , and start with next subject,it will be ok but once you het till the third subject the one you read at the start will bw almost out of your mind. Same continues on as you proceed with other subjects.

Solution = 2)NOTES.   As you finish one subject sompletely, make a short notes copy and after solving all prev year ques of that topic, make 2)NOTES out of that subject, in no more than 3-4 A4 pages, as you only want short notes and not another replica of your old notes.

Revising the 2)NOTES is much easier than 1)NOTES,  MY way was after every subject ends, I used to quickly revise 2)NOTES of previous subjects(is say 4 subjects already done, then 3 subjects via fast revision of 2)NOTES, and any one subject of full revision via 1)NOTES) and continue this routine for all subjects one by one, this will help you keep all subjects info in your mind.

ONCE, YOU ARE OVER WITH THE SYLLABUS, NEXT IMP. POINT IS TO REMEMBER ALL FORMULAE,AS           12 SUBJECTS*(100-200)DIFFICULT FORMULAE = nearly 2000 formulae to be remembered(only talking about difficult one, easy one can be more in number).

Solution is 3)NOTES:-   once you have done all subjects , now you will get to know which subjects which part, and which formulae are you laking, Take one A4 or atmax two A4 and write down only the key points in , and where to keep it is, “””PASTE THOSE IN YOUR ROOM’S WALL”’’’’, so that when you wake up early in the morning you first see those points on the wall and just spend next 30 min-1hr, revising all 3)NOTES on the wall. AND you have to do this standing and not laying on the bed. Once you have read all those 3)NOTES you will also see that the sleepiness one have in while waking in morning is also gone as you were standing all the 30-60 min and now, you have no more sleep left, now you can continue whole day with full energy.  I had done me 3)NOTES with such confidence that even without seeing those notes on my wall , i could even mug those formulae like a poem.

and at last but not the least, if you want to wake up in the morning, PUT AN ALARM, BUT “NO SNOOZE”, SO THAT YOU WON’T BE HAVING CHOICE TO SNOOZE FOR NEXT 5MIN , BUT ONLY TO WAKE UP.

GIVE  Your BEST and You CAN DO IT,

ALL THE BEST.

Truth is one cannot start to study for 13-14 hrs on the very first day. You have to start from a small amount of time for which you are comfortable, Eg→ 5 to 6 hrs daily, day time by time increase your limit. Just remember “21 days RULE” , it always works, ie, any habit can be taken by practising it for atleast 21 days continuously .

I started with 6 hrs daily, which also felt as a burden to me in the start , but after 21 days 6 hrs was seeming too less for me , so in next 21 days i started to study around 9-10 hrs . in about next month it was also not a big issue to study 10 hrs daily . Now, actually 10 hrs is enough for gate . But, as i was in final year, I had less burden from the college and only 2-3 subjects so I thought to increase my limits further, almost upto JEE aspirants, ie , 14 hrs daily , and almost 85hrs+ each week. It was something very difficult to pursue , waking up 6:00 am and going all the way till 12:00 at night. with few breaks in between after every 3 hrs.But again 21 days rule did help me achieve it.

One strategy i followed was work 6 days a week. Reasons:-

  1.   14 hrs * 6 = 84 hrs(almost as i wanted)
  2.   Leave study completely on sunday , One may think that I am joking, But I myself practised this,Why? Becoz, If you keep working daily your efficiency gradually goes on decreasing, but if you skip one day for rest , your mind would not allow it , and thats waht we want , as just thinking that we are wasting lot of time whole sunday, sleeping and watching TV (only tv an no social media or web series), your mind will release diff harmones for under pressure and by the night you would be so much pumped up for the next day that on monday you would be super ready to start again 14 hrs daily. Just try once the above method, and once without it and then see which prefers you as choose for the best according to your body requirements.
  3. But finally, it is better to study 10 hrs with 100% focus than to study 14-15 hrs with  lack of concentration.
  4. Lastly , Fix a goal and just say to your mind that you will not accept anything lower. Doing so will atleast fetch you some good things in that range, so just aim big, very big. For my case it was IISC Banglore and ISRO , just seeing their picture also should kept me going. I just wanted to have them in any case, nothing except them were acceptable.I got an injury in my thumb in november and doctor said to stop writting as it may grow even worse , but that was not an option. As said in CHICHHORE Movie “Pain can give you pain If you allow it to do so”.and I had not given it that permission, three months I continued with by injured and painful thumb , least caring about that.
  5. Lo and behold, I finally got AIR-152, that day I actually felt the pain in my thumb ;), it was very painful but I was happy as it was the remembrance of my struggle to achieve my goal. I am not sure how long will it take to cure my thumb or would i have to go from some surgery but actually what matters is that I was able to bring a smile and pride in face of parents and family members.

--->>>SO IN THE END, IT DEPENDS ON YOU WHAT YOU WANT TO ANSWER:-

ques1) can i get some iit or not??

ques2) Which IIT should i choose among the top ones and which to leave?

IF YOUR MIND SAYS “ A BIG YES” TO THE QUES (2) , THEN YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK, AND NOONE CAN STOP YOU .

                                                            ‘’’’’’’’ALL THE BEST TO ALL’’’’’’’’’’.

First of all, I would like to thank my parents for giving me the freedom to do anything, especially to bear and support me. Our parents work very hard to give us a better life. And also thanks to all my friends, teachers, and aspirants here on GO, Special thanks to Arjun Sir.
My name is Nikhil Dhama, I got AIR 8 (980 score) in GATE CS 2021, This was my second attempt with full-time preparation.
Last year my rank was 1531, I guess this is enough introduction for me, I’ll get to the point now…

How did I prepare for GATE 2020?

I followed some coaching material(freely available, wasn't enrolled) blindly, I won’t name it here, Actually it was all my fault all along not following some good content, I did nothing else, not even pyqs. This turned out to be a big mistake. I realized it later after losing a year. Now After preparing again I think it’s for the best that I didn’t get a better rank last year, otherwise, I would have gone for post-graduation with half misconceptions in my mind and that would be a disaster. I didn’t even deserve 1531 rank last year, it was too good for my preparation level, preparation was way poor (soon you will know why I’m saying so).

What makes me drop and prepare again?

I enjoy learning stuff, I like solving mathematical problems with low-sound music :p, so I was sure for post-graduation. For this reason, I did not sit for campus placements, because I didn’t want to have a second thought if I had a placement in my hand. I left no choice for myself other than a drop or taking some college with this rank only...

Why didn’t I apply for some other tests like PGEE, ISI, CMI, last year instead of repeating?

No doubt there are many good colleges in India, but after giving Gate 2020, I realized my concepts are not that strong, I’m missing something, and second I could do much better. This wasn’t my best, I wanted to try again.

I decided right after the result of GATE 2020 that I will prepare again. But the first step was to analyze the mistakes I have done throughout my preparation and during those 3 hours inside the examination hall.

Mistakes I did last year...

The first mistake I made was to trust in the coaching material and their false claims, I got a bit lazy, the second big mistake was not solving pyqs.
I was overconfident last year, during that 3 hours I could not even read all question, left 8-10 questions unread. This shows a lack of practice and time management, as I invested lots of time on few particular problems, that turned out to be wrong later :( Maths is my strong suit, and I couldn’t solve a simple calculus problem there. So I had to work on all these things and improve myself.

Steps I took to counter those mistakes...

I checked who is going to conduct GATE 2021, found out it’ll be IITB most probably. I had a very bad experience with JEE Adv 2015, I knew what these people usually do. This gave me a hard feeling that what if I fail again? anyhow I got through that.. and started looking for the solution to my mistakes.. decided to read books thoroughly this time.
I researched for 10-15 days and gathered all my study material for the preparation. My first stopping point was GO, found almost everything I need. Enrolled in the test series as early as I can (gave tests from GO and applied only). and improved on each of them one by one.

What was my schedule for preparation for GATE 2021?

I started slowly around 4 to 6 hours a day, enjoyed the rest of the time, watched some movie or anything, then shifted gear in July and changed my preparation time from daytime to nights.. started studying from approx 3 PM till I could, with small breaks in between. Every day studied at-least till 4 AM, for some days I stretched it till 7 AM, depending upon how much interest I have in that topic. This was my daily schedule, with minimum full-day breaks.

I divided the weekdays into two parts, Mon-Fri study with the same schedule, Sat-Sun solve pyqs from the topics I covered earlier, usually a different topic from what I studied during that week and give a test or revise everything I studied during the week or any topic if I got stuck in pyqs. This way I was doing both preparation and revision side by side.

Took a break for 20-25 days in Oct, had to give final sem exams.. started back again.. and finished the syllabus by the end of Nov. Only a few maths topics were left... I was already confident in those topics. I started giving tests late, from the beginning of Nov, I don’t suggest you do it. I had less time and had to cover lots of stuffs.. also sharp memory helps me keep things longer in my mind. Was doing well in tests.

By the end of Dec, I was done with the full syllabus, one-time revision, and all pyqs.
Changed my schedule from Jan, admit card was out, got the morning session, so I had to adapt myself to that timing.. took me 15-20 days for it... In Jan, gave a mock test almost every single day, analyzed my mistakes during the day, and revised in the evening. Every third day of the month I solved one previous year GATE paper as a mock test (from 2011 to 2018 at sets).

Appeared in GO mocks, almost everybody here knows about those.. took a test by Ruturaj Sir 2 days before the exam.. just to have the feeling of a hard paper and be ready for the worst-case as I was already expecting a hard paper.
Gave all these tests for time management, GO subject tests were an informative and conceptual test for me.

NOTE: you need not follow this schedule at all, I like studying at night.. and wanted to read everything in a short time, that’s why this schedule.. make your schedule at your convenience, which suits you the best.

What resources did I follow?

You can find them here.

While reading books, I found out I had many misconceptions and was lacking basic details of almost all of the concepts.. that’s why I didn’t deserve any better rank than 1531 last year.

How much stress was I having during preparation?

You can imagine by reading my schedule... side by side I was going through emotional stuff which needs to be taken care of, I decided to keep all such thoughts aside and kept focusing on my preparation, sometimes I even started to feel like a failure that I couldn’t do anything and many more stuff.. but I made it through, the good thing is I enjoyed studying all these concepts that’s why I never got bored or exhausted with my schedule. I wanted to give my best.. and I was targeting 90+ marks, so it was all worth it. I would like to add that there was a time once where I couldn’t read or study anything for 8-10 days, it’s alright as long as you make a comeback, also it’s necessary to take small breaks, I used to play online cards and video games, watch movies during my breaks. Just find your comfort zone.

How did those 3 hours inside the examination hall go?

To be honest I wasn’t feeling like I’m going for the exam until I reached the center and sat on my allocated seat... Started to get some butterflies after sitting there.. plus I prepared myself to attempt the exam in a single pass without revisiting too many questions.

It’s almost 9:30 AM and the exam starts, directly went for CS section, the first question was based on the covariance of two parameters of a distribution, damn I left this topic just because it was not required for GATE, I knew one part of it.. but couldn’t take a risk of -0.66.. so just left it.

10 mins past I have seen 4 questions, only 1 attempted.. situation got a little bit tensed now. I closed the question window so that my mind won’t divert by looking at how much I have attempted.. started attempting one by one.. with 15 mins spare, I was at the end of the paper, I opened the window again, and felt a bit relaxed, only 9 questions were unattempted.. attempted 5 more in that 15 mins (4 of them turn out to be correct).. so in total, I attempted 61 questions, 52 correct 9 incorrect, 8 out of 9 are MSQ or NAT so no negative here. Only 0.66 negative marks in one question.

Final result

The first official answer key was out, one big debate on one aptitude question, the official key was against me ;-; It could cost me a lot, but finally things settled in my favour, and both answers were given right in the final key.

I got 80.33 marks in set 1 (before normalization). Now I just had to wait for the final result.

Got AIR 8 in the final result.. still feels like I’m dreaming :))

I hope this covers almost everything. If anyone has any queries, feel free to ask.

GATE-18 : In 2018 my father told me to appear for GATE exam as it is helpful in many Govt. jobs so I appeared. I got 14 marks(didn’t qualify).

GATE-19 preparation: In June 2018 I completed my UG(CSE) from 3-tier university. I was placed in a SBC(service based company) and most probably they would give joining letter in Nov so I thought of preparing for GATE as I had lot of free time. I started preparing from youtube videos but within a month I got joining letter from my company and I joined. With job I completed 3-4 subjects and appeared for GATE-19. I got 29.33 marks(didn’t qualify).

GATE-20 preparation : This time I was serious about GATE. Continued my preparation from April with youtube videos(Biggest blunder which I did but realized very late). I didn’t study from books or NPTEL lectures because it was too boring for me. In November I took 3 months leave so that I could focus only on GATE. I went back to my home for preparation. When I started revision then I realized that it is tough for me to recall the concepts as I didn’t do any revision once I completed the subjects. Somehow I managed it and appeared for GATE-20. I was able to solve aptitude and most of the 1 marks question. But the real terror started with 2 marks questions and I panicked. When paper ended I knew I screwed it but I learned few important lessons:

  1. Follow standard books or NPTEL lectures not some random youtube videos.
  2. Revision is must and you must practice a lot.
  3. If you are doing self study then try to have a group of friends who are seriously preparing for GATE because it is very easy to get distracted and get demotivated.

I got 46 marks(rank : 2732) in GATE-20.

GATE-21 preparation: I went back to my company and resigned after 2 months. This time I didn’t want to take any risk so I thought of joining ME coaching so that I will not get distracted from my goal and I can push myself. But due to COVID there was no offline coaching. Since I already resigned from my job and there was no offline coaching I had only one option that is self-study. This time I tried to clear my doubts by referring standard books and practiced a lot. But my biggest enemy was distraction and it used to take 2-3 days to get back to my study routine. My planning was to complete the syllabus by Oct but it went till mid Dec. By 10 Jan(2021) I completed my subject wise tests. Then I started giving Full length tests(ME,ACE,RBR). But in none of them I could get the feel of GATE exam. So I solved all the GATE PYQs from 2011-2020 as Test series from GO. I noted all the mistakes and tough questions separately and whenever I revised a subject I used to go through it. This helped me to avoid silly mistakes and my marks improved. I was ready with technical subjects but didn’t practice aptitude as time was less(and procrastination). On my exam day I had only one goal “solve all the solvable questions without any silly mistakes” .

Mine was set 1.

180 min left: exam starts, started with aptitude section (couldn’t solve two 2 marks question)

160 min left: starts technical section

20 min left: 1st round of technical section was done, now tried to solve unsolved  questions in technical section(preferred 2 marks questions first)

5 min left: went to aptitude to solve those two questions

2 min left: couldn’t solve it and now I realized I should have practiced aptitude also.

1 min left: went to technical section and did guesswork in unsolved NAT and MSQ.

I got 65.33 marks(Normalized marks:63.76),  Rank:179 Gate Score: 807

My journey of gate 2021

Some facts before the start of this post and requests.

1]please don't get offended.

2]modi hai to mumkin hai(take it as you want)

3]Mitaoe is best college in india

Hello guyz

This post is regarding Gate results 2021 CSE.yesterday Gate results are announced and

I am here to share my journey with you people so that it may motivate you and help you in your life.some 100000 people have written gate cse 2021 (don't know exact count just like the government dont have data of death of  covid warriors).

Yesterday i got air 477 in gate cse 2021 my marlks were 58.07 and my score was 738 out of 1000 it was one of proud moment for me(feels like ab bolna madar****).

Now why I decided to give gate first of all.

I was in my second year happy with life for no reason .I wanted a good internship. Someone motivated me by saying “paisa hi paisa hoga” ,I worked hard ,I did projects,I learned hell lot of things. Now something very bad happen to me (no not breakup you dirty mind).i applied to amazon for 6 times, flipkart 2 times, uber 1 time,no replies not even “sorry we can't go forward with your resume reply”(gazab beizzati hai yarr) .some people called me for interview and these were their replies(“we can take you but you have to pay fee”,”we can take you but you have to work for 9 hrs without stipend”,”you are good but we will give stipend only to top3 interns as they are from **** colleges``,”we pay but only to college recruits you are not selected in your college that's why you are here so we will not pay you”).Now I almost ended up dealing with numerous people and my whole hope was lost. Don't  want to say but  tear fall from eyes don't know how and that day i was just feeling like fuck i am the dumbest kid in the world and shittest in terms of knowledge. After that i decided to give gate.

3rd year first semester i collected all important subjects notes and decided to prepare on own but very sooner i realised(“beta tumse na ho payega “).I decide to prepare with coaching.Me with my partner(gate partner bro) sahil joined gate ,he was having bike so no wastage of time and join this institute cant take name but yeah it is best selling in at least pune.and now this shityy people have their coaching for 8 hrs and that too fees is hefty and also only 2 days a week .they complete subject in 2 days believe me gate subject completion in 2 days is just too quick even johnny sins cum at lesser speed than these.and just after some months of joining corona came and fucked everyone of us completely.but our coaching was so cooperative that they forget to contact us for four months.yeah four months ha matlab log bhul jate hai quiet understandable.

Somehow i managed to complete the syllabus before october from different sources(i will make separate posts on sources)and started with test series.i join made easy, ace academy, applied test series this year none of them were useful though bit of madeeasy, applied was good.i was consistently scoring around 60 in each tests which i used to give made hell lot of friends on facebook(don't consider angel priya i broke up with her).these people help me to solve enormous amount of doubts and not to mention they were top rankers like air 237,air 477,air 300 ,446 something like that and finally on d'day we all made it .

Key learning from this post

1] be in contact with toppers they will  help you a lot in your journey

2]join gateoverflow, gate cse zeal both these groups on facebook if  you aim for gate(it helps alot)

3]try to give enormous test don't solve same question twice

4]repeat revision otherwise no results just make it like a habit of night you know what i mean(3 nights in a week)

5]keep in contact with friends gate is for one year and friends are for life

Note:those who are confused with jobs and higher education from a dream place believe me you are going to do a job for the rest of your life but the environment you will get in these 2 years is something which you can imagine and can never forget.live your life to the fullest and never leave any regrets.

For study material i will make a post along with each topic and will post it today only thanks if you have come up till here bit sarcasm in post just to help you to don't get bored.

Sources which i followed for my preparation

1]nptel lectures just few for important topics like dma

2]gateoverflow solutions they serve as as bibble for me during my entire preparation

3]some classnotes which i made and notes of some dedicated teachers which i find in telegram groups

JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES CONSIDER YOURSELF AS AIR1 OF UPCOMING YEAR AND JUST GIVE YOU SOUL TO THESE WORK FOR ONE YEAR.

Hello , my name is Bodhisattwa Dasgupta . This year I got 66.29 Marks and AIR 123 in GATE (CS) – 2021 , and this was my first attempt in GATE. It’s not the best rank , but decent enough to fetch me a good IIT hopefully ( hence the title...)

My Background:

I’m currently a final-year student , pursuing my B.Tech in CS at Future Institute of Technology , Kolkata. It’s a Local Private College here in Kolkata which was established just in 2015. I never was a good student at anything throughout my school days and most of my college life. I remember in 11th  class Mid-Year exam I failed every subject other than English and CS , the amount of judgement I got from my classmates and teachers were tremendous.

For those who are wondering , I attempted JEE Mains 2 Times, 1st time I got ~1 Lac Rank and in my 2nd attempt also I got ~70k Rank. So nothing to write home about. All throughout my academics I absolutely despised subjects like Physics , Chemistry ..etc , the ONLY thing that made sense to me and I enjoyed was CS ( in school-life it was basic coding and DS stuff.. ) and bits and pieces of Maths.

So naturally I choose CSE over other branches in better colleges and this was the BEST decision of my life.

My GATE Story:

I first heard about GATE from my friends in 2nd Sem and then after a few days of research I decided to prepare seriously for the same. The idea of studying CS from Top IITs intrigued me a lot and not just that , an All-India based exam based fully on CS got me very excited.

I never had any Coaching till this point in my life , but since I decided to prepare seriously I enrolled @ ACE Coaching back in Jan 2019.

But unfortunately for the entire year ( from 2019 to Dec 2019 ) I only attended the classes and didn’t put much effort myself , as a result in Late Dec 2019 , I found myself at a very bad position , I had all my class-notes but couldn’t recall any concepts. (MISTAKE #1)

So from Jan 2020 , I decided that I’ll put consistent effort from now on , and try to get a sub-500 Rank. I made a time-table and started preparing accordingly. For each subject I used to give ~2 weeks , and in that 2 weeks first I used to learn the concept , then look at examples and then finally solve the PYQs in parallel. Using this approach I more or less got over with my syllabus by July 2020.

In the month of July I wrote my First Full-Length Test and I got ~62 Marks in that. (  The test was an easy one.  ) , But here I noted that I scored very less in aptitude section , but I ignored it. And I continued to ignore Aptitude for the remainder of my preparation ( MISTAKE #2 ) , why this is a mistake you’ll see later on.

From Aug onwards I decided to do revision and I did so by solving all the PYQs again, this time From GO-PDF. ( Previously did from ME Book ) , and this blew my mind. For each and every problem , extremely detailed solutions were available at GO along with necessary references . And this not only helped me to Learn more BUT ALSO helped in developing a habit of reading standard papers/articles/wikis/books. Which I feel is going to be very useful later down the line for M.Tech.

From Sept onwards I started writing tests more often and regularly. After writing the tests I used to rectify my mistakes.

My marks in Test-Series are:( Avg / High /  Low )

  • Made-Easy = (74 / 87 / 47)
  • ACE = (82 / 91 / 68)
  • Applied-GATE = (78 / 89 / 65)

Looking at my performance I assumed that I’d surely get a sub-100 Rank ( MISTAKE #3 ) . This mindset would prove detrimental in my preparation.

Things were going pretty good until in Mid-Jan we tested +ve for COVID , while it didn’t affect much but after that point there was a noticeable dip in my test performance. Still I was fairly confident with my preparation.

During the GATE Exam:

I got allotted Set-2 which was a bit lengthy and quite different from previous years. First Question was the Little-Endian One , I never solved such questions before but I knew the concept clearly so was able to get it Correct . Same thing happened for the next 5-6 Questions. I was able to solve correctly but took lots of time and my fear-level was increasing as the Question types were pretty uncommon.

After going through the first 25 Questions , I had only attempted 13 Questions and left 12 totally. Now Panic started and every negative thoughts came to mind .. “Will I even cross the 50 Marks threshold?” , “Only 2hrs left , this year gone to waste….” ...such thoughts. (MISTAKE #4) . Since I already had made some assumptions about my performance earlier (see Mistake-3), this was exponentially more difficult.

Because of this Panic-mode , I made mistakes which I could’ve easily avoided otherwise.

Lastly , since I didn't do much prep for aptitude , this really showed in my exam. As I only got 9/15 in Aptitude . Even IF I had 13/15 in aptitude , then probably I would’ve been in Top 60. This is my Biggest Regret YET.

And In retrospect ,It’s quite Ironical that if I didn’t make assumptions about my performance before the exam , then I wouldn’t have panicked as hard and would’ve been able to meet my expectations.

Conclusion and Advice for future Aspirants:

  • Does Test Series Marks and Actual Marks have any correlation? Yes and No .Don’t make assumptions based on test-series marks . If you are not getting good marks , don’t be under confident , analyze and move on. If you are getting good marks , don’t be overconfident , analyze and move on.  But certainly if you are performing well in Tests , that’s great and indicative of good preparation.
  • Revision should be done consistently , otherwise not possible to retain all the concepts clearly. Even if for 10min , just go through your own notes and that is good enough.
  • NEVER Ignore aptitude , because it can make or break your exam. I ignored and paid the price . So take necessary steps and don’t make the same mistake that I did.
  • How many Hours should I prepare?  Doesn’t matter.  But consistency should be maintained even if its 1hr a day.
  • Learn to manage pressure . I didn’t handle pressure during the exam well and suffered the consequences.

Still at the end of the day , I’m quite satisfied with my rank and planning to join IIT-Madras or IIT-Kharagpur. My learning journey has just started and I still have a long way to go.

GATE taught me that your college / background etc NOTHING MATTERS . The only thing that matters is your own Will to Learn and Self-Belief. If you believe in your own ability and put in the necessary effort , then you can surely get it.

I know I don’t have the best rank , but if you have any questions or doubts regarding preparation , please feel free to ask. I’ll try my best to answer.

Thanks for reading.

Hey,

My name is Shaswat and i have completed my Bachelors in Electrical engineering in 2018 from NIT Jamshedpur and was working in a Steel Industry till April last year. After that i decided to quit my job and started my preparation for Gate in Computer Science and secured an All India Rank of 13.

After my 10 month long preparation I genuinely believe that Gate-CS can be cracked by anyone irrespective of their stream. If you have a tendency to think in a logical way then cracking Gate will be a piece of cake for you.

Although there are a lot of preparation strategies online but still i would like to briefly share my methodology that i used during my preparation (But i still think it would be better if you developed your own strategy).

  •  In the first phase of preparation just focus on completing all the lectures/chapters and prepare a detailed notes for them.
  • Also try to allocate some time to revise old chapters so that you donot forget them completely.
  • In the next phase of preparation your focus should be to revise a chapter and solve questions of that chapter. It will be better if you solved questions from some well known Test series because the questions there will be more relevant from Gate point of View. (DONOT FORGET TO BOOKMARK QUESTIONS THAT YOU FEEL ARE IMPORTANT FOR EXAM BUT DIFFICULT FOR YOU TO SOLVE)
  •  After maybe 1 round of complete revision of all chapters you should solve previous year questions. GATEOVERFLOW is the perfect place to do this (HERE ALSO DONOT FORGET TO BOOKMARK QUESTIONS).
  • 2 months before exam, start giving mocks. Donot stress too much on how many mocks you should give. I personally give only 3 of them but i analysed them properly. During this time just revise your notes, highlight important points so that you can do revision later on in a short period of time. (I found highting notes more effective than make short notes seperately). And also re-solve the questions you have bookmarked from test series, mocks and previous year questions.

If you want to connect with me, you can do that via. fb/instagram. My userid is 28shaswat.
