I am  2016 pass out.i dropped a year for gate and scored 461 marks 35 with rank 5361.i took online coaching of Ravindra sir in the month of July and saw his videos till October and practiced gate previous year questions.i did a major blunder by not taking notes while watching.but then I re-watched some videos again which I forgot and took notes.i started giving mock tests from January only .now I feel I didnot put my 100 percent and in great confusion.i want to give drop for one more year but everyone around me is telling me I shouldn't waste another year as i would be asked in interviews and I will be rejected because of the two year drop.I don't know wat to do.please tell me what should I do.

So your confusion is all about the drop and wastage of a precious year. See mate, In IIT interviews nobody ask about the gap, nobody even checks that. Whoever is saying that crap to you, I can bet he never went to IIT. In IIT any company, they just check your CGPI in current course, not even what you have done in your previous schooling/college.

Do not worry, if you think you can make it better than this, then take a drop and kill it. Just listen to me, I have plenty of experience in my life, now when I look back then only thing which I appreciate that when I did not listen what people have said about me or my work. Listen to your heart.

Believe me, this drop change nothing. Believe me. I have been to IIT. I know. I was a member of Student Placement body.

Some great man once said to me, "It's not bad if you waste your two years, early in your life. But it will be very bad if these two years will change your next coming 40 years into a mess". Just imagine the impact of IIT, in your life.

Kindly pardon me if my words sound blunt. But before any person decides to drop a year, he/she should evaluate their attitude towards GATE. You say you listened to RBR's lectures and did not take any notes. GATE is not an exam you can crack by listening to online media while resting comfortably on your pillow.

I don't mean to discourage you, but before you proceed with a full year drop, ask yourself your motivations for doing GATE. I have seen my close friend drop an year for GATE but he got depressed in the middle of his preparation and couldn't even clear the cut off the following year. He ended up in a worse situation than he was a year before.

Considering your current score, you still need a lot of study/improvement. Dropping an year is a serious issue, especially in your case. It wouldn't hurt to get a job now and prepare alongside it.

But if you are 100% confident that you can get the rank you want by dropping another year, go for it whole heartedly. My only suggestion is that make a true evaluation of yourself first.

Hello, I am close to you in situations, I scored 38 in gate 2017 with coaching. Where I mistaken was not reading from standard books, and just reading materials and watching videos, and always trying shortcut for every long process, instead of speeding up and learning.

What I am gonna do is, to take up a job which doesn't eat up my entire day, so I can prepare for gate '18 alongside. I will be buying all reference books and will start from there. Also, now I know my weak areas in a subject, so in fact, we(repeaters) can prepare better. I will build strong revision plans with minimum 3 time full syllabus revision. As I am starting studying again from May, all I am feeling is lost. Do I know this or skip this...? But I am well determined that I didn't chose gate for just TRYING, it was for a purpose and I need to remember and trust it again!

In my opinion, videos are helpful, but books have ultimate impact on us as we all are somewhat habituated to learn from it. For subjects like engineering maths and digital, we can skip books. All the best.
