My gate 2017 rank is 803 and gate score 688 (General Category). As per last year cut off I've checked, it seems like I won't get any good IITs or NITs. I am pretty much disappointed and I am afraid I cannot take one more year gap again. I am pretty much struggling with some of the concepts which I've prepared last year in regaining. Is there any hope to any good college or atleast any of the new IITs which might be good (and even I've heard new IITs are not good for mtech). Is there any point in continuing or it would be better looking for new job with my industrial experience (worked in a startup for 2 years i.e resigned last year). Kindly give me your suggestion as I am finding myself confused in proceeding further as I understand my current, But some way to make up with the one year gap I took.

You can apply for research in IIT's don't loose hope coming this far, If you have financial problem then take job, because it is very difficult to get into IBM, Amazon which many people dream, don't go for startup you will learn but you will never be happy (not everyone regret but majority). Try for MS in IIT madras. Try for spot rounds, If you have filled IIIT H form then go for it still 25 days to prepare, gather your focus its an tough face as well as an pressure test, which will keep on coming, if you are unable to read, then there are plenty of question on gate overflow which are unanswered try to solve them it will be best revision, If filled form for ISI then prepare for it, 688 is not an easy score to achieve you have potential you just need more focus. Think positive good things will happen

As I understand, you have two options, If you want to go to IIT,  I will explain positively both of them with whatever understanding I have.

1) Take a job and keep preparing for GATE

The only positive thing is that My brother used to say that do not try very very hard anything. He says if you look something very close then it becomes blurry. So keeping things at appropriate distance and priority, is very important.

Getting a job will definitely loosen the heat, which you have currently. One more benefit is that you will understand that without IIT, there is no life, then you will start preparing with more interest and concentration.

But there is only one disadvantage is that, if you start enjoying your job, or you feel comfortable then forget about IIT. You keep adjusting, feeling like "Ye bhi to thik hi hai". Then IIT dream will be transfer to your son. :D :D

2) Leave that startup job too and prepare full time again with more focus

Start once again this time, more seriously, with defined aim and focus. You have 800 Rank, you deserve better. If you have belongs to any reserved category then you would have got interviews call from all the IIT for at least for MS.

Do not loose the patience, you deserve to be in IIT. It's just a matter of 4*2 Marks questions. If you quit only for 4 questions, then you may never forgive yourself in the coming 40 years of your life. It seems very difficult putting one more year, but believe me, the next 40 will be legendary. Believe.
