The terms top- down and bottom-up refer to the order in which the parse trees are constructed. In the top-down parsing method, construction starts at the roots and proceeds towards the leaves, while, in bottom- up parsing construction starts at the leaves and proceeds towards the root.

You can read it in greater detail from the book Aho ullman of compilers.
