As first and last position is fixed , we can only manipulate the middle 6 positions

We have 6 positions and 6 letters left ( E , C , U , L , I , A )

So, we have $^6P_6$ (as we have to select & then arrange) or 6! or 720 different ways to fill the middle 6 places

∴ 720 different words can be formed out of the letters of the word "PECULIAR"  beginning with P and ending with R.
