The word stalemate is generally used in chess.

Suppose A and B are playing chess.

Now,assume A is not in check but cannot give any other move except into check. That is A cannot make progress in the game.

This situation of A is called stalemate.

This word is similar to the word deadlock.

Deadlock means a situation where no progress can be made.

So, option C will be the correct answer.

No, when mate is at last it doesn't have to be related to chess .

The suffix mate is used to mean companions

Like table-mates,classmate,roommate,soulmate, etc.

Only two words are there which end with mate and related to chess

They are stalemate and checkmate.

• The most appropriate synonym would be "deadlock"; actually, we can use "dead-end" also in the place of stalemate.

why not dead end?

If you Google for Synonyms of Stalemate, You will find Dead-End as one of the synonyms. But it's just that Deadlock is more close to the situation than Dead-End. People might disagree. That's why I don't like Verbal Ability. 

Speaking English and Giving a English test are way too different things.
