A farmer divided his herd of cows among his four sons. He gave one son half of the herd; second son one-fourth of the herd; third son one-fifth of the herd; and the fourth song 48 cows. How many cows were there in the hers originally?

Let the total cows be x.

Acc to question:

0.5x + 0.25x + 0.2x + 48 = x

This gives, 0.05x = 48 implying x is 48/0.05 = 960.
