BUGS in the Virtual Calculator for GATE 2016

Question

There are may be BUGS in the GATE Calculator if you spot any please help other to get aware of them too.

very small amount for them to implement these. World leading country in IT :)

@Amar: I agree that they could have done a better job, or atleast given the task to a better company than TCS. However, an onscreen calculator is much better than the alternative of each applicant bringing in his own calculator. The reasons:

• You  can't cheat. One could disguise a hand held programmable calculator as a standard one. It is so easy that it is scary. With a programmable calculator properly programmed, you could send in a 10 year old and have him get <500 AIR.
• It is fair. Everyone has the same calculator. With hand held calculators, a sufficiently wealthy kid could get a top of the line Casio fx-991 ES, while an average person can only afford a 81 MS. Some hardworking but financially unfortunate students don't have the luxury of using a calculator.
• The chances of your calculator misfunctioning get reduced. What if your calculator's battery dies down on the final day? Or if it gets spoiled due to rains? Not everyone can afford to arrive at the examination center in a car to be able to keep his calculator protected.

But hey, all that stuff doesn't apply to you, right? Feeling cheated. Don't worry.. here's what you gain:

• Only a handful of people will try to figure out how that calculator works before the actual exam (including many good students). So, if you familiarize yourself with it before the exam, you have a big advantage.
• If the calculator misfunctions/is really counter-intuitive for some set of calculations, the majority of the students will get the wrong answer, and then GATE will have to award marks to all. So, you probably won't lose marks because the calculator is shit.

it's not a bug. it's a feature :)

the calc has been out for a long time now.

this is called resistance to change :)

if there are more bugs, please post them. would be very helpful.

In this calc 13⁹⁹ mod 17 giving 3, in exam it gave 12 but the correct answer is 4.

I got 3 during the exam . 2 marks does make a lot of difference in the rank  :(

Yes, many suffered because of this. It fails to tell if there is an overflow, I guess.
