The given question is followed by two statements; select the most appropriate option that solves the
question.
Capacity of a solution tank $A$ is $\text{70%}$ of the capacity of tank $B$. How many gallons of solution are in
tank $A$ and tank $B$?
Statements:

  1.  Tank $A$ is $\text{80%}$ full and tank $B$ is $\text{40%}$ full.
  2. Tank $A$ if full contains $14,000$ gallons of solution.

  1. Statement I alone is sufficient.
  2.  Statement II alone is sufficient.
  3. Either statement I or II alone is sufficient.
  4.  Both the statements I and II together are sufficient.

Statement 1 gives the relative filling of the $2$ tanks.

Statement 2 gives the capacity of Tank A.

And since we have the relative capacities of the two tanks with both statements we can get the current amount of solution in them. And both the statements are necessary.

Correct Option: D

Let the capacity of tank B is x gallons.

Then capacity of tank A is 0.7x gallons.

Consider statement 2:

"Tank A if full has 14000 gallons". i.e capacity of tank A is 14000 gallons.

So 0.7x=14000 . This means that x= 20,000  gallons.

Therefore capacity of B is 20,000 gallons..

This statement would've been enough if they asked for capacities of tanks. But since they asked for amount of solution present in tank, we have to calculate further.

Consider statement 1:

"Tank A is 80% full and tank B is 40% full."

This means that tank  A  has 0.8*14,000 gallons and tank B has 0.4*20,000 gallons which  are required.

Hence both the statements  together are needed.

Let the total capacity of B be x

A=>0.7x   B=>x

According to statement 1--->

     A is 80% full i.e A=>0.8*0.7x=0.56x

     B is 40 % full i.e. B=>0.4x

after statement 1 both A & B have  variable x whose value is given in statement 2 i.e. x=14000

So, both statements together are necessary

SO, answer is (D)
