Gate 2021 set 1 paper discussion

Guys, there is no post regarding the gate 2021 set 1. So i thought of creating one.

So guys start commenting and share your experience regarding the gate 2021 set 1.

I am an ECE graduate gave GATE CSE 2021. This was my second attempt, in gate 2020 CSE i got 1645 rank and 52 marks.

My experience:I was in set 1 and felt paper was a little lengthy just because of the MSQ's .i saw set 2 analysis also, it was moderate and not that tough as some people are saying,  questions were doable but yes, 100% agree  that paper for set 2 was very very lengthy.But people are comparing it with 2006 paper and that's really wrong. Anyone who has practiced gate ques from 2006 knows that how tough 2006 gate paper questions were.

I personally feel set 2 was tougher overall than set 1 but not to the extent these online discussions are talking about.

how much are you guys expecting ???

The grass is always greener on the other side bro.

What's the use of giving moderate questions only if you are unable to attempt them in the given time. I have seen paper 1 and yes questions were doable and rather most importantly making sense. I will personally advice you to go through the maths section of paper 2. Not a single question was there which can be made within 3-4 minutes leaving one standard deviation one.

Solving paper at home and solving in the actual exam are two different things. Psychology and state of mind plays major factor, no doubt. But I don't know why experienced people who were working constantly for 1.5 years are saying that they are not even to clear the cutoff.

Lots of dreams got scattered, but amidst all these mess, lots of students will get good marks too. Just hoping IIT Bombay will do justice in normalisation with average students like me who were expecting 50-55 overall.

And one more thing, shuffling was not the only thing done in the paper, all the one mark questions were rather confusing and lengthy in comparison to those of two marks ones. So it was also a major twist I faced during exam.

@vishal yes!!! i agree with you the math part was really lengthy in set 2 ,but  set 1  also had some lengthy questions which i could have done if time permitted. I gave a lot of tests and gate paper also as a mock but never faced time issues may be because there were no quality MSQ's in so called "great" ME test series. In MSQ's it took a lot of time checking each and every option(13-14 😪)MSQ's were there.

Lets hope Marks vs rank is better this time than gate 2020 ,cause in gate 2020 for 50-55 marks we will not even get under 1000 rank.

I too gave set 1 paper, and I felt that most of the questions were doable, keeping in mind that I have prepared really well and I had also attempted an abundant amount of PY papers and Multiple test series too and I was mostly scoring 70+ in them.

But I would also agree to the fact that Set 1 paper was not as compared to 2019 or 2020 paper. Few questions were really tricky, and they required more than 3-4 minutes even for someone with proper knowledge of concepts. I haven't seen the Set 2 paper, so can't comment on that. But in my mocks, I was used to attempt 62-63 questions, but due to good quality questions and exam pressure, I was only able to attempt 57 questions in actual Gate(note that after coming home I found that I could have solved 2-3 more questions if I was confident enough).

Now the most tricky part was inclusion of MSQs, there were so many tricky MSQs of OS and CN in set 1, so my accuracy would surely be affected by that.

Now I just hope that I didn't lose much marks in incorrect attempts and able to fetch atleast 62-65 marks. And hope to achieve slightly better rank than last year equivalent to 65 marks.

Honestly, I felt question paper was on the easier side of things, I skipped a total of 6 questions, all of which were 2 marks. In retrospect I wish my accuracy could be better, I hadn't attempted any mock test and I glossed over the questions carelessly which cost me a few(silly mistakes like binary tree search time although, I still am not sure what the answer is, O(N) if the elements weren't distinct and used <= to defer left or right side(left skewed), it's been bugging me a lot even now). Had I attempted any tests and had my anxiety under control things may have been different maybe for the better I presume.

On the bright side of things, I got most the questions right, the questions which were discussed(3 lost... the above one inclusive). Then again, we do remember the questions which were too easy for us to do.

I wish to get whatever I feel off my chest, I had given all I had yet... I feel so restless, pathetic maybe. It's like a horror movie where the ghost just died with 30 minutes left on the runtime. Don't even know what to expect.

Anyway, I honestly wish the guys who sacrificed themselves in the pandemic to get what they deserve.

@kanwae it means you attempted around 58 questions and just 3 incorrect. This is really good, you have a really good chancea of getting 70+.

Also gate applied has uploaded a pdf it contains 64/65 questions so you can go check more of your answers there.

@Animesh yes, some CN ques were tricky for me specially the MSQ's. Also this time GATE didn't give any of congestion control and IP addressing questions, which were asked each year.

Yes, applied Gate memory based for set 1 is really good. It has all correct questions.

Yeah, this year the paper was not really trivial. I think this year people with just 60 marks could expect a rank of less than 250-270. But I can be completely wrong too. Let's see what happens.

Lol How wrong I was..... It's perfect.
I believe I'm getting 60+ if I'm brutally honest with myself discounting negative marks, using 1 mark for unknown marks for some questions and some whose answers I totally forgot which are 0. There will be always something which spoils the end.

@kanwae..Thanks for the kind words.yah i cannot calculate the exact marks cause i don't clearly remember which questions were of 2 marks and 1 marks ,but some of  the  MSQ's i marked are wrong .Lets hope for the best. Within 3-4 days response sheet will come and everything will be clear.

I attempted 62 questions and made Silly Mistake, 14-15 approximate. smh I'll probably score between 60-65. To be brutally honest, 70+ was very achievable in the first set, and I wouldn't be surprised if the topper scored 90+. IDK what my final rank would be, but it should be good enough to get me call from IITB RA and IITM MS I think. Just going to start preparing for them gradually. All the best to everyone else too!

@Ashutosh, I think it was more or less the same. The only reason why we can even compare with last year's paper is due to the excessive MSQ. even if you know the theory you can screw them up very easily ( I did :/). You could say it was 5% harder than 2020 because of this reason.

@Aman yes i agree but their is a huge different in marks vs rank

for ex in gate 2020 for 68-69 marks your rank will be 150-200.

but in gate 2018 for  68-69 marks your are in top 50-60

@keshav after coming home and seeing the ques every paper seems easy. This happened to me in GATE 2020 after analyzing the paper i was sure that most of the ques were easy and one can easily score 65-70 if he/she has knowledge of basics.But to solve that paper in exam pressure in those 3 hrs make it difficult.

@ashutosh but any how paper one guy must have to score above 70 because after normalisation it will eventually drop to 65 so not getting marks in first paper will not help in fetching rank

MY EXPERIENCE :

i too gave paper 1 and when i finished those 3 hour , i said to my self this paper is definitely tricky and lengthy (coz of msq and jumbled question and few 1 marks was not really  1 mark level ) than previous year gate paper , i have attempted many gate paper and applied tests as mocks and scored almost 65-70+ in most of them , Definitely i feel this year we can see huge marks vs rank difference this year (gut feeling ). 
paper was definitely doable if one was prepared well . i had this pattern of attempting 2 marks first and then 1 mark then aptitude and complete 1 round of paper in 90 mins, and while attempting 1 marks  questions i alwys solved them in a continous flow as they are easy (theory and formula based) but in exam doing question serial wise i was seeing that many 1 marks question was not direct but requre deep understanding which is required in 2 marks and ohhh man MSQ was butt cracker even if i knew the answer just because it was msq i spent 2 minutes more on it. expecting marks in 60 range GIVEN  IF my incorrect attempt is less which is rare coz in mock i used to have incorrect atttempts of 10-12 question now this paper god knows how many have i made incorrrect i attempted 56 question in total .

I think that should be both. I mean am not sure, but that's what I have figured out in the exam, and I have attempted 'both'. But Applied gate are giving some other answer, so I am not sure 100%.

I think you missed that thing that it correctly tells about type of expression checking. For variable type it was correct but not for expression type

I used to get 65+ in most of the mocks. But due to silly mistakes and tricky msq, now I am getting 55 marks only.

With normalization marks will further reduced. 😥

Don't feel much dishearten. Wait till the actual results. Maybe normalisation doesn't have that much of an impact. All these speculations are just giving only one thing to us, that's tension.

So leave everything aside and hope that u don't lose much rank. And as this year the set 1 paper was also not that easy, you can get newer iits or good NIT at these marks.

@Animesh yes people are telling that set 2 was very difficult and thinking that set 1 was a cakewalk and speculating that too much marks will be increased for set 2 guys. But Set 1 was not a cake walk, questions were tricky specially MSQ's.

everyone is losing marks in the tricky msqs.And i  am witnessing most of the people who were scoring 65+ in tests have fallen to 55 coz of msqs ..so its very hard to predict something ri8 now

I really wish (at least from next time onwards) each paper to be conducted in single set. So that students would be judged fairly. 

Not sure why IIT professors believe normalization can do justice. More often real life data is not uniform in nature.

Guys all I can say is there's always an another venue to explore, getting into IITs is just one of the ways but it isn't the only to move-ahead in life.

Maybe start exploring opportunities abroad... I heard about people doing masters in Germany even from low-tier colleges with little to no reputation. Canada, Australia and Nordic countries are well-suited I believe, take it with a pinch of salt and research on your own before doing something rash.

Remember to always try and distinguish yourself from the rest. I had already applied for JEST in case GATE doesn't work out well, the deadline is extended up to 19th FEB. Apply if you already have doubts about getting good marks.

To be fair I think it was on the easier side of things, I had solved most PYQ which is why I can say it to-be simple especially database, algorithms, and networks. No need to mention COCA imagine them asking DMA questions that are NAT or pipelining that's to-be solved with bogus assumptions.

I didn't attend even a single mock-test which in retrospect was the biggest blunder I did in my side of preparation. Even though, I would in no way say it was tough with regards to the difficulty of questions.

I presume for most it's simply the anxiety aspect of the MSQs (or else it's just me) that made all the problems coupled with no clear set-of strategies and pandemic times.

I feel the same for set 1 just because of huge number of MSQs. No doubt set 2 seems more difficult and lengthy to score above 70, but set was also not that easy, as most of us are losing marks in almost all MSQ questions. So i think a mark of 67-68 would be really good in set 1 too. But these are my speculations, let's wait till Praggy's app gets live.
