I had applied for the Systems pool. Before the interview, we were asked to select two background subjects and I chose Computer Architecture and Operating Systems. Along with that, we also had to choose a couple of research areas which I don’t remember (and it didn’t really make a difference either in the interview.)

My interview was taken by four professors - Prof Arka, Prof Govind, Prof Uday and Prof Gopinath.

I don’t remember the answers that I gave, but here are the questions that I was asked:

1. What is atomicity? Why do we need it?
2. Can you implement a lock with TestAndSet?
3. Can you implement the lock and unlock functions as well?
4. What is multithreading? How does it work?
5. Suppose I have a single core - does multithreading still help? There is one core, one processor - can multithreading still give an advantage?6. What is TLB? How many levels of
TLB are usually present?
7. Walk me through the entire process of what happens when we issue a Load/Store instruction.

I mentioned virtual addresses somewhere in the answer.

8. What is a virtual address? What is the difference between virtual and physical?
9. Do you access a cache with virtual address or physical address? Are there any pros and cons of each?
10. What if I force you to use virtual addresses to access the cache?

He kept saying good good in between, so that helped me realise that I was somewhat on the right track. Then Prof Govind said let’s move to DSA now, which I was and am horrible at.

1. Find the inorder successor in a binary search tree.
2. Find the height of a binary tree.

They didn’t want the overall idea, but proper, working code of the two. I stumbled in the first one and was able to come up with only the naive approach, I solved the second one properly.

I mentioned to them in between that sir you haven’t asked a lot from Arch, and they went “Yeah we know you know that, we want to see if you can code or not.”

Then came Uday sir:

1. You have an array, find two numbers with sum up to a given value X and report the indices.

I told them the naive one which was n^2, and then the nlogn one which involved sorting. They asked me to keep optimising it further and I said I think we can further optimise it by using a hash table. He said okay, now write proper, functional code for the same - not just the overall idea or pseudocode, but proper functional code with all the function calls and stuff.

I told him that this will take O(n) but then he said that’s fine, I want to know the constant as well. So, there was a lot of to and forth on this topic  My high-level idea was correct, but it didn’t translate to proper, functional code at all. Then he asked me the average-case complexity for the same and it ended there.

Overall, my DSA section was a hot mess.

Then came the slightly out of the box part.

Prof Gopinath, who was silent all this while, started asking.

He was like, okay, how can an operating system be designed to consume less power?

I was like but OS is a software thingy sir, without hardware support it'll be difficult and threw in a couple of more ideas that maybe if the processor detects it's heating, it can send an interrupt to the CPU or something like that. He then asked me, “have you heard about DVFS?”

I hadn’t and was about to guess it was something related to file systems (since Prof Gopinath has a lot of work in storage lol) but I didn’t and said no I haven’t. Then there was some to and forth and whatever idea I put across, he seemed to shoot it down.

And that’s it, that was the end of the interview. It lasted around 55 minutes and was on Teams. They finally selected three people in the Systems pool, and I was informed that I was at the top of the list.

Hi all, I have had a very nominal performance in GATE 2021, current GATE score is ~740. I can’t afford a year-drop, so I started researching contingencies to MTech degrees at top IITs and IISc. Coincidentally I stumbled up these MS/MTech (Research) degrees. These are much more research-centric programmes offered by most IITs/IISc. I have made the following findings as of yet –

IISc – MTech by Research in CSA. Details – https://www.csa.iisc.ac.in/academics/academics-prospectivestudents-regular.php

IIT Madras – MS. Details – http://www.cse.iitm.ac.in/docs/ms-criteria.pdf

IIT Hyderabad – 3 years MTech. Details – https://iith.ac.in/academics/post-graduate/

I am opening this thread of discussion for like-minded people to put in your inputs, so that we can all benefit from each other. I will also be putting in my inputs as and when I stumble upon new insights.

P.S – IIT M and IIT H seem to allow BTech graduates from all streams, but IISc allows students from Computer Science/Engineering, Electronics/Electrical Communication, Information Science/Technology background only. This is a sad news for me, as I am a Mechanical Engineering graduate.

Round 1(Technical) She asked me to introduce myself and tell about me. I told her the truth that I am Machine Learning enthusiast so she can ask anything in Python, ML, DL but I know only basics of C and never worked in C++ and know Java too. Then also told her that I don't do CP much. Then she asked me that at least I know the basics of programming and then she asked me two questions. Question 1(Coding) Given a number write a function to tell whether that number is the power of 2 or not and told to write the code in C, not in python, which I easily explained her. Question 2(Coding) Given an array which is sorted but rotated some number of times and a number write an efficient code which will tell whether that number is part of that array or not. Since I had used binary search in my solution she also asked me to write the code of binary search in my favorite language and then she asked me questions related to complexity theory and then also asked me to write the code for Quick Sort, where I struggled sometimes but she was very helpful even she explained to me the whole concept of quick sort with an example although I know it theoretically. The time period of this round was around 25-30 minutes. Because since I had a lot of projects in ML so I myself spoke about 15 minutes, telling about projects and she also asked why this algorithm why not others and so on... then she asked me all the above question.

Round 2(Managerial) This was a little tough round for me because I told a lie in this round which was one of the biggest blunder done by me, though I was selected(God saved me). The manager saw my resume and was making some weird faces and told that his department currently not working in AI/ML/DL or fields which I mentioned in my resume and asked a tough one that why I should hire you if my department is not working in your area of interest. He even told that it will be a waste of my time as well as their money if Cisco will hire me. I thought that this was just a question to irritate me to check my patience level or to see how I will respond in pressure situation but I am so much passionate about AI, I cannot handle a situation who speaks against AI. So being calm at that time I counter questioned him which he was not able to give the exact answer which he wanted to give and just changed the topic and was trying to catch me in further conversation. I replied to him by countering that, as I had attended the ppt in that morning, all the spokesperson were telling that CISCO is working in the field of AI/ML/DL then why you are telling that CISCO is not working in this field and you are not interested in me. He then told me that though CISCO is working in AI/ML/DL, but his department is not working in AI. Then again countered him that as before one year I don't know anything about AI/ML/DL but now I know it very well and did an internship in IISC and one work from home internship also during same summer. So as there is one more year before I will join CISCO so I can learn that also. After this answer he appreciated me, but still he was not that much satisfied and asked one question that I might have given some interviews before then why CISCO but here comes the twist, before he asked me this question complete I just replied in middle that this is my first company which I had applied(which was lie) and I'm interested in CISCO then he countered me telling that this shows that you have been following for quite a long which I replied yes(a lie) then he asked me to tell the name of CEO of CISCO(Wick Robbins) which I was not able to tell. Then he told me to be careful about my answers and told me to wait for some time so further, which shows that he was satisfied with my interview. This interview was about 20-25 minutes long. Round 3(Technical) Two interviewers were taking this round. They first asked me to introduce myself but in the meantime, the electricity went off as the weather was not good at that time, it was raining heavily. I thought this is the time where I can make an impact by telling about all my projects and other things. I spoke about 5 minutes as soon as electricity came back they start asking me a question about dsa and puzzle question. As I mentioned that I love cricket and captained it when I was playing for the district from my school. They ask me about who is my favourite cricketer(MS Dhoni) and whether I am bowler or all-rounder or batsmen some other questions regarding cricket. Then they came to the main questions they asked me 3 questions. Questions 1 Given a number can you write a code in your favourite language which swaps adjacent nibble(four bits consecutively). I did that but my solution was not optimized, they asked me to optimize it more. Then after thinking sometime, they told that they had already given some hint while conversation only. Then I remind what can be the hint, actually before starting the question they asked whether I know operators or not and this was hint itself. I solved my question using 'or' and 'xor' operator which was taking the same time complexity as before but space complexity was drastically decreased. They were asking me to tell the time and space complexity of all my algorithms. They were satisfied with my solution. Question 2(Puzzle) Suppose there is a car having four new wheels and one Stepney which is having a new wheel too. So can you tell how much KM can a car run if each wheel can be for max 20,000 km? I was going in the correct direction but my calculation was a little bit wrong. They even encouraged me that I'm going in the right direction but I'm missing at one point. But I was not able to find the exact solution and as they were getting late they just asked a new question. Question 3(Coding) Given a string, write efficient code to count the frequency of each character in that string. I explained them method 1 but they asked me to make my algorithm more efficient which I was able to do and it was the last question.

I : He asked one term related to normal distribution and then same term for binomial distribution

Me: I don’t know sir

Other professor asked one question in OS related to virtual memory

I2: Given logical address is 4MB and page table size is 4KB what is PTE size
Me: I was not sure whether this question is correct or not because we need physical address space. While solving question he asked me questions related to what I am doing on paper like what we will get if we divide logical address space by page table size.

(If anyone can help me the above question please comment )

I3: What have you done in Machine Learning, tell me about your experience like what projects you have done
Me: I told them that I have done a ML course by Andrew Ng and I have tried some kaggle competition by learning from various blogs etc.
I also told him that I read a paper by Pro. Kalidas Yatru on Image Processing

This is coming from a 2020 B.Tech CSE graduate who wrote GATE.

I had the opportunity to sit for IIT Madras MS interview during the unprecedented corona times. So I attended the interview online over a Google Meet link.

There were around 5-6 panelists. However, only 3 of them took my interview. The first professor very politely asked for my introduction.

Q1) Tell me something about yourself.
A1) Name, College, Subject interests etc.

He being a Bengali himself and knowing that I did my graduation in Bengal, asked if I understood Bengali!

Then he went on to handle the process to another professor. The next phase was Programming Assignment in C/C++. I was first asked to write a code that returned kth element from the start of the Linked List on a shared document. I only had to complete a function. There were no formalities like compiling the code although the function had to be completed with proper syntax in C. The same had to be modified then to return kth element from the end of the Linked List.

After the programming test, I was asked the subject of interest for the next phase. I was comfortable with Data Structures and Algorithms so told them so.

The third professor asked questions from the subtopic - Stacks and Queues. Initially, I was expected to give their definitions and other properties. He then went on to ask me about the implementation details of a queue using stack and vice versa. This question really got confusing as the professor wanted me to optimise the implementation and do minimum movements.

The interview ended at a very good note as all the interviewers were helpful and polite. They assisted me whenever I got stuck at a use case or so.

Verdict - Selected
