I know this is not a big achievement but i feel , the journey i went through or the mistakes I did is worth knowing for future GATE aspirants so that they nail the exam with flying colors .

I would never recommend any aspirant to change their stream in GATE unless there is a very strong reason .

I recently had an interview with GO classes ( GateOverflow ) where  I have shared my entire journey .

I will attach the link herewith.

My favorite quote- “ The more you sweat in practice , the less you bleed in battle “

"Nothing in life that is worthy is ever hard to  acheive if you have the courage to try and have the faith to beileve"  Wilma Rudolph  one of the most influential women in sports was diagonosed with POLIO at the age of 4 this affected her legshe had wear brace on her left leg, doctors told her that she would never be able to walk normally again, fortunately that a wilma had a mother who  said to her that all she need to do is to have faith ..if you have faith god will make it happen she said ....

she entered every race and in every race she came in last, people begged her in the name of pity to quit but she did not, and there came a day when she won the race and from then on she won the evry race that she ran,,,,,,,she became the first american woman to win 3 GOLD MEDALS at single OLYMPLIC GAME...wilma broke many barrier's of disbelief and overcome many unreachable obstacles..they say faith can move mountains..wilma personified it...FAITH ....is force that is greater than any knowledge, power or skill and many defeats turn into trial if you trust into god's impartial will...faith has no limit it is boundless provided you have the intense desire...once lord krishna and arjuna were walking together..during mahabharta...lord krishna was watching the bird in the sky..and he asked arjuna,,,is that a dove..arjuna answered yes lord it is a dove...lord krishna then said may be it is an eagle...arjuna replied yes it is an eagle but arjuna it looks  crow to me said lord krishna...
arjuna again agreed by saying...yes indeed it is a crow my lord..being amused by this..lord krishna asked the arjuna why he conquered the every word he said..
and what arjuna replied was indeed a remarkable sign of discipleship..arjuna said lord  your words are far more important then..what my own eyes sees..he has faith in his master..our senses have limited capacity but faith shows us the limit less.. faith see's the invisible, beileves  the incredible and recieves the impossible...god says faith should be like mountain which can not be moved by any person or circumstance...
god didn't promised days without pain ,laughter without sorrow,,,or sun without rain but he did promised strength for the day...comfort for the tears..and light for the way ...
we may have heard of various stories in history...where disciples proved there faith...lets take the pledge....we will reach to such heights that generations to come will speak up..we will be living example ....rather example..of immovable, unmatchable, insormountable faith..bcoz faith is the mover of mountain ...there is nothing that god cannot do..so start out today with faith in heart ..and climb until your dream comes true...

All the best for GATE 2019. I’m sure all the hardworking people here will be smiling after GATE. Questions being tough or easy is irrelevant as it is a competitive exam and you only care for rank (converted to GATE score). This will be the 5th GATE exam after GO was started and I’m pretty sure we will have the maximum toppers this year. Once again all the best 👍

Just a side note: things do not finish after GATE exam. Many of you will need to start interview preparation.

Please seniors and others who gone through this exam(such exam), guide us to tackle the exam. Tomorrow is the exam day.

For the last 15 days I am not able to concentrate properly. As a result my output has been reduced very much. I am wasting this precious time. Can you please suggest a few techniques to improve my concentration at this moment.

Hello All, I am getting 60.33 marks (general cat.) in gate 2019 cse. Expected rank -715-730. Score 711. As I know I have very less options for getting admissions in iit’s and my best option is iiitb. As I have low cgpa in btech (6.74) . I also has affected my chances of shortlisting in MS/RA interview in iit’s. Now I am feeling low as I can’t have much in my hand. Please suggest some good options for me to take admission.

Thanks.

A science teacher was talking a biology class . she brought two silk worm cocoons and told the students to observe how the silk worm gradually emerges from cocoon . she went out of the class room  for some time. the students were keenly watching the emergence of the silk worms from cocoons. it is a very slow and laborious process for silk worm to come out of cocoon.so the two worms were labouring to come out .one of the student took pity on them and though the others tried to prevent him, he went on slowly snap the strings of cocoon .he thought that he was making it easy for the silkworm.

at that movement ,the teacher returned to the class room and when she came to know about what had happened ,she asked all the students to keep observe for some more time . oddly ,the silkworm which was helped by the student died, and another one ,which went trough a lot trouble to come out of the cocoon was moving about actively.

the teacher then explained  to students how slow and painful it is for silkworms to come out of the cocoon . it takes lot of time for them to adjust to the conditions outside. as they keep snapping the silk threads that hold them back, their body gains strength and energy. but  this process takes a very long time and evokes pity in onlookers. even then,we should allow them to use their own strength, and trying to help them woulld put their lives in danger .the teacher then cited darwin's theory "survival of the fittest " to say that only the capable can survival in this world and seeking sympathy from others will only weaken us and destroy our self image.

life is not about sympathy _seeking or self pity.life is all about possessing a tenacious mind set to achieve success. they can conquer who believe they can.let us recollect our childhood  days . when we  were learning how to walk ,we fell down many a times.but dint we get up and walk again ?

if we had not tried to getup ,all of us would be crawling to day. in many sport games , the sport person get injured several times.but it is their commitment and determination that makes them come back successfully and become a  Tendulkar ,a p.t usha,a saina or marykom .let us not seek pity from others. let us empower ourselves. learn to put in our best and take every disappointment as a challenge .there  is no elevator or elevator   to success. there are only steps. start climbing them and don't back. any man of achievement is highly respected because of this  moral courage and hard work.the future beckons you. go and enjoy it.

remember:Life is like a rose. every rose has a thorn:but aren't the roses sweet?

with greater pain............................... comes greater  pleasure

I guess many of you will be tensed. But you should not be. GATE exam won't need tension or memory or anything other than presence of mind. It just checks what all you know. All you need to do is to answer the ones you know, ensure no silly mistakes, read and understand questions properly. If you have seen many previous GATE questions, you already know how questions can be twisted- there won't be more twists than those now. Some points:

1. Reading questions take time - do not rush to solve before doing this properly. Quite often answer becomes easy if we read the question properly or repeatedly.

2. For system subjects like CO, CN etc. where a big question desciption is given, never try to match that to a problem you already know. Rather apply the concepts you know based on the given problem description.

3. Pipelining is an important concept- not just in COA but also in Networks. Imagining how pipeline works helps.

4. Simple questions on probability will come - beware of conditional probability and avoid silly mistakes. Never try to map it to a solved problem and instead try solving fresh.

5. 100% accurate methos like Truth Table should be used more.

6. Options will be less- this is good as usually options brings less marks.

7. No guess work: well with 60% above numericals and no negative marks for them, I think you can safely put some numerical value for integer numerical questions even if you have no idea of the question (like simply putting value 4 in last year paper would have made 2-3 answers correct). But for theory subjects like Algorithms, TOC, with negative marks, never do any guess work as quite often intuition gets negative.

8. If you hae not understood decidability in TOC, just skip its problem in exam. It is just 2 marks maximum- you do not need to score 100. Same for any topic you skipped.

9. For many questions with options, even if you do not know answer, option elimination might work. Do this at end if you have enough time. Option elimination if done properly won't bring negatives.

10. Sometime aptitude might be tough- if so just be happy, because normalization will raise your marks then. For example, 2016-set 1 aptitude was real tough.  Some one with 6/15 could get to top 50 also.

11. I again say exam being easy/difficult is irrelevant. What matters is how you perform relative to others. So, for those who knows subjects difficult exam is always better.

Something personal

I do have some ranks in mind for some people every year. Quite often they are true and sometimes some people get lower ranks and some people gets better ranks. But these are really small matter for me, and what really matters is how well you have prepared which is already done. GATE is not the end- it is an entrance. Suppose you are good enough only to get to 10,000 rank and by chance you get to IISc., most probably you end up losing to others. Similarly, if you are good enough to be in top 100 but end up not so -- whatever you do, you have a real advantage. So, do not really stress for that "rank" now. Just show how good you are.

After exam

Many people think life ends after GATE. This is completely wrong even if you are in top 100. Many of you have been repeatedly teling here "after GATE, I'll contribute to the community etc.". But have you seen any previous year toppers doing that here? Of course some do- but not anywhere close to the level of aspirants like Habib. You might not know why but having been in their shoes I can understand their stress and situation while doing Masters and I had never expected them to do so. That is the fact, qualifying GATE with top rank is not the end of life- it is only the start.

So, after exam you can discuss the answers or stop thinking about it. I have no comment on either. But important fact is unless you are getting to top 100, interview preparation matters. If you see last year blogs you can see how some people mastered this - they basically cleared all possible interviews. In the interview basic skills, subject knowledge all matters. But preparation is different from GATE - breadth can be very less, and depth needs to be more. Being in High Performance Area, I shall provide some insights in to this area- which will be useful for those interested in systems. "Interested" is not something you might understand now- so I shall also try to make this clear. So, the thing is take GATE as a step- not as an end. It is never the end for good or bad.

Best of Luck

Thank you everyone who has responded in https://gateoverflow.in/blog/7367/what-to-do-and-scared-for-future .

especially @mehul vaidya. For you advice. As of now I am preparing for BARC , IIIT-H, ISI ,CMI, VITMEE , Manipal and BITSAT. I am confirmed to get in VIT and Manipal and i will try for them again. In advance I would like to know about M.Tech in VIT or Manipal. Are they good for my career and health (I have heard some bad things about VIT). Also if any suggestion for preparing for IIIT-H and BARC will be very helpful.

Although I have no hopes for getting in NIT or IIT I would like to know how to prepare for the tests and interviews in IIT/NIT for M.Tech. Any and every tio will be helpful

Thank you everyone.

Once a student called Einstein over the phone and asked, “Sir, I need your guidance in one of my subjects. When can I come and meet you?”

Einstein: Tomorrow evening at 5:00.

Student: Thank you Sir!

Einstein: But do you know, what is the meaning of 5:00 pm?

Student: Yes Sir! 4 O'clock 59 Minutes and 60 Seconds.

Perhaps, very few of us own such level of intelligence. That's why we are always found complaining– 'We don't have time... It seems as if time has wings...' But, to tell you the truth, if you look at the hands of a clock steadily without intermission for 5 minutes, and if you observe its movement by each second, you will experience that even the time of five minutes is quite a bit.

Meaning, you don't keep count only for hours and minutes. Instead, pay attention to every single second. Utilise it intelligently with utmost care. For each second has its own value. It is matchless and precious. In this context, someone has beautifully expressed that to know the importance of–

One year– Ask the student who has failed the examination.

One month– Ask the mother who delivered a baby a month before.

One week– Ask the editor of a weekly magazine.

One day– Ask the worker working on daily wages.

One minute– Ask the one who missed the train.

One second– Ask the one who was saved providentially in an accident.

One thousandth of a second (i.e. one millisecond)– Ask the Olympic athlete who lost the gold medal.

Therefore, take care of each second; the hours will take care of themselves....don't waste ur time in useless  things

This is a famous quote by Henry Thoreau, which carries an enlightening message. To unveil that message, let's first try to contemplate on a very significant and vital question– “What truly is success?” For a dull and dim-witted student, making just 33% marks defines success. While, for a bright and intelligent one, a score of even 90% fails to satisfy the definition of success if his competitor has got 95%! For a pauper, receiving plain and simple food twice a day enough to keep him alive is a success. Whereas, for a millionaire, throwing a luxurious party to his friends and relatives with all probable delicacies in a seven star hotel may fail to meet the parameter of success! As each one of us is so very different in our choices, weaknesses, habits and so on, then how can we set one destination point as a victory mark for all? So, the query remains– 'How to define success in the true sense?'true success'– 'Success means to be the best you can be, the finest you can grow according to your own potentialities.'

However, this definition is not adequate to deduce the complete meaning of success. To understand the term in toto, let's know the prime requisites for success:

HAVE A DEFINED GOAL, A CLEAR VISION

Helen Keller was indeed a distinctive personality. She was blind, dumb and deaf. Yet, she made commendable achievements in her life. Once someone asked her– “Ma'am, what do you think could be worse than being born blind?” In a split second she replied– “To have sight but no vision!” If you go through the autobiographies of great achievers, you will find them saying in unison that the propelling force in their life was– a goal, a dream, a mission, a target, a purpose– something that always kept them motivated. If you don't have a goal in your life, you are never going to achieve what you could have achieved. When Robert Kennedy was assassinated, many of his writings were published in the newspaper. In one of them, he had remarkably quoted– “Some people look at things as they are and say, why? Some people look at things as they could be and say, wow, why not I?” That's the distinguishing feature in the attitude of a successful man. He looks at the possibilities and steers those possibilities in the direction of his goal.

Now, the next question which crops up in this perspective is– What type of goal should one choose for his life? While selecting the mission of our life, many a times we commit an error. Once, a farmer was teaching his son how to plough a straight furrow. He advised his child– "Son, locate a pointer in the front, focus on it and drive straight towards it." The son started very enthusiastically. But, unfortunately, instead of a straight furrow, it looked like a snake going crisscross all across the field. On seeing that, the farmer asked his son surprisingly– "Son, what did you focus on in front of you to decide the direction for ploughing?" The son innocently replied– "The horse in the front field, papa." We also sometimes keep wavering in our ambitions, as a result of which, we are unable to maintain a proper focus. Therefore, make sure that your goal is firm and fixed. Otherwise, you may land up in confusions and mess. Do you know how a lion, the king of forest, is tamed by circus-masters? A tamer deliberately uses a chair and keeps moving it, while facing the legs of the chair towards the lion. The lion attempts to attack the chair, but it fails. Reason being, it gets confused as to which of the four legs to attack first. It gets badly entangled in this mental confusion and becomes passive. Similarly, in order to avoid confusions as to what we should focus upon, we should choose one particular goal of our life. A single goal gives a sense of accomplishment, direction and motivation.

MAKE STRATEGIES, HAVE PROPER PLANNING

Someone has beautifully said– "If we fail to plan, then we plan to fail." Once, a passenger  was talking to the Captain of a huge ship, 'Queens Mary', during an ocean cruise. He asked the Captain– "How long would it take to stop this vessel?" The Captain thought and replied– "If I shut down all the engines right at this moment, it would take nearly a mile to completely stop this vessel." The passenger added instantly– "That means a good captain thinks at least a mile ahead."

In order to grab success, we need to think and plan before. We need to strategise our actions prior to their execution. Let's understand what does 'planning' mean. Planning means 'right decision' at 'right time'. In the wit's dictionary, there comes a word– 'Disillusion'. Do you know what it means? It means putting lots of effort and hard-work to climb to the top of the ladder only to discover that you made the ladder lean against the wrong wall! Therefore, proper planning is essential to reach the correct destination. Mathematically,

Wrong Decision at Wrong Time = Disaster;
Wrong Decision at Right Time = Mistake;
Right Decision at Wrong Time = Unacceptance; and
Right Decision at Right Time = Success.

Just see, how this formula for success works...

There was a boy who sold newspapers in a market. He had many competitors in his area of distribution, due to which he could sell only a few newspapers every day. One day, he reached the market earlier than others so that he could sell more newspapers. But, in half an hour, other boys also reached and he found that despite coming early, he could not earn much profit. He thought for a moment and realised that taking money and giving back change was a time consuming factor. The next morning, he reached the market at usual time, but with a changed strategy. He went to each of the stalls and dropped the newspaper. However, instead of waiting while distributing, he told everyone– “I will be back in a while to collect the money, Sir”. That day, he sold all his newspapers. Soon, he became the leading distributor of newspapers in that area. Certainly, his success was the result of the decision that he took at the right time in the right direction after contemplation.

MAKE SUPREME LORD YOUR COMPANION

In every facet of our life, we often feel the need to bracket together with a partner... A companion who is intelligent, quick at making right and wise decisions, source of immense energy and power! A friend, who never deceives us, never betrays us, who is never green-eyed with us! Someone, who can guide us and help us in accomplishing our goal of life! If we look around, we would definitely be unable to hunt for such an absolute personality, who encompasses all these traits. But, for sure, there exists one... He is none other than God, the Supreme Lord Himself. So, why not make God as our companion, who is the foundation of all these qualities, the source of all these traits, and above all who is eagerly waiting for us to extend a hand of friendship to Him. Believe it! Once He stands by us, we will experience an aroma of confidence around us.

God bears our responsibility and we simply proceed as His assistants. PERFECT MASTERS often recounts a very inspiring instance. It's a story of Saint Theresa. She had a dream to build an outstanding, magnificent temple of the Lord. She, therefore, went from door to door in order to collect donations. In one of the houses, when she rang the door-bell, a lady came out shouting angrily– "What do you want from me?" Theresa replied calmly– “Actually, I wish to erect a temple of the Lord. I am collecting donations for the same." The lady asked suspiciously– "How much will your temple cost?" Theresa replied– "Perhaps, millions of dollars." The lady looked at Theresa from head to toe and asked– "How much do you have right now?" Theresa very confidently replied– "I have two paise." The lady mocked– “Have you gone insane or are you daydreaming? It's easy to build castles in the air, but not temple on the ground. You have just two paise and…” Saint Theresa interrupted and said– "Ma'am, probably you are mistaken. I had not completed my statement when you asked me about my possessions. I have two paise plus 'God'...His bountiful grace with me." And it's recorded on the pages of history that Theresa succeeded in her mission! Of course, because God was her companion!

Our powers, our energies, our resources may be limited and insufficient to reach the heights of success. But, if we club our limited resources with His unlimited grace, no one can stop success from coming to us. So, choose Him as your companion, your best friend... not in words but practically. And, be among those fortunate ones who are remembered as successful personalities, for generations to come.
