IIT(ISM)- An Honest Opinion

Note: I will talk only about general rank range because for other categories, the stats are highly dynamic for each year and can’t be predicted.

Disclaimer: The opinions here are strictly mine and are based on times when ISM have abolished its own test and take only GATE qualified students, i.e., after becoming an IIT officially. I don’t belong to this institute anymore as I joined it on purpose with a state PSU job procedure going side by side just to be on safe side and be in an IIT  (everyone wants to be) and hence refrain from saying that I am glorifying my college because it is not mine now. Whatever mentioned here, good or bad, are true facts.

So, here it is:

Ideal for: General rank above 600 who:

  • Could not go to top 3 NITs (believe me to take ISM over NIT, Calicut. There is a huge gap between top 3 NITs (NIT T/W/S) and the 4th one).
  • Could not make it to IIT B RA due to average coding or other IIT D/K/M MS programs either due to interview rejection or lack of interest in MS.
  •  Could not get into IIIT H/B/D and BITS due to inability to crack their selection process or financial issues.

While some of the options above are really better than ISM, and some cannot be specifically mentioned as better or worse but all the options mentioned above are safe options in terms of reaping better future returns like placements and alumni base.

Academics:

The teaching here at ISM for CS is ordinary with only 3 professors in the department and the rest being assistant or associate. Don’t worry, all are PhDs though. But, for someone like me who studied B.Tech from a university (central) where even seeing professors in class was actually a rare event (forget about course completion), the teachers here at ISM seemed very good. They might not know the subjects in deep but they know what they are talking about in class. They are open to questions which they might or might not be sure to answer at the very moment but it happened several times with me, that after few days of raising question in the class, the professor did get back to me with a satisfactory answer on their own. So in short, knowing that they now teach at an IIT and not ISM, they do maintain some minimum standards. You want to do research in a field in which no one specializes in the department or participate in some event (like ACM); you will still find someone in the department who will be ready to be your guide. So, they all might not be as knowledgeable as you would imagine professors of an IIT to be, but they won’t pull your legs if you’re trying. But yes, having said that remember this is India. You can’t openly be mean to someone in power. Maintaining amiable relations with professors are necessary. Annoying them can be problematic but if you take it this way that even though they are not much knowledgeable, they are still knowledgeable and can at least teach you what you don’t want to end up as in your life. :P

There is a dearth of professors in the department and now being an IIT, the recruitment just got tougher. But recruitments are being done. So, you might not be able to choose any elective. Electives here are pre-decided like Machine Learning and Cryptography in my case. But, I don’t regret learning both. Having less choices can both be a bad or good thing. Again, don’t expect much from professors. They will only do the bare minimum for exams. But if you really put your own efforts and then knock their doors, they will never deny help (at least this happened to me).

Opportunities:

ISM is a premier institute for B.Tech as it takes student from JEE from more than 15 years or so. So, opportunities are in abundance because almost all opportunities that come for B.Tech are open to M.Tech as well. Conferences (national, international), chapters of IEEE and ACM are few examples. This is an area where ISM, being a really old premier institute, is way above new IITs.

Research:

This is one area which is changing for better after ISM being converted to an IIT. Now, it is compulsory to publish 1 paper each in 3rd and 4th semester. The numbers of papers being published has gone high after ISM being an IIT both from student and teacher’s end.

Placements:

As mentioned above, everything open for B.Tech is open to M.Tech. All major giants come for hiring here to campus along with the regular ones and startups. With ISM being converted to an IIT, the package offered by companies have gone up. The past trends of placements in M.Tech here at ISM have been erratic and the blame is only on the students. There are alumni (of M.Tech) working at top notch companies while you can find some of them bad mouthing ISM on social media. The reason is that through its own test, ISM used to admit a lot of GATE non-qualified students. How could you expect a non-GATE qualified candidate to fare well against JEE qualified ones or the one with no skill at competitive coding stand against the ones who have been coding since year 1? JEE is a lot tougher exam than GATE as it requires continuous efforts of 2 years or even more.  Everything is open, you should be equipped enough to claim what is yours.

The rule is simple- code and grab or sit and cry (or badmouth about ISM at social media). Within 10 days of my induction I had appeared for internships test for Flipkart, Amazon and Direct-i. Everyone was so busy about telling why not to join ISM last year at this time, no one told about these things. My advice is instead of asking questions on Facebook about which college to join and wasting time, code and study 3 subjects of your choice (preferably OS, C/DS, DBMS) these 2 months. Not only it will help in cracking MS/ RA/ BARC interviews but will let u grab internship opportunities. Just do your part and leave rest on the force that drives us all. :)

Many of my seniors are already placed with range of 7.5 LPA to 20 LPA (See, it all depends on your own abilities). Some of them are doing internships from major companies like Samsung, Siemens and startups. Now, around 20 of my batch-mates have already bagged full time intern opportunities. Around 15 of them have bagged interns at Intel and FYI, their average GATE rank was closer to 2000. So, while few were wasting time telling how bad the institute is and why juniors should not be joining it, some actually made their stay at ISM count.

Exams:

This is the easiest part here at ISM. Getting a 7 pointer is necessary for claiming MHRD stipend or you lose it for 1 whole semester. The rule is harsh but getting a 7 pointer is way easy here. The whole credit is divided into quizzes, assignments, 1 sessional and final exam. All you need to do is be regular and attend classes because all that is asked is taught or talked about in class. I got a 10 pointer in my 1st semester and all I did was attend class regularly. Again, instead of sleeping at the back benches or laughing how the professor plotted the log graph wrong the first time and avoiding classes thinking that the professor knows nothing, attend lectures with intent to learn. This will save your time from trying to gather notes and books and trying to understand the concepts on your own from standard text or Youtube videos a night before examination, which is never going to happen. Quizzes are for namesake, no one takes them except for one. Assignments are rare and mostly given before end semester exams. So, just 1 sessional and 1 end term exam and that too 80% from copy and 20% application based. What easier than this do you expect from an IIT? Just be regular and your pointers will fall into place.

Free time:

A lot, like literally a lot! Classes are in the second half. So, it is up to you that you want to waste your time sleeping or roaming or surfing mobile or you want to be at fully equipped labs open from 9 AM to 7 PM honing your coding skills or reading papers for your research or simply prepare for GATE. For some people, it is like IISc or old IITs or nothing. For those ISM is the place. Lots of free time, the course of 1st semester is a subset of GATE and stipend are all the plus points. Dropping full time is never easy. Some might even have financial issues and preparing with job in TCS/ Wipro is not that easy. My suggestion is to join a college where you at least get stipend so that you can manage your expenses. ISM is a much better option than lower or mid -level NITs for this purpose as it has better reputation, very low pressure of coursework and even if you fail to bag a rank to get into IISc or old IITs next year too, you will still pass out with IIT written on your degree. Believe me when I say low pressure of coursework because the coursework at all old IITs/ IISc and top 3 NITs (no idea about IIITs) is very much hectic with lots of assignments, quizzes and deadlines.

Infrastructure and Facilities:

Infrastructure is not something that you can build in a day. Again, new IITs do not stand a chance against ISM with these. ISM has every infrastructure whether for academics or recreation. It will be hosting Asia’s largest (or may be 2nd largest library) in a few days. The existing library is open from 9 AM to 11 PM (yes, right) and it is filled up to that time. The labs and workshops are all equipped and remain open to students till 7 PM. There are subscriptions to latest journals both offline and online. There are seminar, workshops and conferences by leading companies and under names of IEEE, ACM and CSE Society. There is one whole building for all kind of student clubs and sports. The clubs at ISM are really reputed ones and have proved their mettle at many places. There are awesome cultural and technical fests organized by departments and institute.

Government can build IITs but not ‘make’ one. An institute is as good as its students. Here at ISM, you can never be complacent if you have eyes opened and senses working because while being in M.Tech you copy paste codes from GeeksforGeeks, some guy in 2nd year might have made it to GSoc or ACM Asiads. There is so much to learn, but only if you want to. Everything is in here, all you have to do is put efforts on your own because no one else will do it for you. Don’t expect anything from professors, just go and demand. The institute is in a state from transformation from an IIT-like institute to an IIT. So, there are pros and cons (lies mostly with administration) but things are changing. Like, this year ISM is a part of COAP. Not only the entry fee has been reduced but this time the process will be more transparent.

Decide wisely! All the best!

Edit 1:

Aiming for better, ISM has a new director. He was professor of IIT K (ex-HOD), has 24 years of teaching experience, MS and PhD from one of the most world famous University UCB and a  Btech from IITK. He aims to implement all IIT standard rules here at ISM.

I am filling up application form for IIT kanpur. What do we need to select in preference?

Why are they asking for preference? It should matter for research .But for M.tech(TA) person it should be same. Most of you have filled this up.Does this preference has any role to play?I think  they will take one common test?Or will there be test based on preference? Please help. The student who will be selected based upon test will have same course structure?

Hie all,

The interview dates of IIT-K and IISC CDS are clashing both have seem to kept it on 14th may. I am thinking to shoot a mail to IISC as they are more flexible with there schedule. I can attach all the other people who are willing to give both interviews in cc. Kindly comment your mail-id.

Hi Guys,

First of all congratulation and best wishes to all of you for your respective achievements. After discussion with different guys and analyzing few things mentioning answer of some  FAQ -->

Q.->  should I join PSU or M.Tech ?

Ans. -> If you want  job security, work life balance(It may not be there in organization like ISRO for few years), can remain happy with less pay and monotonic work OR you are facing some kind of problem OR need some small break (because GATE score card remain valid for few Years) OR want to explore something different (like you want explore your hobbies which needs good amount of time for example you want to prepare for UPSC CSE) OR want to prepare for much better university like MIT, Stanford etc then PSU could be joined.

Now even after doing M.tech also you may join some decent private/government organization job (in private sector pay will be high but sometimes work life balance may not be there) OR go for p.hd OR if you want less work decent pay and work life balance kind of job and want to live near to your home town then you becomes eligible for assistant professor job in most of the government college.

Q.->  Which institution should i join. Which one is better ?

Ans. --> First decide very clear goal (means why do you want to do M.tech ?). Now check whatever do you want to learn or explore in 2 Year time. Once you are clear that you want to become expert in X or Y, then check professor in India who is expert in that subjects. Accordingly institution could be selected. For example you want to learn stuff related to compiler then you can check who is offering this subject in different institutions and do you like whatever course content is delivered by him/her (respective professor research work could also be checked).  Or create your own list of parameter based on your goal verify these parameter with respect to various institution.

Q.->  Which institution is good in terms of placements ?

Ans. --> All IIT and IISc are in general equivalent. But in IISc on campus recruitment for foreign countries is not allowed (Because IISc thinks you should deliver something back to your country). But in IISc if you want to get placed in some foreign country  then off campus could be tried. One more thing almost all the companies have their office in Bangalore. So if your professor/senior refers you on Day -1 then on Day - 2 you will be placed in respective company.

Q.->  I am very clear that i want to do M.tech. But i have time till July.  So should i learn something ?

Ans. ->  Relax and spend time with family and friends, prepare your self to take next gear. Now you can learn many useful things from Coursera, MIT OCW, NPTEL, edx, edureka,  etc. For example if you have decided that you want to learn stuff related to machine learning then you can learn various relevant things in that area from mentioned websites.

Develop good coding skills it will help you in placements in most of the companies and also it will help you completing various programming assignment quickly. If possible try to contribute in some simple open source software like Firefox, VLC etc.

Solve Cracking the coding Interview and review some most frequently asked problems in good product  companies( like Google, Microsoft etc).

You should have some basic knowledge of C, Java, Git, Bash, HTML etc.(ideally you should be capable of full stack development)

Q.-> I have good GATE score but i want to do my MS from top foreign universities  ?

Ans. -> Good. First you have to improve your profile. According to your interest you can join some lab as research assistant under some professor. In this job you can publish papers in A+ conference, learn subject in greater depth and parallelly you can prepare for exams like GRE etc.

It may be possible that whatever you like is not offered by Indian Institute or experts are not available in India in that  case you have work little harder to improve your profile.(You can also join some R and D company as intern who is working in the similar area if possible).

And if nothing works then till the time your GATE score card remains valid, admission in M.tech or  P.hd could be taken.

I hope provided information will help you in achieving something classic. It is our prime duty to help others because society has given us so much. If there is any mistake in provided information OR you need answer of any other query please notify.

PS: One additional advise it will be good if you can find some life partner in 4th sem.(not before. Do some data analysis till 3rd sem :)) whose frequency matches with yours because it is always good have someone who has some resonance with you and relationship failure chances will be less because you have investigated them till 3rd sem. :)

is iiit bangalore comparable to newer iits in terms of research, academics and faculty.

It's an earnest request if the admins can reply:

Is there any way u can bookmark a blog so that important blogs remain on the top? Besides, can we form separate groups for discussion on particular topics like Algo, Automata etc. for discussing the concepts rather than asking a particular question. I was wondering such groups will serve the purpose of group discussion on basic concepts. It's not always the questions we have doubt but  also fundamental and advanced concepts too.

Hey!!!

As per many requests, I am finally updating a post on IIT, Gandhinagar. I am Priyanka Gautam, a student at IITGN, M.TECH, CSE-2017

IIT Gandhinagar is a great college with a beautiful and well-organized campus. All the facilities available here is nice including the faculties, staff, Academics requirements, research opportunities and overall. As far as CSE branch is concerned it started last year, but the faculties and courses structure and all facilities provided here is up to the level. So, there is not much difference.

LAST-YEAR SCORE:- GEN - 600  and SC/ST - 400  OBC( not remember exactly)  but approx. around 500

Placement:- Overall placement is good, m.tech electrical avg. pkg is 13 Lakh around so we can hope best for CSE. Even here the most of b.tech guys placed good or many get admitted to the foreign university.

( In my opinion, placement does not matter much as long as you are getting good learning environment, so in the field of Computer science there is plenty of jobs as long as you are updated with industry and technology, you anyway get in)

ADMISSIONS:-

Admission is started you can apply online those who are in confusion, first you must apply after getting the college, you must decide which to take or which do not, as thinking to much waste lot of time and make you tense so be chill and apply if possible.

Admission Procedure:-

Written test followed by a coding test and Interview.

Last year, there was 20 question in written test with 1/4 negative marking on the wrong attempt. 5 question in coding with 2 internal choices you have to attempt 3. The interview is fine just brush up your basics of Gate ( focusing on ALGO, CO, OS, Data structures, TOC,).

All the best!!!!  All

Feel free to ask question !!!....

Interview Experience by Digvijay Pandey.

$Procedure:$

a. Programming Test
b. Written Test
c. Interview

a. $Programming\ Test:$
Attempt three out of five questions:
1. Return Array sum
2. Find the number of combination such that sum of row = sum of column (i don't remember question exactly but it was something like this)
3. Some tree related question (write just function)
4. ......

b. $Written\ Test:$
$20$ questions were there. All are objective type. Numerical related to page size, cache lines, regular languages, serial schedule, probability.

Algo question: An array is row-wise as well as column-wise sorted. You have to find an element. How much time will it take? (Options were there)

Did $2$ programs (All test cases cleared) and in the written test I got $20/20$ (They didn't disclose written marks but at the time of interview they asked me to solve written exam question. Because there was an ambiguous question (graph related) and I ticked it correctly and got the mark. Luck :P)

$1^{st}$ shortlisting based on Programming + Written test.

After this you have to fill area:
1. Theoretical Computer Science
2. Systems
3. Intelligent System
I marked $Theoretical\ Computer\ Science.$

c. $Interview:$

Question-related to the written test. Just single question.
A binary tree with $n$ node and height $h$ along with two arbitrary nodes are given. Find the maximum distance between these two nodes. $(2∗h)$
What is BFS?
Any other thing BFS do except traversal? (i.e. application of BFS. I said Finding shortest path if given graph is unweighted)
How? (Explained on board)
An array is given. Find the number of pairs with sum $=k$. Complexity?
If given array is already sorted. Then?
Difference between Merge and insertion sort?

People did $1$ programming question also selected for the interview. So try to score as much as possible in the written test.
Programming platform HackerRank.
Good Luck :)

If your $GATE\ Score > 720$ check these (1), (2), (3), (4), (5), (6)
If your $GATE\ Score > 650$ check  (1)
If your $GATE\ Score > 600\ and\ BTech\%> 80$ check these (1),(2), (3).

Is there any chance of BSNL JTO 2018? What about 2019 JTO?

Hello Everyone,I am here for some valuable advice of you guys...I'm a 2017 passout and i have been preparing for gate(left the job) but didn't score well this year(501 score)......i prepared hard for it still i messed up..i don't know what to do anymore ..please guide me..!
116

I am not very super genius guy. I belong to obc category.I didnt qualify jee main in 2 attempts.I passed out in b.tech from 3 rd tier college 2017 didn't have any job offers yet. In my college no body used to write gate exam so I didn't no about it as early as I have read in here in someone's post preparing from 3 rd year.

Every senior gives some advice to juniors but in my college My seniors used to play CS(counter strike) so I followed them and from 3 rd SEM to 7 SEM I played CS and passed B.E without backlogs bcoz I used to study 2 days before exam.

One of my friend who got 140 marks in jee main started preparing for gate 2017 and then suddenly he stops I asked why he said he has become lazy and won't qualify gate. So I thought when he can't do it will be impossible for me.

My university was not Indian and I didn't know about compiler design,TOC and Algorithms anything bcoz their syllabus didn't include that.I still have given Gate 2017 without preparation(Not qualified got just 10 marks).

Now GATE 2018 journey

Since my btech didn't have gate syllabus so I joined a gate coaching in august 2017 and started preparing for gate. And I also followed GO community for previous years solutions. And I just given test series of vani institute Bangalore. I used to get around 30 marks in test series.

Now in my Gate exam I panicked bcoz the topics I read I wasn't able to score there and got 23.67 marks in Gate 2018(AIR-14969).Due to panic situation I lost almost 7- 8 marks.

Mistakes Done By Me-

Should have prepared more deeply in concepts.I m just writing this bcoz if I have any regrets then it should not be for next year exam.I m motivated after reading post where people have 5k ranks now got 2digit rank.

At last thanks to GO community again for all support.

Any advice , comments which can help me write please don't ignore.Suggestions are invited.

Hello everyone. GATE-2018 results are out & so are the admission related queries :) I am also in that confusion zone now and need some help.

I got 644 GATE score (AIR-1121)

Category:GEN

B.Tech%=77.46

I am not really sure weather to look for research or placement in deciding the college. (May be both will work :) )

So, given all these constraints what are the best opportunities that I have?

P.S. I am not gonna repeat, that's sure :)
118
Thanks to Gateoverflow for helping me during my Gate2018 preparation
119
Hi everyone,

I am a final year btech student. I have gotten ~1300 rank in gate cse general merit. I am aware that I am not going to get any IITs but that was not my goal to be honest. I am really interested in machine learning, particularly deep learning. I have spent large amounts of time trying to grasp what it is (have watched numerous hours of videos) and also tried doing a few simple tasks like character recognition etc. But I have known for long that I need a lot more tools, particularly powerful computers, to further pursue my interest. I wrote gate having little clue about what it is about and how it can be useful (came to know about gate overflow after finishing the test). But perhaps now luckily I guess I may have a chance to pursue my interest? Or do I not? Which college and course would you recommend me to join to religiously pursue my interest and which is attainable given my rank and gm category?

Thank you in advance

I am unable to give preference among these universities. Are there any colleges worth applying amongst these? I have a score of around 600 in GATE. Please guide.
