This is a discussion blog for all the people appeared in set1.In my little knowledge of GATE for 2 years, this time i found that there was hell and heaven differences among two sets

well we can do nothing about it..except suffering..But in set 1 there was 2 question from Code optimization

1 from Matrix vector

1 from Gaussian probability , a total of 4 questions were OUT OF SYLLABUS

So i need a suggestion, should we mail IIT Roorkee to adress AT LEAST the Out of syllabus questions properly

what do you guys say?

Hello friends !! Good morning..I was disappointed by whatever happened on the day of exam..I felt that I should write a post regarding this highlighting the issues which I felt to be worth mentioning here .Here are few of those points :

a) Out of syllabus questions : If I remember well then there are 2 out of syllabus questions from Compiler Design(related to code optimisation and code generation which are removed in the 2016 official GATE syllabus itself..Secondly there was a question on something related to vectors in engg maths which is also not there in the syllabus..So these obviously hamper the confidence of a normal student..

b) Lengthy : Some of the 1 mark questions I felt were like 2 marks questions..I mean they are time taking..(This is my personal opinion)..

c) Complex terminologies : Like the one in "birthday attack" question..

In summary hardly 1-2 questions were there in set 1 which I feel is direct..

But contrary to this , set 2 contained many direct questions and easier questions..

According to my previous experience of 2016 and on sincere analysis I did not find this much difference as it is this year. The 2015 papers were also well framed and the sets of 2015 were also well balanced..

According to me , the "out of syllabus" questions in set 1 should be addressed at least by organising committee..

Can anyone tell the approximate date for official key release?

Hello,I have small confusion. When answer is submitted at the end of exam, there was a column 'Marked for review'.
I answered about 10 question and marked it for review.Eventually exam ended. Will the 'answered and marked for review' question will be counted?
Just confused as there was a separate column for the same.

Good Exam with moderate difficulty, your opinions?

Hello friends !! Good morning !!

First of all I would like to owe my gratitude to Gateoverflow for the knowledge and experience also to some extent that I have been gaining from it..Really many concepts are cleared and also in the solving process of various questions , I have also gained quite a good level of accuracy also..

As all of us know GATE 2017 is at our doorsteps : Just 1 week away it is from us..So this 1 week is very important for all of us from the exam point of view.

At this critical juncture we should not regret that we have not learnt a particular concept..Few will be there ; it remains with everyone including me..So not to worry too much for that..Instead revising what we have learnt properly is what matters..GATE is not about a specific question ; but throughput is what matters..What I mean is identification of question is important in exam and trying as many questions as possible hence..

So stay cool in this last week..So one should revise as much as one can and do not regret on the things which are not able to be covered..And keep your calm in the examination hall..Maintaining energy level in the exam throughout 3 hours is necessary..Read each question carefully and solve on its merit..When solving a particular question entire focus and energy should be dedicated to that question only..No other question should hover in mind..

In the end , my heartiest well wishes to all the interested GATE aspirants..Just stay focussed this last week and give ur best..Although myself is also an aspirant like you all..And hence I need best wishes from you all..

Best of luck to you all once again for GATE 2017..Let us give our best as much as possible..And remember the quote :

Even the word   "impossible"   says  " I m possible "..

Thank you all.

I'm a guy from fiinal year Computer Engineering from a private college.

When I joined Engineering I'm very curious about everything about Computing!

I entered in college with dreams of innovating something different in this tech-world. From very first day of Engineering some of my collagues talking about their future like GRE,CAT,GMAT,etc and I don't have any clue about that, then in next year I got to know about GATE from my senior friend in Civil Engineeing!

In my college no one is aware or I can say no one even know about GATE. And I heared from one of my friends that,

"Bro! agar tu GATE sirf crack bhi karega na to bhi tera 3-4 ka package to pakka hi hai!"

and I started R&D about GATE from internet sources like Quora and others.

One day I asked my friend who is topper of class, in fact topper of college.(around 9 CGPA till the date) that "Bro! are you appering for GATE?" then he replied "Bhaiyya! GATE bahot faadu exam hoti hai, from our college no one can able to make it large till the date! and that's the day I decied, Agar ye topper nahi kar sakta to mein kar ke dikhaunga! and I accepted the challenge of GATE.

In the end of 2nd year I joined GATEforum. (Which is more or less not worthy as far as CSE branch is concerned) with only motto of just cracking the GATE,Just 25 marks that's it!..

And day by day I was getting clear about subjects, topics and questions and to do this I got tremendous help from entire community family of Gateoverflow, Techtud, Ravindra Sir(Youtube only), Knowledge Gate(Sanchit Sir) and many many more people!

Day by day I procastinated big and big dreams of getting AIR-1,12,25,50,100,1000,blah,blah,blah! but now I didn't worry about my results because this journey of getting close and making one-to-many relationship with asymptotic notations, regular language and transaction management was awesome!

Today, I am getting around 40-50 marks in tests but I'm not worry about it because I know that I didn't give my 100% (not even 70%, because I'm too lazy and movie freak!!) for GATE! And I also know that

"Agar 2017 mein nahi to 2018 mein to fod hi dunga!"

So, in the last  best of luck to everyone-who are mad for GATE and these lines from my collection of poetries dedicated to this "Journey of GATE-2017!"

P.S. I know this is very long, but I am just overhelmed with my emmotions right now!

Yes ! As the title suggests, i am just going to share with you some lines, that made me tremendously motivational ,1 years back...

.in 2016, 20 days before the exam,i was going through a Family Problem and could not even touch books for some days!! then oneday, while browsing Youtube and some Random songs!! i found a song, the lyrics of Which changed my Approach completely.. then and there..So i thought , to share it with you, if anyone having a tough time , about anything.

Nakamio ke bahane hazaro hai, kiska kasoor kare

par zimmadari hamari v banti hai, itna zarror kare

Jo ho raha hai woh akhon ke age hai,Najre kyun pherle hum

Ab naye irado se manzar badalne ka,sar pe surror rahe...

This 4 lines is the best 4 lines of any song,i ever heard!!!

I had a score of 733 and rank 506 in CSE.

You can apply to following courses:

1.Mtech at IIT Kanpur:2016 cutoff for round 2 was about 728 score .After that you need to clear written test, programming test and /or interviews.

2.Mtech Research (CSA) at IISC Bangalore: Cutoff was about 650 rank in 2016.After that there is a written test and interview.

3.MTech Research at IIT Bombay :2016 Cutoff was approx 650 rank. There will be written test, programming test and later interviews, interviews will be technology /project specific eg linux/java depending upon requirements each year.

4.MS at IIT Kanpur :For summers cutoff was 750 gate score whereas for winter admissions it was much lesser (<730 gate score), there will be tests and interviews.

5.MS at IIT Madras :There criteria in 2016 was 70%in B. Tech and decent gate score. People under 1200 rank have fair chances. There will be a written test and interview. for More details regarding ms at IITM can be found here:http://wp.me/p7HCaA-5

6.MTech at IIT Roorkee:Recently IITR converted half of their seats to self financed. Fee will be about 1 lakh per sem and you will not be given stipends. Since this is a costly option, I have kept it at last.

In short, you have plenty of opportunities, just make sure you are prepared to grab them since at this rank direct admission at IIT’s is rare.

  1. Take care for your health.

Eyes redness , back pain, head ache are common problems among youngsters now a days. So Just get rid of these things, and Stay HEALTHY.

  2. Focus on what you want

Many times while studying, you get distracted easily. Keep yourself focused on the task. SO before doing anything Just ask yourself that Is it going to be beneficial for my GATE preparation.

  3. Self motivation

Have you watched “Undisputed” ? I like the character “Yuri boyaka”. And here is the Dilogue - “I'm the most complete fighter in the world.” Imagine that Its the war situation and I'm going to win this War.

  4. Schedule your day DAILY

Its more like Unit testing.. We are remaining with seven and half months. And Each Day counts. Have an attitude- “I'm going to make it. Whatever comes in the Way.”

  5. Get help from people in your study network, Join study Group.

One of my friend was preparing for an exam. He was totally underground.. But the result was Average performance. First thing- Don't Isolate yourself. Stay away from Evil and Stick to what is good.

We have a great community here at gateoverflow. Great minds ready to help for finding solutions to problem. Don't feel shy.

  6. Reward yourself for success.

  7. Don't neglect standard text books and What other material you have.

  8. Practice, Practice, Practice.

To this I prefer to take a subject and solve questions serially on gateoverflow.

Masters is not very different from Bachelors but in India most students do Masters from IITs and there is a big gap to be filled from lower level college environment. Though GATE preparation is mostly enough a few extra stuffs might come handy during IIT life.

  1. Get used to unix commands: I first started using linux only in second year of Masters and though I have used it ever since I still think 2 years early start would have helped me a lot. Somethings to try-
Install linux (ubuntu or mint or any other) either as dual boot (preferred) or as VM. If you have a credit card you can even get Amazon AWS free for 1 year (it is good).
Try running a process in background.
Try ssh to/from another machine and run a process in background (cronjob, nohup etc. might be needed here).
  2. B.Tech. level C/C++ skills is enough. But depending on how you did B.Tech. you might need to hone it. Try implementing graph traversals, AVL tree etc. in C and even try using STL in C++ for doing so.
  3. Java might not be required for B.Tech, but if needed no one is going to send you for a Java coaching. It is actually a subset of C++ (Java is made to make C++ easier), and anyone coding in C++ must be able to use Java. Try some String algorithms in Java. Another use of Java is for programming interviews- it is much simpler (and faster) to use Java to write a code than with C/C++ and even in Google programming interview Java is preferred.
  4. $\LaTeX$ is a publishing tool which all CS students should have used. In IITs, it might be used for assignments, report submissions etc. So, try making your resume in Latex, convert your B.Tech. report to latex one etc. If you have used Mathjax on website (as in gateoverflow), it would be pretty simple.
  5. Plotting is a needed research tool. There are many shortcoming with using Excel and trying to use gnuplot might come handy during Masters.
  6. Data analysis is another demanding task- and trying some basic R commands- like finding mean, SD etc. is recommended. Trying Python might also be handy.
  7. awk - is fun to use. Use it especially if you want to process a text file line by line.
  8. Whatever you do an editor is important. Knowing commands of a smart editor like vim, emacs etc. can make your work more fun and easier. Using IDEs like Geany, Eclipse etc. are also highly useful as they will reduce many jobs in future.
  9. Being familiar with area specific tools- like installing LLVM if you are interested in Compilers, R language if you are interested in data analytic, making shared libraries if interested on system side, mastering regular expressions if working on text processing and similarly for other areas.
  10. If you are interested in system side, be familiar with gdb
  11. Any project would require versioning and being familiar with git is an added advantage.
  12. For placements, aptitude- some companies ask CAT level questions - is required. Also, for big software companies, dynamic programming is important. Do practice some questions like sudoku solving using backtracking also. These questions can also help.
  13. In most places, you will have time for deciding the area of work. Still, if you can find a suitable prof to work under early, it is a good thing. Otherwise also, you can do this in first year.
