The person responsible for making France one of the great nations in the world was none other than Napoleon Bonaparte. When Napoleon was a small child, his mother sent him to a school in another town, though the family was not very rich. Napoleon had to study in a small place. The room in which he stayed was not in a good locality. The neighbourhood was full of quarrelsome, teasing, mischievous people who tried to let him down and make fun of him. When he sat for studies, a lady would trouble him calling him a bookworm and that he would die in the room with his head in the books one day.

Napoleon's mother used to write him a letter every week. Once, she wrote– 'Son, time is waiting for you to emerge as some useful personality. So, take advantage of the time and grab every opportunity of the student life. This is a formative period. If you miss the opportunity, you will have to cry for your whole life because then nothing would be left. That is why make right use of every minute you have at your disposal.'

Napoleon used to read the letters and get fresh inspiration from them. He, thus ignored the people who made fun of him and concentrated totally on his studies. One day, some students along with that lady stood in front of his small room and made a lot of fun of him. They taunted him saying that he is a termite… He does not know anything except licking books…  He is a useless fellow who does not go out, does not attend any party or dinner… who does not know anything about the world...

Napoleon listened to all those remarks quietly. Meanwhile, he received a letter from his mother. His mother had written– 'Son, your father died when you were a very small child. At that time, I was the only one to pray for you and to see dreams for you to be realised. If you forget your books and goals, what will happen to those dreams? You would be forced to bow in front of the world all through your life. On the other hand, if you would become someone worthwhile, the world would salute you and take your name with honour. Therefore, you should not let your valuable time go in vain.' And, while concluding her letter, she wrote to him that he was born in France; and, since his father was no more, so France itself was his father. Therefore, he should make every effort and bring glory to his great nation.

Napoleon, during his student life, took healthy food and did regular exercise. And, it is a tested formula that healthy food, right exercise, and a cheerful disposition keep the body and mind healthy and alert. Napoleon studied well. He topped in every class. After completing his studies, he became the supreme commander of the French Army and took France to the pinnacle of glory.

One day, while riding on a horse along with his soldiers, Napoleon went to the locality where he used to study in a small room. The French police surrounded him for security purposes. People from the neighbourhood crowded around him. Napoleon was sitting on the horse. Meanwhile, the lady who used to make fun of him came there. Her name was Helena. She was old by now. Napoleon asked her about the boy who studied in that small room. She told Napoleon that he was a bookworm and must have died somewhere. Who will know of him now? He was only seen when he went for jogging and exercise. Otherwise, he kept sitting day and night inside the room and never lifted his head from his books. He may not have perhaps raised his head to even see the world.

Napoleon smiled and told the woman that the same boy was sitting on the horse in front of her as the supreme commander of the French Army. His achievement was the result of one-pointed concentration on his goal and his determination to attain it! If he had bothered about the world, then, he would not be known to the world as one of the greatest military leaders who revolutionised the military organisation and training in France.

I Had only studied for 2 months for GATE 2018 and scored 517. When I checked IITB Cutoff For SC category, I found out that It was 500. So I satisfy their Cut Off for admission process. But does it mean I'll get a seat for Mtech ? an interview at least ? ... I know it is not a very good score, and I have already decided to study for GATE 2019. But still... I was wondering if it is possible for me to get admission this year... Also, Can anyone please explain what exactly the difference is between merely satisfying requirements and getting admission

PS: Any small detail will help, So, Please comment as soon as possible as I don't know whether I should fill the admission form or not ! ... and deadline is 11 - April - 2018

Greetings y’ all!

Almost everyone may have applied to various IITs by now and as we all (i hope) know that IITs will make their admission offers to the students through the COAP. I’m of the students who have applied to various IITs and is waiting for this whole procedure to start.

Now the thing is I’m quite paranoid when it comes to such events and I like to be prepared. So I would really request seniors, who have been through this procedure before, to give us some bits of advice(s) on how to approach the offers made on the portal.

I would also request the applicants to post their queries in the comments so that they can be answered. It will be really helpful to all.

Thanks!

Hey all,

Please suggest me the order in which I should give preference among following options in IIITH Application Form:

M.Tech in Computer Science (obviously choice 1)

For choice no. 2, there are 2 options: M.Tech in Computer Science-Information Technology OR MS (Research) in Computer Science

I am confused between the last two. Which should i give higher preference?

Also, if I don't mention any undergrad projects in my form, will it affect my chances of getting selected? I don't have a good B.Tech project as I am from not-so-good college and my profressors just told me to have any project just for formality and passing. Please guide me. :(

Can we have a daily quiz of 5 or 10 questions?

What I see is there are several questions still unanswered. Can admins arrange such a quiz so that these questions can be covered in the quiz ?

This will keep us in touch with the problem practice. It will also help us to solve those unanswered questions. If imp questions are kept in the quiz, then we can discuss those questions and after 4 months we would have covered more than 1200 questions.

@Arjun Sir please see if it is possible.

Hi all,

My GATE 2018 rank is 1967 and score is 584 general category. I am B.Tech 2017 passout from CS branch and have already dropped one year for GATE preparation. Currently, I have no job offers. My dream is to pursue research in machine learning and further my career in this field from abroad. I think I might get Theoretical Computer Science in IIT, Guwahati as 2016 cutoff was 563 for this. Is mtech in machine learning and computing from IIST(Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology) good? Kindly guide me as I am feeling really confused. Please suggest some good colleges and how to pursue my field of interest. Thank you.

P.S.: I have also applied for BARC, ISRO, ISI Kolkata.

Given syllabus: https://www.iiit.ac.in/admissions/postgraduate/monsoon/syllabus/#pgga

There is no topic mentioned of TOC & Compiler. But I read somewhere that they do give out of syllabus questions. Does anyone who have given PGEE before remember if there were any questions on TOC & Compiler?

A long post. Please bear with me.
Day after tomorrow is GATE and I just wanted to say a few things before the exam.
Firstly, I thank all of you, the members, in FB group as well as the GO website.
Anyone who asks a question, answers it or leaves a comment deserves to be appreciated. You guys are amazing.
The answers provided on GO website are simply the best and a person can gain a great deal of knowledge merely by reading the discussion below it.
Secondly, I thank all the mentors for their dedication towards this group. You are our heroes.
Lastly, I would just like to add a piece of advice for all those who are discouraged right now, who have been working really hard for the past couple months or year, but haven't seen any results, scoring much below 50s.
Trust me, I have an idea of what you're feeling. I'd just like to say one thing -
PLEASE don't carry this score with you in the examinaion hall. Don't go there with your mind made up that the exam will suck and so will you. And "I know I haven't performed well in any of these tests, No chance I'm gonna do good today, it's impossible, I don't deserve to score good anyhow."Please just don't. GATE question paper is different from any test you have given so far and so is your mindset while you're attempting it. Don't judge right now how you are going to do tomorrow. Don't decide your fate beforehand.
Try not to be negative while attempting exam. It's difficult to be positive, I know. Just try not to think about anything at that moment except the question in front of you because frankly, nothing can help you at that point of time. And don't get stuck at any question feeling, "I am good at aptitude, I must be able to solve all these ten question or I'm great at algo, why am I unable to solve this? or I wish I shouldn't have ignored this topic or I wish I had studied this in more depth or I wish I had put in just a little more effort, it could have made a great change" and a hundred more of these. Please avoid this mindset.
Remember, it doesn't matter whether you're getting marks from technical section or aptitude section, your strongest or your weakest subject, as long as you score.
And please don't make unnecessary attempts, they seldom work out. Don't look at the red dots(unattempted) on the side panel,
I know they are the hardest to avoid but try your best to do so. (I personally feel they are utter garbage :P)
Instead, focus on reading and attempting questions correctly. You don't need to attempt a lot of questions to score well if you attempt correctly.
I do not promise any miracle, I'm just giving an advice that I think could have helped a lot like me last year.
Don't take this exam too seriously and all the best.

@Arjun sir ,@Bikram sir, Other Veterans

Please guide me on how to approach such questions which need calculation of each times seperately and then finding a conclusion.

for eg.

  1. https://gateoverflow.in/8492/gate2015-3-34
  2. https://gateoverflow.in/1992/gate2014-2-33

While writing test I fear wasting time to find results for all, and I believe there can be a option-elimination like approach to do this??
