Indian Institute of Technology Delhi

M. Tech. Program

Program

The M. Tech. programme in Computer Science and Engineering (code: MCS) is a Masters programme offered to students who are interested in advanced learning and research in any area of computer science.

Applicants to this programme are expected to already have an excellent background in computer science. (It is not a skills conversion programme).

The programme is a 60-credit degree programme, which is usually spread over 4 semesters for a full-time student. About two-thirds of the credits involve coursework, and the remainder consists of project work. The emphasis is on conducting original research and writing a thesis (individually) that reports these results. The programme is flexible enough to allow a student to specialize in any topic of interest by taking elective courses and working on a research project in that area.

Placements have been excellent (100%), and our graduates have been employed at the top research laboratories and companies in the country and even abroad.

Students are provided top quality laboratory and infrastructure facilities. We endeavour to provide financial support at Master's level stipends to all GATE-qualified full-time students. Full-time students not resident in Delhi are given priority in allotment of hostel accommodation.

Specializations

In addition to the general M.Tech degree, we also offer MTech degrees with specialization in any one of the following areas:

  • Computer Graphics, Vision and Multimedia
  • Computer Networks and Distributed Systems
  • Algorithms and Complexity
  • Formal Methods in Software
  • Embedded Systems and Architecture
  • Software Systems

The requirement for the specialization degreeis that the student must complete at least 30 credits in the area of specialization at the 700-level or higher, subject to the following constraints:

  1. Major Project parts 1 and 2 (adding up to 18 credits) are in that area. (The supervisor certifies that the project is in the area of specialization.)
  2. The remaining 12 credits are from the basket of courses identified for that area, with at least 3 credits at the 800 level. (In the case of Independent Study and some of the Special Topics courses, the supervisor/instructor indicates which specialization area.)
  3. Not more than 4 core credits apart from Major project (i.e., from Minor Project or CSL 758 Advanced Algorithms or CSL 718 Architecture of High Performance Systems) can be counted towards the 30 credits.

Switching programmes

It is also possible to switch your programme of study mid-way. Interested students who have demonstrated excellence in their academic performance and research potential have the opportunity to convert to the Ph. D. programme or to the MS (Research) programme.

M. Tech. in CSE with Advanced Standing

Students at IIT Delhi pursuing a B. Tech. programme in any discipline have the option of obtaining an M. Tech. in Computer Science (Programme code: MCS) by investing an additional 2-3 semesters after the end of their B. Tech. programme.

For more details, click here.

Admissions

Eligibility: The candidate must have a 4-year B.Tech./B.E. degree or a MSc./MCA degree in computer-science or information technology, and have an excellent academic record. The candidate should have demonstrated adequate bacground in computer science itself (GATE in CS/IT), or else with extensive experience in computing (for part-time students).

There are two different ways in which you can register for the M. Tech. programme in CSE at IITD:
Full-Time : The candidate resides on the IIT campus for the entire duration of the programme. The student should have an excellent valid GATE score in CS/IT.
Part-Time : The candidate should be working in an industry or organisation involved in computer science research/teaching and located within 50 kms of NCR. The organization should certify that it has No Objection to the candidate pursuing this degree.

Admission Procedure

Download the application form from the IIT Delhi web-siteor collect a paper application form from IIT Delhi, PGS&R Section. Fill the form and attach a draft for Rs 300 made payable to the "Registrar, IIT Delhi" at New Delhi. The forms are typically available around the beginning of March.

You may wish to also attach a curriculum vitae listing your academic record, Industrial/Research Experience, Research Publications (also include a copy of your best publication), academic honors and awards etc.

Send the application to the "Deputy Registrar, Post Graduate Section. IIT, Hauz Khas, New Delhi 110016". Interviews for admission are conducted once a year in May, and admissions are synchronized with the semester beginning late July.

After looking at your application we will decide whether to invite you for an interview. You will be informed of the decision by email. The interview will test your familiarity with basic concepts in Computer Science and your ability to analyze and formulate a solution to a problem. Part-time students may be given a written-test prior to the interview.

MS Program

Program

The MS (Research) programme is a special research-oriented Masters programme offered to students who are interested in exploring in-depth research problems in any area of computer science. The emphasis is on conducting original research and writing a thesis of publishable quality. Interested students who have demonstrated excellence in their academic performance and research potential may convert to the Ph. D. programme. There are currently a handful of students in this programme.

Applicants to this programme are expected to have excellent backgrounds in computer science. Since the programme is a research programme, the candidates are typically expected to be superior in training and academic performance to students admitted to the M. Tech. programme. The main differences with the M. Tech. programme are:

  1. The MS (R) programme has 40 credits of research to 20 credits of course work versus a 20-40 breakup in the M. Tech programme.
  2. There are no fixed core courses. Instead each individual student is advised on courses to take based on their research interests and background.
  3. Full-time students are expected to identify their thesis advisor by the end of their first semester, and begin research in the second semester.

Students are provided laboratory and infrastructure facilities similar to that of Ph.D. scholars. We endeavour to provide financial support at Master's level stipends to all GATE-qualified full-time students. Full-time students not resident in Delhi are given priority in allotment of hostel accommodation.

While the MS(Research) programme is currently small in numbers, faculty tend to consider it more prestigious than the M. Tech. programme. Candidates are encouraged to consider conversion to Ph.D.

Topic was permutations and combinations. Some of the students said sir we already know this topic and we have studied it in 11th standard. So why waste time on it?

Sir smiled and said — I know.

Then he asked a question — “how many arrangements are possible for the word ‘bombay’”? And I think everyone must have solved this question. Then later on in the same class moving forward to a much more complex topic (identical ball in the box problem, circular permutations etc) we were so much concentrated on finding solution of these tough questions that our sir didn’t even took pen and answered all the complex questions in a tenth of a second.

He must have solved it in his mind, one may think. But how fast? Did he already knew what he was going to teach that day and so must have memorized all the answers, but then why would’ve he had said that now you make the questions using your imagination and I will answer them at the same speed. And he did that again. Then, at last when he answered how he was so fast in calculating those answers he said

I don’t know.

I know how to calculate the arrangements of the word Bombay and so I applied the same logic in every complex topic. He said he never crammed any formula (we used to cram formulas for these complex problems).

Not only for this subject, he did the same thing with every subject. Few years later, today when I was reading a quote by Mark Twain on the internet that — if you tell the truth, you don’t need to remember anything took me back to those days. It is we who make the problem complex ourself (in life too) and then feel bad for not able to solve. I can say this with my whole confidence that whatever subject he taught us I never tried to cram anything. I only uncovered what was covered at first, the whole truth. I religiously followed my teacher. I worked hard for a year but still after giving GATE (2020) examination (AIR 1248) only IIT Indore and IIITB were ready to send me an admission letter. This was a failure for me because I was studying to get into IIT Bombay. Clearly I rejected IIT Indore and IIITB.

Few days later when giving interviews to get a job, one of the interviewers said that you must be regretting now that you have wasted 1 year in preparation. I gently replied, Sir I have no regrets and I do agree that I failed. I accept that I am a failure. I still call myself a failure sometimes cause of failing a lot so often. But I have no regrets.

I am actually happy that I failed because after preparing so hard for that one year I realized that the destination was not the end goal rather it was the journey which we overlook often. In that 1 year I learnt how to deal with fear, anxiety, depression, family pressure, financial issues when all of them attack at the same time and on top of that you get diagnosed with MDD (major depressive disorder). If you don’t know about MDD it’s good. Physical pain is nothing when compared to the mental agony. MDD is a mental illness. On one side were these demons and on the other side was me alone. I was in tears during that time. I have no count of how much I would’ve cried during those days.

Here, one might ask — “why crying over a trivial exam?” A single piece of paper wouldn’t decide your future. Yes it’s true. But the journey which will lead you to the exam will decide what kind of person you will become. Remember the journey matters not any piece of paper ofcourse, if you continue to prepare till the end.

My frustration increased tremendously everyday to beat the topper in our coaching center (he got AIR 13 that year btw). It went on the whole year. I was determined that I will beat this guy. Me failing in GATE was the symbolic death of me against those demons which every aspirant must face in their journey. But as written in Shrimad Bhagavad Gita that those who die in war go to heaven too. I am proud that facing all those demons I accepted death instead of leaving the battleground.

So what if one may die because it’s the journey which leads to the destination is considered more important than the destination itself.

I learnt a lot in that one year of preparation for GATE. To date I am proud that I get to be taught by someone whom every part of personality I admire. Now sometimes I teach the same things to other needy students which I learnt from my teacher.

This was my story. If an average student from tier-3 college suffering with MDD can get 1248 rank in GATE then why can’t you get AIR 1. Always aim the highest. On then one end I was fighting with fear, anxiety, family issues, suicidal thoughts because of MDD and on the other end somewhere deep I knew that I will beat that AIR 13 student in this year’s exam. I always aim high. Aiming lower is a sin. Never do that. Aim so high that you aren’t even hesitant to die for your aim. It’s not like people who get AIR 1,2,3 doesn’t feel pain, stress. Even the strongest of the strong feel fear.

Karna was feeling fear too in the final battle v/s Arjuna, as said by his charioteer.

When our sir said “how many arrangements are possible of the word ‘bombay’?” he must’ve unconsciously said to every student sitting there that their target is IIT Bombay. That’s what I think.

So that one year of preparation has made me a very strong person from inside. Whenever I aim, I aim for highest. Aiming low is a sin. Don’t be a sinner.

Current situation: I am working in a startup and earns enough that the thoughts to go in FAANG doesn’t enter in my mind. I teach some students too. I am still suffering from MDD and I take medications for it. I lift weights and it’s been 3 years doing that.

Hello everyone,

I’m Anmol Vashishtha, one of the shortlisted candidates for BARC-OCES 2022.

I cleared the written test with a score of 136.35, the cutoff this year was 134.36. This year 99 candidates were shortlisted for interview out of which 5 have been shortlisted. I appeared for interview on 20th June at BARC, Mumbai.

Interview:

The interview panel consisted of 6 members.

After being seated, I was asked a little about my college and my final semester exam/presentation(as I am in final semester). Then, one of the members asked me “Have you prepared all the subjects from GATE syllabus only?”. I replied “yes sir”.

He then proceeded “But why GATE only? when you have been taught other subjects in college?”.

I replied: “Sir, because I’ve given GATE exam recently and it was also my second attempt, so these are the subjects that I have been thoroughly studying for two years”

He seemed to be satisfied by my response. He then asked me to stand up and write the 5 subjects I had prepared on the corner of the black board. I wrote OS, TOC, CN, DBMS, C.

A panel member asked: “Why have you not written DS and Algo?”

I replied sir:” Sir, I’m more interested in theoretical subjects, and DS and Algo don’t interest me much”, even they were surprised

The member continued: “ but you know right, that these subjects are a very integral part of Computer Science”

I replied : “yes sir I very much understand. I have a strong foundations of these subjects as I have prepared for GATE but when I go the interview call, I took that as an opportunity to dive deeper into these( the ones written on the board), so I have prepared for these only.”

The panel somewhat went along with it. And my interview starts from here.

OS:

OS panel member: “what are the functionalities of OS?”

Me: told about process management, resource allocation, memory management, I/O devices

OS panel member: “so you’ve told process management, what do you mean by a process?”

Me: told the standard definition i.e. “process is a program under execution”

OS panel member: "when do we call something a process? I mean like we have programs right, when does a program turn into a process?”

Me: elaborated the process of loading a program into main memory from the secondary memory and then tried to explain that these programs become processes when they are allocated main memory resources.

OS panel member: “while explaining you mentioned the word interrupt, what do you mean by an interrupt?”

From this point on the entire OS section shifted towards interrupts, so this discussion consisted more of concepts of Interrupts as covered in Computer Architecture rather than OS but luckily interrupts was a topic that I had put a little extra effort while preparing for GATE . I’ll summarize the series of cross questioning.

  • what is an interrupt
  • what happens when an interrupt occurs? I told about the mechanism and Interrupt Vector Table and Service Routines.
  • How do we know what to do when an interrupt has occurred? told about the vectored interrupt mechanism
  • How does the OS know that an interrupt has occurred? told about the control signal mechanism, the INTR lines etc
  • Why do we need interrupts in the first place? told about privileged instructions and kernel mode execution
  • Little cross questioning on kernel mode and why some instructions are declared as privileged
  • What’s the difference between interrupts and exceptions?

At last the OS part was completed.

C:

Then they shifted to C. I faltered a little in this section but the panel members gave ample hints and time for me to identify my mistakes and to rectify them.

C panel member: “write a program that accepts an alphanumeric string and extract the number in it, for example if the string is ‘a2b3cd4’ your code should return the number 234”

Me: Before writing anything I preferred to verbally explain my thought process. “Sir we would iterate through the string and whenever we encounter a number we would extract it and store it as an intermediate result”. Then I started writing the code. Whenever I was stuck I used to quickly take a sample input and dry run my code, this helped me find all errors immediately.

C panel member: "how will you handle negative numbers?"

Me: told that we can add a check and then make the number negative after processing the string.

C panel member: "what can be the maximum size of a number that can be extracted by this code?"

Me: I wasn't able to provide a satisfactory answer, but I tried to answer in all ways I could.

TOC:

Then they shifted to TOC.

TOC panel member: "what are the uses of finite state automata?"

Me: described a little about FSA, then the only example that struck my mind was the LR(0) item set. How FSA is used to track what productions have been scanned. Eg -> S -> A.B, S-> AB.

TOC panel member: "you've mentioned parsing and grammars, where else is FSA used in compilers?"

Me: told about lexical analysis.

TOC panel member: "Can you design a FA for accepting integer declarations? For example int abc;"

Me: I wrote the Regular expression first and then proceeded to draw the FA, followed by a bit of cross questioning on FA and parsing in general.

After this they asked few questions from the remaining Subjects. I'll summarize them:

  • DBMS:
    • What all topics have you learnt? Told Transactions, Normalization, Indexing etc
    • How are transactions implement isolation? I told them about view and conflict serializability but the member was expecting the isolation levels. I said I cannot recall those at the moment.
    • Why do we need Normalization? Give examples
    • What are types of relation in DBMS? Told one to one , many to one etc
    • Give example of each
    • Kind of data structures are used in DBMS? Thought for a moment and told hash tables, B tree etc
    • Explain B trees and Hash tables?
    • How collisions are resolved ? What do you think is better for collision resolution in general? Thought for a bit and said that I would prefer linked list approach because in worst case if insertions are made to same slot again and again LL approach would not affect the rest of the hash table, while inserting into successive slots would affect the rest of hash table as well.
  • Data Structures:
    • As I had mentioned Linked List in DBMS topic so the DS panel member asked me about LL a bit.
    • Write declaration of LL
    •  How would you find the middle element? Told about the brute force solution to scan and count the number of nodes and traverse again till n/2 elements
    • Can you do it in single traversal? Told about the double pointer approach and moving one pointer twice as fast as other.
  • Computer Networks:
    • What is subnetting?
    • Why do we need subnetting? I felt that I couldn't provide a satisfactory answer to this, but again I tried to explain my best.
    • A little about subnet masks
    • You've explained subnetting, now explain Supernetting, why do we need supernetting? Again I felt that I couldn't provide a convincing answer but I explained that "contrary to subnetting, when an organization wishes to combine two or more networks to achieve a higher level of logical abstraction. I told them an example that for example an institution had an ML and Neural Network departments, so it can combine these n/w to form a supernet and logically designate it as Artificial Intelligence department".
  • Java:
    • DS panel member asked whether I was familiar with C++ and OOPs. I replied that I have learnt Java rather than C++.
    • DS panel member: tell me about OOP concepts?
    • DS panel member: tell me about Polymorphism, how is it achieved in Java? Told but I got confused in Method overloading and overriding. But I corrected my mistake after getting a hint.

Then the last question I was asked was from TOC again.

TOC panel member: "how can you implement DFAs in C?"

Me: told about the matrix approach

TOC panel member: "What if we don't know about the number of stated beforehand?"

Me: Thought for a bit but couldn't answer properly

Then my interview concluded, I greeted them and came out of the room. My interview went for about 1 hour and 23 minutes.

Preparation:

Written Test: Just revised my GATE notes ( I have attended Made Easy Online Coaching) and for practice I combined all the previous year Gate 1 marker questions in a single pdf. I used to solve all these and then evaluate my performance.

Interview: Reading through past interview experiences on GATE Overflow, Quora etc, I realized that revising notes wouldn't be enough. So I turned towards university lectures available on YouTube. I used to watch a lecture and then go through the corresponding topic from a standard textbook. This was naturally time consuming so I limited myself to important topics of each subject. I'll summarize the resources:

I wish all the future aspirants best of luck for all their endeavors.

If $user_A$ commented on a specific Answer/Question, then $user_A$ will notified via Email/Notification icon of all subsequent comments. It will be useful in most of the times but sometimes you may not willing to join in unnecessary discussions. Sadly, you can’t avoid that, On other hand $user_A$ can’t join in a discussion until $user_A$ commented on specific Answer/Question. These two features are implemented now in GO site in the form of Follow/Unfollow on every answer/question.
