In order to perform any instructions which are present inside any program like (ADD, SUB, MUL ,MOV etc), CPU need to find out where these operands exist, on which it has to apply operations . for eg: MOV R1,[2000] // MOVE the contents(Data) of location 2000 to register R1 Let me define term: Effective Address : It is the address where operands exist. For eg: 2000 is the effective Address in above instruction. Absolute mode and Relative modes are different addressing modes.(Addressing modes are nothing but they specify different ways to indicate where operands exist) Absolute mode(Direct mode): ADD R2 , [3000] // Add the contents of location 3000 to R2 register Direct mode , in the sense we have got direct address of operand (effective Address) in the given instruction. Relative addressing Mode : It is relative to PC (Program counter).
