Computer A has 30 MB to send on a network and transmits the data in burst at 6 Mbps. The maximum transmission rate across routers in the network is 4 Mbps. • For Host Computer: It will send the burst data onto the network (X) @6Mbps.
  • Time to send the burst data @6Mbps = $\begin{align*} \frac{{\bf 30*8} \text{ Mbits }}{{\bf 6} \text{ Mbps}} = 40 \text{ sec} \\ \end{align*}$
  • But the router on this X network has lower transfer capacity. In $40$ sec router will transfer less amount of data.
  • So, there must be some mechanism to hold the remaining data originated from the sender's computer such that no data loss occurs.
  • For router : If it transfer at its max rate i.e. $4$Mbps Then in $40$ sec it can transfer $\rightarrow$
  • $\begin{align*} 40 \text{ sec} * 4 \text{ Mbits/sec} = \text{ 160} \text{ Mbits} = \text{ 20} \text{ MB } \end{align*}$
  • Bucket must hold = $30 - 20 = 10$ Mbytes
