For auto storage class a variable's lifetime starts when the function in which it is the declared is invoked. When the function pops out of stack the life of the local variable ends.

For variable belonging to static storage class, it's life begins when the program flow encounters it's declaration and stays will the end of program termination. It does not get destroyed when the function within which it is declared pops off.
