Indian Institute of Technology Patna is one of the new IITs established by an Act of the Indian Parliament on August 06, 2008. IIT Patna has ten departments: These are Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Humanities & Social Science departments.
M.Tech:
M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering:
Educational qualification: B. Tech./B.E. degree in Computer Science/Information Technology and a valid GATE score in CS. Total number of seats available: 27 (Regular & Full time – 25 Sponsored – 02)
M.Tech in Artificial Intelligence:
Educational Qualification: B. Tech./B.E. degree in Computer Science/IT/ECE/Aerospace Engineering/Maths & Computing/ME/Civil Engineering or Equivalent (a valid GATE score in CS/IT, EC, ME, CE for TA/RA/Part-time) M. Sc. in Mathematics/Statistics/Mathematics & Computing (valid GATE score in MA or CS/IT, EC, ME, CE). Total number of seats available: 50 (Regular & Full time – 20 Sponsored – 30)
M.Tech in Mathematics and Computing:
This course is offered Jointly with Department of Computer Science & Engineering. Total number of seats available: 21 (Regular & Full time – 19 Sponsored – 02). Educational Qualification: M.Sc. in Mathematics/Statistics/Mathematics & Computing or Equivalent or B.Tech./B.E. degree in Computer Science/IT/ECE/ Aerospace Engineering/Maths & Computing or Equivalent and a valid GATE score in MA, CS, EC. Statistics to be considered as valid GATE paper.
Categories of Admission:
Regular (Full-time):
These are students who study in full-time for their M. Tech. degrees and receive assistantships from the Institute or fellowship from any other organization/ funding agency. Selection will be based on GATE score and through COAP. GATE score requirement is exempted for students with Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with minimum CPI of 8.0
Sponsored (Full-time):
A candidate in this category is sponsored by R&D organization, academic institution, governmental organization, or industry for doing M. Tech. in the Institute on a full-time basis. The applicant must be a regular employee of his/her organization with at least two years of experience. Sponsored – Full time student will not receive any financial assistance from the Institute. A valid GATE score is necessary for this category. Candidates may have to go through written test and /or interview that will be conducted by the institute.
Project Staff:
Student who is working on a sponsored project in the Institute and is admitted then to M. Tech Program to work on a full-time or part-time basis. Valid GATE score is mandatory to get admission under this category. Assistantship may be provided to students in project staff category as per the norms of the project funding agency. No assistantship will be provided from the Institute.
Part-Time:
A student in this category is a professionally employed person (including the staff of IIT Patna), who pursues the M. Tech Program, while continuing the duties of his/her service. The Institute does not provide any assistantship to such a student. Candidates may have to go through written test and/or interview that will be conducted by the institute.

Categories of Admission:
Regular and Full-time – Institute Fellow:
The candidate receives assistantship from the Institute.
Eligibility:
BE / B. Tech./ BS / M. Sc./ MA/ MBA/ MCA /equivalent degree with valid GATE score above the prescribed cut-off level / NET qualification. The requirement of GATE score is waived for candidates with Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from the Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) with CGPA > 8.0 and other IITs. Selection will be based on the interview for selection. (OR) ME/ M Tech/ M Phil /equivalent degree with GATE qualification not older than 05 years from the last date of submission of application / NET qualification.
Full time and Regular - Research Fellow - JRF/SRF
Applicants having external fellowship from recognized Government funding agencies are encouraged to apply. S/he receives fellowship from any government recognized funding agencies, such as CSIR, UGC, DBT, NBHM, DST (INSPIRE programme) and similar other schemes.
Project Staff:
This category refers to a student who, as a project staff, is working on a sponsored project (registered in R&D Unit, IIT Patna). The said project staff is eligible to be admitted in the PhD Program (of this Institute) to work on a full-time basis. The candidate must have qualified GATE not older than 05 years from the last date of submission of application / NET qualification. A project staff intending to join the PhD program of IIT Patna must produce NOC on the day of interview.
Full time – sponsored:
A candidate in this category is sponsored by a reputed industry, R&D organization, academic institution (universities/colleges), government organization, PSUs and autonomous bodies (central / state) for research and career advancement. IITP does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a candidate. Candidate in Sponsored category must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization (of repute) with a minimum of two-years job experience in the respective field. An intending sponsored candidate must produce NOC on the day of interview.
Employed & Part-Time:
A candidate in this category is a regularly employed person (including the staff of IIT Patna), who pursues the PhD program, while continuing the duties of her / his service. The Institute does not provide any assistantship / fellowship to such a student. Candidate in Employed and Part-time category must be a regular employee of her / his organization with at least two years of professional experience in the respective field. NOC must be produced on the day of interview.
Minimum Educational Qualification:
Candidates having M. Tech. / M.E. degree in an Engineering / Technology, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks. (OR) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in a relevant branch / area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks. (OR) Master’s degree in science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ ST applicants.

IIT Patna provides joint PhD program offered jointly by IIT Patna and Lincoln University College Malaysia.
Eligibility Criteria:
• 4 Years Undergraduate (B. Tech / B.E. /BS) with 60% or CPI 6.5 at Qualifying Degree.
• 2 Years Postgraduate (M. Tech. / M.E. / MS / M. Sc. / MCA / MBA) with 60% or CPI 6.5 at Qualifying Degree.
Mode of Instruction:
The PhD programs will be delivered in a hybrid mode, offering a blend of online and on-campus learning. This mode allows candidates to attend course work online while participating in campus examination and campus immersion programs at both IIT Patna and Lincoln University College Malaysia.
