IIT Kharagpur MS (Research) Admissions:
Most aspirants assume IIT Kharagpur follows the same direct application portal as IIT Madras or Bombay. However, KGP has a unique admission system where the journey often begins with a job rather than a student ID.
Step 1: Get Hired
To be eligible for an MS (by Research) at IIT KGP, you generally need to be working as a staff member on a sponsored research project within the institute.
Find a Project: Monitor the IIT KGP SRIC Portal for "Temporary Jobs."
Roles:
Selection: You apply for a specific project. Selection is usually based on an interview conducted by the Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-PI(s) of that project.
Step 2: The Transition to MS
Once you are employed and working on the project, you become eligible for "MS Internal" admissions, which happen every six months (Autumn and Spring semesters). You will effectively be balancing project deliverables with your research and coursework. The CGPA and other criteria is subject to the academic and department.
Step 3: The MS Entrance Process
Even if you are already working at KGP, you must clear the formal admission cycle:
Written Test: Usually covers 3-4 core subjects (like Engg. Maths, Discrete Maths, Digital Logic, Programming and Data-Structures). You can find the specific syllabus for CSE on the Department Website under the MS (by Research) tab.
Interview: If you clear the written cutoff, you move to the technical interview. For MS candidates, this typically happens the day after the written test.
IIT Kharagpur PhD Admissions:
For PhD admissions at IIT Kharagpur, the process is more flexible but equally rigorous, allowing you to apply either as a regular Institute Scholar (based on a high GATE score) or as a Project Staff member (JRF/SRF). Unlike the MS route, which almost strictly requires being a project employee first, PhD aspirants can apply directly through the official admission portal when the call for applications opens each semester. The selection follows a tiered structure: you are first shortlisted based on your GATE score or academic credentials, followed by a departmental written test and a technical interview, which often on the same day. If you are already working on a project at KGP, you can apply to convert your position into a PhD, similar to the MS process, but the evaluation remains centered on your research potential and core subject depth.
Recently I have heard that the PhD Admissions will now not wait for 6 months cycle but was unable to find proper source for it, will update it here if I find so.
